I've been wondering about the force known as destiny for a while. Do you think that there is something that makes our decisions and actions for us before we know we are going to make them? Are we on this earth to act out a script unknowingly?

I don't know about you guys, but it sounds ridiculous to me. For one, what exactly is making all of these decisions for us? A higher being or a God? Yeah, I've always believed that religion is crazy so that isn't going to change my opinion whatsoever.

How about you? Do you believe that we all have a destiny and that we are only here to do what we are meant to do or do we make our own decisions?

We make out on decisions, we create our own fate. If there is a God, then he put us here to make our own path in life, not follow a path that's already been carved out in stone for us.

You make your own decisions, there's no higher being above making them for you.

"k, go here and jump up and down for no reason"
Unless your name is Link, you live in Hyrule, and you're forced to "k, slice that chicken ovur n ovur til they attk u."

ANYWAYS, I make my own choices, which leads to my own destiny. I'm sure any avid religion goer could pull some argument out of their pocket to "prove" otherwise, but being the believer in science I am, I doubt I'd take any note of it.

I don't live be anyone's standards except my own. That includes destiny or any other mythical forces watching over me. People are going to do what they do, no one is making decisions for them except themselves.

I agree with Rekhyt, religion is silly and irrational. Live your life without worry and without thinking that God is watching your every move. Control what you can control, don't worry about anything else.

I don't believe in destiny, but whether we are acting out a script or moving by our own will it doesn't actually matter since the world wouldn't be any different either way.
The reason I don't believe in destiny is that we have a desire to do things, then do them. If destiny existed, I can't expect such a feeling would exist.

Now, if it's something of a prophecy like hero X will slay demon Y, then he could simply be assailed by sand ninjas or something along his way. One could argue that what the ancient prophecy book preaches is not the actual destiny of said hero, but like I said, it doesn't make bugger all of a difference whether destiny exists or not.

However much we would like to think that we are completely independent of outside forces, we shouldn't forget that much of what makes us ourselves is dependent on what exists around us. People can often be reflections of the impressions given to them by others early on. Think about every social convention, every aspect of courtesy that you follow without even realizing it. Many of your subconscious decisions are in fact not truly yours, but are reflections of behaviors that you observe. Beneath the individuality that comes with the instinct of childhood rebellion is a base of general behavior and mindset that was put there earlier than any of us can remember. In a sense, one could argue that certain people raised in the certain emotional environments are "destined" to be religious for a long time.

We control our own lives. To say otherwise is an attempt at excusing yourself from responsibility for your actions.

I think there's a big difference between acting out a previously created script and making decisions about what should happen on your own. One allows you to be an individual, the other forces you to act a certain way. The outward appearance might be the same in either case, but the inside would be entirely different.

Wait...I guess we talked about that, huh?

To say that one's environment does not have any effect on how one's life is lead is a sign of a fear of losing one's identity as a person. Regardless, I'm not talking about conscious decisions, I'm talking about more subconscious inclinations. There are some people to whom the idea of there being no God had never really occurred to until so late in their lives that they may have been psychologically unable to deal with that concept. I'm just saying that surroundings should not be underestimated when analyzing human development. Decision making isn't a black and white process, there are influences both from ourselves and from those with whom we were raised around.

I make my own choices and make my own paths. I am a full-out chistian, but God cannot take care of everything for you. You have to control your own destiny.

I'm guessing you took my last post as directed at you? I didn't mean that, lol. I know that surroundings can influence people.

What I was saying is that people are ultimately responsible for themselves. If someone grew up around a crowd of murderers, and they became a murderer, it wouldn't be very surprising but they would still be responsible for their actions.

Destiny? Nah, not for me. I believe that I'm in charge of my life and my actions, and I don't rely on "destiny" to explain things that happen to me or that have to do with me. Destiny reminds me too much what you find in fairy tales, to be honest. :x
