"Screw the rules, I design Pokemon"
    James Turner

If you're not aware who James Turner is, he's the first Westerner to design any Pokemon at all ever. He designed seven Pokemon in this game:

    *image removed* Vullaby
    *image removed* Mandibuzz
    *image removed* Golett
    *image removed* Golurk
    *image removed* Vanillite
    *image removed* Vanillish
    *image removed* Vanilluxe

Some of these are more controversial Pokemon, especially the Vanillite line, but others are widely loved. He also designed one Pokemon card but that's irrelevant to the thread since this is about this game.

Do you think that his breakthrough into an Easterner-dominated game company could lead to more people designing for Game Freak in the future from the west? Was this an inevitable development or is it groundbreaking, or both? Do you think that the style of Westerners has influenced this game more due to James working there, or no?

    DISCUSS!

I like many of the Pokémon in Unova and ironically, five of those seven Pokémon are my new favoruites so kudos James Turner!

So he's the one that created the crappy Pokémon. They should get rid of him before any more damage can be done to the precious world of Pokémon! >:O

Lacks green hair Touj! Well idk where it comes from but yeaah. owell :3

Anyway! I think it actually makes sense since it's based upon an area in America rather than Japan for the first time and as a result getting someone with more experience of that place makes it seem more "realistic". As bad as the Pokemon may have been, you really needed the western touch in order for the Pokemon to suit where they're based upon. Aaand I think he does this pretty well tbh. Garbodor, the Japanese-designed Pokemon was worse, so... count yourselves lucky? ;x

I like Mandibuzz, and Golurk isn't bad... But he should stay away from making pokemon like the icecream crap they let in.

Does it really matter where Game Freak get their designers from as long as they design good Pokemon for future games? Japanese or Westerner, it doesn't really matter as long as they can deliver the goods. Good for Mr Turner for being a 'pioneer' in this regard, even if I'm not a massive fan of any of his designs. (I certainly don't hate any of them, but I'm not really that fussed over them either.)

I'm not much of a fan of the Mandibuzz line but an Ice Cream Pokemon? That's bloody brilliant, I honestly can not see why people would not like an Ice Cream Pokemon. Golurk and Golett also pretty cool and they stand out amongst other Unova Pokemon that are quite forgettable. So I definitely think we could be seeing more western designers for future Pokemon games.

    Y'all iz jus' h8as

Vanilluxe is one of my favorite Pokemon from B/W. Golurk is also really cool, but I'm not too fond of the Vullaby line. They're cool, but I don't like them as much as the others. I like this guy. It's tough going to a place with people who speak a different language and be able to work with them. I think, even though you guys don't like the ice cream Pokemon, he did a good job.

Out of Turner's Pokemon, I liked Golett and Golurk, simply because they look like mechas.

I'm okay with the Vanillite line, but I'm not too fond of Vullaby and Mandibuzz.

Well actually it's a pokemon that's made out of ice but looks like ice cream...
I like his pokemon like Golett, and Mandibuzz. It seems great that they'll letting people of diffrent culture's work on the pokemon designs, it bring diffrent culture's into the game development.

Vanilite is not made of Ice cream. It has the Ice Cream Design, but it has a solid core made of pure ice. The Ice cream looking SNOW is something that built on top of it. You wanna complain about FOOD as Pokemon, Cherubi, Tropius. Freakin Cherry and Banana Tree made into Brachiosaur.

All three lines were amazing and it's also amazing that they brought in a westerner. It gives hopes to others that may want to follow in his footsteps. As for the actual use of each Pokemon, Golett stayed on my team until midway post E4. He was a freakin Tank. I liked Mandibuzz only cause she could naturally counter two of her major weaknesses naturally with a move that honestly looked weird on her at first but made more sense as time went on. Vanilite is just so cute and is a very capable Ice type Pokemon. If I didn't dislike Ice types as much as I do I would have used it being one of the only pleasing Ice Types this Generation in my opinion.

Kudos to James for opening up a path for future designers that want in on some Gamefreak action.

Vullaby and Mandibuzzz was a home run in my book, Golett/Golurk were pretty cool, and I thought Vanilite was pretty horrible, imo. :x

While i'm proud to see a westerner doing something for video games that doesn't involve chopping someone in half, he could of represented us a little bit better. Vullaby line is ugly, Golett line is kind of cool but doesn't seem like a pokemon, and Vanilite I think goes without saying.

On the bright side, at least he didn't design the trash bag!

All his designs seem just a little more goofy and cartoonish than they would otherwise be, which yes, I would attribute to him being a Westerner. I don't personally like this; Mandibuzz could've been badass if it didn't look like some Flintstones bastard child, that is if it weren't bald (example) and didn't have that bone in its head plumage. Given the likes of Murkrow and Honchkrow, it could've more likely been that way with an Eastern designer.

Ironic that the sole Westerner made the first mecha monsters; maybe the Japanese designers never felt so-inclined because mecha are omnipresent in their culture already. Recruiting designers from other cultures naturally means more variety in monster design, but they are in doing so going to stray from the conventional aesthetic sense of the franchise. The ultimate result of that could be alienation of older fans like myself, but we'll see at the time...

Does it really matter where his from?

The only designs I don't like are the ice-cream Pokemon line. Not very imaginative. The rest are pretty cool. But yes, his designs are very stock, they don't branch out too much from what they are based on which I don't like.

    Dear James Turner,

You are made of awesome and win and you know this. Keep designing Pokemon, please. :D

I don't get the hate on Vanillite. It's a good battler, really. Just give it a chance. And then there's Golett and Golurk... :swoon:

^ This by a million. We got a cherry in the previous Gen, why hate on Vanillite?

I've been saying for a while that Golett is an awesome Pokemon. The little guy's never let me down; if I needed that win, he'd get it for me. I have nothing but love for the little fella.

I was honestly surprised to hear that a westerner had designed some of the Pokemon for this Gen. But when I took a look at one of the designs, namely Golurk, it was love at first sight. I thought I had favorites from the previous Gens but I was wrong. Oh, I was so very, very wrong. There are no words to describe my adoration for Golett and Golurk. Those two are my absolute, honest to goodness favorites and they trump all previous faves by a mile. I'd love to see what else Mr. Turner can come up with, as he did create such awesome in this Gen. (Don't mind me--I'm a little biased.)

He is amazing cos he designed the Vanillite line, who are so cute!

I loved those little ice cream cones.

James Turner, keep designing great Pokemon!
