I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but one of the first things I thought when I saw Komala - a Koala in a Hawaii-themed region - is that it just has to be a Stitch reference. The Disney character has some popularity in Japan and it wouldn't surprise me at all if Komala was based off him. The movie is set in Hawaii. The Japanese anime adaption is set in a fictional Hawaiian style island off the coast of Japan. Komala's colours seem to fit, not to mention it has a coffee beverage named after it. The drink that sends Stitch hyper.

What does everyone else think? Deliberate easter egg? Or happy accident?

I never saw Komala like Stitch tbh.... I always see Sableye like a Stitch :o

I see virtually no resemblance between Komala and Stitch, but not to derail the subject, I do think Toucanon somewhat resembles the toucan mascot from Kellogg's Froot Loops.

    Toucan Sam! Yes!!

OT: I don't really see the Stitch/Komala resemblance. I guess because Stitch doesn't really look like a koala to me..?

I don't think so, but I can see why you would think so.

Otherwise, Komala would have to have some Transforming/Multitype abilities to be like Stitch.
