James Cameron's "Avatar"

Because we have such a shortage of overblown big budget movies XD

Well, my brother hoped it would happen was because he wanted to see Titanic's thirteen year long record broken, and it did.
By the way, Triforce, what would you consider as the best movie ever? For me, I don't know. I have several films that I simply love, one of them being Avatar naturally.
Remember that it is all by opinion.

lol I like that reason. Although again, in an inflation adjust ranking, it has not yet passed Titanic (which itself isn't number one).

I wasn't asking "Why would you want to succeed" in a kinda ... "it deserves to fail" manner. If it makes money, all power to it. Even if I didn't like. That's how things work. But even for movies I do like, and when they are successful, I don't feel any sense of hope that it makes bazillions of dollars. So, I couldn't really understand XD

I don't have a top favourite movie. Like you, I have a list. When I try to rank them I just go in alphabetical order or what comes to mind first lol But Avatar is not among them.

I have already asked this before, but no one has answered it yet. Who is your favorite actor or actress within the movie?
I think they all do their part equally well.

I saw it last Sunday.

I think that it's an amazing movie. The tree seeds in the 3D version really had an effect. It was funny and action filled. The animation was brilliant.

Thanks to them! : P

I just got back from seeing it today. I was just so epically amazing! :D I LOVED THAT MOVIE!

This thread is worthy of my first post in months-
THIS MOVIE WAS........... pretty goos actually :D
it made my top 3 (number 2 being Prince of Egypt and number 1 being Nightmare Before Christmas)- it was so good! who ever doesn't like it- you are entitled to your own opinion, but you must be smoking some heavy blow

It was quite good as movies go, but for whats supposed to be "one of the greatest movies ever made" its a bit of a disappointment.

It was visually spectacular thats for sure, the 2nd best 3d aniamtion I've ever seen (first being "A Christmas Carol" with Jim Carey). I have no problems with that.

The music was quite good but James Horner should be able to do better judging by his fantastic score for Apollo 13. In fact Klaus Badelt, Hans Zimmer or John Williams would have been better suited to write music for that kind of film. Anyway that's just my opinion.

The characters and casting were awful. Just awful. While I am happy that Joel Moore has finally got that big-name part he has deserved since his appearence in Dodgeball, I think the whole "Everyman" protagonist was a little too "Everyman". He seemed far too identifiable with, as if thats what he was designed to do. His character was not at all unique. If the same character could appear in a war movie or a romance or a bildungsroman crime-thriller indie film noir set in the georgian era. The character was totally predictable. He had almost no faults and the only fault he seemed to have was impulsion which is generally something we identify with ourselves. In 12 years James Cameron could have come up with a better protagonist, and a better actor to play him (methinks Brian Blessed deserves the title role in a Sci-Fi sooner or later :D). The colonel character antagonist was also far too stereotypical (The "Southern-Accented-Blow-Evereythin'-up-and-get-me-some-money" kind of character).

The concept was original and an excellent one at that. However, the plot seemed to just be a series of Pochontas cliches. He happens to meet the chief's daughter. They fall in love. She happens to be betrothed to the most warrior-like member of the tribe (who is bitter and serious), the hero learns not to think of the indigenous people as savages, there is a talking tree, the hero is severly injured at the end and so on and so forth. I expected at any minute for them to break out into "Can You Paint With All The Colours Of The Wind?". Also, with 12 years in making the film, James Cameron could have come up with a better name for the metal the humans were after than "Unobtainium". They may as well have called it "Awfullyhardtofindium" or "Geewecoulddowithsomeofthatium". This lack of a real plot made it that at about the bit where the home tree is destroyed, I became aware of how long I was in a cinema for.

OK, it was a good film. But it was just that, a good film. Not a sensational film or an amazing film. Visually spectacular though, very beautiful.

My Rating

So there you have it. If you want true film genius, go look at something directed by Stanley Kubrick.

lol I was thinking the same thing.

