Johto with a difference.

Hi, I'm kinda new here. =]
I figure if anyone can explain this one to me they'll be on here.

I was just wondering about the fact that towards the end of the johto era, (end of season five in the dvd wallets) everything changes, visually at least. The colouring is alot more vivid and everything seems more simple.

eg. Misty's skin is more pink, and Jesse's hair and James' eyes are brighter.
Did Japan just want an update? Or was there a change in director or something...

Might be a dumb question, but it bothers me for some reason.

I believe that's when the show switched to digital animation; every episode before used hand-colored cell animation. The animation change started with "Here's Lookin' at You, Elekid!"(Ep. 261). It allowed better picture quality, color quality, etc. I heard some people didn't like the new style, but I'm up for anything new.

So, they didn't change companies... just technology?

    My bad...

Nope. They still had(and have) some of the same people too, I believe.

Edit: I also think the show needed that change. For an anime airing new episodes in the year 2002, it looked pretty old.

    I agree.
The update of technology benefited both the creators and the viewers.
It was a change for the better.

Although some people don't like the CGI they use now, I think they've improved it a lot. The 9th movie's CGI looked horrid, but in the episode "Journey to the Unown" in DP, it all looks pretty cool.

Yep, the Pokemon literally looked like plastic. PLASTIC!

Anyways, as everyone else said, the animators decided to digitally color the images to speed things up I guess. Then they started with the CGI, which was thankfully trained towards Diamond and Pearl.

The CGI definately look better in DP. During AG bubblebeam looked more like a barage of glass orbs.

Perhaps what people dislike about the new style make everything more colorfull, brighter. Personally it doesn't bother me, I like the new style better, it's more clearer. The old style suffers a bit from blurry imo.

that's true i like the new style also imo because it brings a more (this isn't some crappy episode we dug out the gutter) type of feeling and that every episode is at it's best

btw is there a difference between the diamond and pearl colors and the ova colors?

Ty to everyone who's posting replies <3333333 *maximum love*

It's good to know they didn't change companies.
The first few episodes of digital animation....I didn't liked, but i gues they weren't used to it yet.
Now that I've watched on a bit, it isn't a bad change =)
    It got better XD

I don't bother the new style. In some episodes it is bad, but in general the digital attacks are very good.
Anyway, the thing that bothers me more is that the show is now more "yankee" (not trying to offense). In the old episodes you could see more japanese culture, now we don't. I now they had to do it that way because the show is seen worldwide, but I don't like it...
