I'd say they incorporated some story-related ideas into it, but I would hesitate to call it outright canon.

Did Red get all those starters the same way you do in Pokemon Yellow? Or did he get them through trades, while catching the Pikachu and pushing him to the front of the party? Did Jesse and James exist, but leave Team Rocket upon them being disbanded? Or did they simply not exist in the first place? Even the Gym Leader's teams are no sure indicator since they wouldn't remain static within the three years between RGBY and GSC.

I'd say it's totally ambiguous at this point, and will remain so forever unless they decide to put Red in a future game, which I doubt. If Red was found at the end of HG/SS with his Pikachu trailing him like in Yellow version, I'd call it a dead giveaway. But they didn't, so the question still stands.

In any case, I contacted Nintendo and they told me Yellow isn't canon... And that it is. Pokemon is apparently a series "open to interpretation", and any one fan can believe any one thing.
Sorry, but I have to come back and quote this (never mind you still not getting what I meant in that other paragraph, so I won't bother explaining it).

Ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. You're quite the joker. Did you get a direct line to Game Freak's top team or the people who made Yellow or something? Or did you just e-mail the customer service? (Which are two very different things). After all, claiming something without any evidence about it is one thing, and to say you did something to the level of the former (not the latter as its a bit foolhardy accepting responses from that - everyone contacts them about stuff like that, and more so release dates, and the customer service tends to give generic responses and are not the people themselves making the games. After all Game Freak made it, not Nintendo) just like that is rather doubtful.

(Oh and I don't mind people who think it isn't canon whatsoever if they prove their point or can show their point of view clearly and don't argue in such a manner and ignore points made, and then go about calling people pretentious idiots, is all. People can see VMs, yo.) =)

I said I contacted Nintendo, not Game Freak. How exactly would you expect me to get into contact with Satoshi Tajiri himself? I did the best thing I could to get an official response, so you should be happy for that at least instead of expecting me to simply rely on unofficial opinions.

As anyone can clearly see by reading this little debate of yours, I've explained my points time and again. Your rebuttals are just as much speculation as mine, if not more. Don't pretend I've ignored anything. I've responded to everything you brought up in some way or another, yet you continue to say I'm ignoring you and "the facts", or I'm just plain wrong. Well, guess what... This is an opinion thread. I'm not wrong. I offered my opinion and gave a poll so people can offer their opinion as well. You and Shrike seem to think opinions need to be based on facts, which is ridiculous.

I had always thought that Yellow was made to capitalize on the popularity of the anime, and therefore belonged in the same storyline/continuity as the anime (which is different from that of the games and manga).

Since a separate company is behind the anime, that would mean that Yellow is not canon regardless of its having been made by Game Freak.

On a similar note, if Sonic Team made a game involving the Archie characters, would that make characters like Bark and Antoine canon?

Another few points that suggest Yellow is not in the main continuity is the fact that Melanie (the girl that gave you Bulbasaur) isn't present in GSC or HG/SS... Her house is replaced with the RGB house.

Also, the surfer with the Puka-analogue on the Fuschia beach is also gone.

The gym leaders' anime-based teams and appearances are not found in GSC or HG/SS.

And the Yellow Unknown Dungeon was not present in the FrLG remakes... It was based on the original design.

She was based off the anime Melanie, meaning she cared for sick and abandoned Pokemon. She would have little reason to move, and even if she did some reference to her existence might have been left behind... Instead the house is exactly like it was in RGB with the same people, suggesting the timeline continued from he RGB point.

Gary and Blue doesn't match in personality. Yellow is not 100% canon.

Ok, here's a question. What is "canon"? In the Pokemon universe, i don't really think the term can be applied. Considering in one generation (III), all three games contradict each other (in Ruby Team Magma wants to expand the land and Aqua simply wants to stop them, in Sapphire, the reverse is true, in Emerald, both have their own agendas.), i don't really think the term "canon" applies here. Atleast not for RBY and GSC, where the versions have real differences, other than wild Pokemon.

Well, here is my opinion.

IMO, Yellow version is 100% canon, more canon than R/B. The same with Crystal,Emerald and Platinum.

I believe that the 3rd game in each generation shows what "really happened" during that generation and the first 2 games just showed a "possible one-side" of the generation. ( I wouldn't call them a spin-off though).

The battle with Red in G/S/C seems to support this. Since when you battle him, he has all 3 starters along with Pikachu.

Unfortunately, I can't really find any evidence to prove the same with Emerald and Platinum. But that's pretty much what I believe.

It is a canon. It developed the following thing (HG/SS), the more individual icons (pretty much every game afterward), and the friendship system (everygame after it).

So yeah, its a canon in every sense of this particular meaning.

Good God. Don't bump threads over a month old. Check the date of the last post before you post.