John Williams can elevate any film. He can make a bad film at least watchable.

I'll have to admit that it's true about the film's plot being similar to others such as Pocohantas.
But mark my words, familiar does not mean bad. In fact, my older brother says that while he was watching it, he never thought of anything like that.
I'm going to make a side note here, Avatar is now the very first film to reach the $2 billion point.

I just watched it again (this is the first time I have watched a movie twice in a theater) and it's still great.
Even though it's not an edge-of-your-seat kind of experience, I still like to sit back and enjoy the show.
Which actor or actress is your favorite within the film?
For me, they are all great in their own way.
I would really like to know your answers too.

By the way, The Cynic, my mom agrees of how the metal is called unobtainium; she thinks it's a funny name, and I partly think so too.

to quote the Nostalgia critic on my thoughts on this movie..."The visuals will be stunning but the story will be absolute bu*****t !"

Just got back from seeing it and I'm underwhelmed, to be honest. The effects were pretty impressive, I'll give it that, but for me, even the 3D didn't make much of a difference. In fact, there was one point where I lifted up my glasses to rub my eyes and I thought "Hmmm. Suddenly the characters just got a lot less blurry and Pandora just got a whole lot more colourful". In a sad way, I almost wish I'd watched it in 2D so that My view of a beautiful film hadn't been blocked by 3D lenses. The plot....well, it wasn't quite as bad as I had feared, but it wasn't exactly anything to be proud of. The acting was surprisingly decent. The action sequences were exciting. And, most importantly, it never felt like it was dragging.

My verdict? Enjoyable hokum. Watch it once, then leave it.

With a $300 million budget, if I rremember correctly, the CGI better have been good. Too bad it probably won't make that much of a profit because of that.

Two months later, and the box offices have proven you oh so wrong.

I saw it in December, and I loved it. Sure, the plot was unoriginal, but the effects were worth it.

It was an eyegasm, I'll give it that. But I'm with the crowd that was somewhat disappointed. Considering that this movie game from the same mind that produced Titanic, I'm very disappointed, actually. It was Pocahontas, but with furries spooning on screen.

But, meh. I'll take it for what it's worth. It had pretty visuals, at least.

Williams is over-rated. James Horner is a far more talented composer.

Went to see this last night so it's pretty fresh on my mind.
By far the best film I've ever seen in a cinema, just because of the athmosphere, the 3D really hightened the experiance however, it wasn't completely necessary, it still would have been a great film nonetheless. I really enjoyed it a lot. It was visually stunning and a film I had anticipated to see for a long long time, it's well worth the eleven euro I payed to see it. Again, the 3D wasn't a necessity by any means but it really brought you into the film that much more. In saying that, you lose about 30% of screen brightness while wearing those glasses, we're still about a decade from creating technology to combat that apparently, so I guess that's something you'd notice if you are a bit of a film fanatic as I am.
No matter how amazing I think the film is, I think as a story, it lacked in some places. I felt it was rushed at parts and not well explained. Now James Cameron both wrote and directed the film but I think the producers ran it in many ways as the story wasn't very strong in parts. Such as to why the main character got the position of being in an avatar's body, I think that could have been expanded upon. As well as the whole clash between the scientists and the army and their intentions. I dont see why they spoke, worked and lived in harmony when one party had the intention of doing what it would take to get what it needed while the other just wanted to observe the habitat, seems there was a greed sprung out from the army etc. kind of randomly during the film.
In any case, it was such a pleasure to the eyes and a specticle really. A lot are saying it's great but overrated, but I dont think so. I do think it could have done with an ironing out in places to smooth the edges a bit but it's definately this years must see if you love a great visual film. As far as it's genre is concerned it deserves a 9.5/10 however, as a main stream film competing with the rest, I think it's a little blurred by special effects and a lack of decent dialogue in places. Though even on a global scale it still deserves it's recognition and I'd give it a 9/10 overall outside of it's own genre.
