Adela is a fairly average teenage girl, though from an athletic definition of "average." At five feet eight inches, she quite literally looks down on most other girls her age, while standing about the same height or slightly shorter than most boys. Her muscle provides her with a healthy one hundred and sixty pounds of weight, all kept together under her smooth, olive toned skin. Her legs are thick and powerful and her arms and upper body are gracefully imposing, thanks to her years of participation in track and field, running, and rock climbing. Her breasts sit on the smaller side of average for her height, and her waist appears average, looking less slim than it might otherwise be considered thanks to the muscles surrounding it. She has a long scar on her right arm, stretching from just beneath the outer end of her shoulder to just above her elbow, which she received from a climbing accident when she was fourteen. Her nails are kept manicured and designed, often with bright colors in intricate patterns.
Her face is slender, but its features are curved. Her forehead gently slopes out from beneath her long, chestnut hair, which is typically kept up and over her shoulder using a violet ribbon, and end at her small, thin eyebrows. Beneath those sit her almond shaped, deep amber eyes that are slightly upturned at the far ends, with striking dark eyelashes adorning them. Her nose is petite and curved at the end, with a ridge that curves inward toward the top of her face. Her faint pink lips are slim and upturned, giving her expression a soft glow even when in a neutral state. Her ears are small and round, with a slight point at the upper end and detached lobes at the bottom. They're pierced and typically decorated with short drop-style earrings.
As far as clothing is concerned, her wardrobe ranges from yoga pants and sweatshirts to tee shirts and shorts, cozy long sleeves and jeans, and climbing apparel. When looking for a more stylish ensemble, she typically wears turtle necks and light scarves. She can most often be seen donning athletic sneakers or climbing boots. Her garments tend to be brighter colors, such as turquoise and aquamarine, or black. She always wears a reinforced black leather belt that has slots for her to store her six main poké balls, and she usually carries a large hiking backpack and a smaller drawstring bag, favoring one or the other depending on her purposes. On brighter days, she enjoys wearing sunglasses and a bright baseball cap to ward off the sun, and she has a heavy cotton jacket lined with faux Liepard fur for when the weather turns cold.
One of Adela's greatest strengths comes in the form of her athleticism; her literal physical strength. She actively participates in track events and is an avid rock climber, and, as a result, her legs and upper body have become quite powerful over the years. She can easily pull herself up from precarious positions, leap over large gaps, outrun most anyone she encounters, and wrestle away from opponents. Of course, all of these talents find their way into everyday activities, and have gotten Adela out of many a scrape, ranging from simply keeping her balance to outrunning an angry Primeape . . . which is a long story for another time.
Mentally, she's a quick-thinker, processing most stimuli with great speed and responding in kind as necessary. She's not the most intelligent person, but she knows quite well how to handle herself in the day-to-day puzzles of life. She's also a great actress and, by extension, a fantastic liar, which could be seen as either positive or negative. When combined with her honest nature, however, it's more a positive trait than anything. The way in which she's honest is not that she always tells the truth, but that she prefers to play fair, and she does not steal or cheat, with few exceptions to the latter, often involving "evening the odds" with her opponent if they're being dishonest, because, after all, she prefers a fair game.
As far as social relationships go, she's an amicable and charismatic individual, always trying to be friendly to everyone she meets. She greets new faces with a smile and tries to be as polite as possible, and she goes through life carrying a bag of empathy that she's ready to pour on any anguished soul she sees . . . so long as she's paying attention, at least. She's a caring person in that sense, but she's also incredibly carefree, doing her best to avoid letting anything bring her down for too long. Being sad is quite sad, so why do it?
In battle, she's a powerful tactician, which is the one area where her intelligence is apparent. She knows how to read her opponents and respond accordingly, and she doesn't allow herself to psyched out for more than a second. She works well on a team, valuing cooperation when it's available. The fact that she gets along relatively well with most people helps in that regard.
Beyond that, she's bilingual, speaking both English and Spanish, and she's a well-cultured individual, always open to new ideas and learning as much as she can about the world around her and beyond her.
Sometimes Adela's good nature can get the best of her. She's a bit oblivious, not always getting what people mean, particularly when it comes to romantics or passive-aggressive natures. Because of this, she can be rather gullible, and her amiability may border on naïvety. She's also not the smartest individual or the most well educated. She may be intelligent when it comes to people and battling, but technical thinking can sometimes stump her. Thankfully, she manages to avoid such blockades for a majority of the time.
She's also a bit of a dreamer. Her attention isn't the easiest beast to capture, and she often finds herself losing interest rather quickly in many scenarios. Due to this, she tends to drift off into daydreams, and it can be difficult to rouse her from her reveries. Despite this, she can remain incredibly focused as long as a topic doesn't bore her.
On a superficial level, she's rather self-conscious. She doesn't oft worry about makeup or the like, but she does concern herself with her physical fitness and appearance, and she tends to dote over how well she presents herself as a person. That's one of the reasons why she always tries to be friendly and polite, afraid of what people might think of her if she comes off as too brash or insulting.
One of her most noticeable issues is her competitive streak. One might say that she's a bit too competitive, primarily when it comes to running, climbing, and battling. She doesn't know when to give up and doesn't know how to accept defeat. She's outrageously stubborn when things begin to go south, and often won't give up even when it's clear that she's lost. When such a point is reached, she can become rather antagonistic, with her competitive attitude being one of the only things that can override her polite and self-conscious attitude.
On that note, she's quick to become defensive in similar situations, and in general when someone antagonizes her. She's easily irritated when she or her companions, including her pokémon, are threatened in any way, and when upset, she tends to become reckless, charging into situations where she normally knows she should not go, and this never mixes well with her competitive nature.
Like any competitive teenager, Adela strives to excel in all the fields in which she partakes. Becoming a powerful battler and a master athlete are among her top goals, and perhaps to one day take what she's learned and teach it to others, whether it be as a tutor, gym leader, or what have you. She also wants to see as much of the world as she can while she's young enough to truly enjoy it, which includes experiencing and learning as much about other cultures as she can.
Other than that, she only really wants to make friends, have fun, find love and eventually build a family. She's a pretty simple gal, after all.
As for hobbies, there's the obvious one in the form of sports and exercise. She also enjoys reading, performing as an actress, attending plays and musicals, and watching Netflix while spoiling herself with sweets.
Adela is an only child, born to a father of pure Basque blood and a mother of both Hawaiian and Romanian lineage. Her father, Sendoa Garaile Azarola Mendoza, is an engineer who enjoys crafting all sorts of strange objects during his spare time. He's a tall and attractive man, and it's from him that Adela received her natural charm. Her mother, Iolana Konani Dalca, is the epitome of grace, and from her Adela learned her empathy. Both are, in Adela's opinion, wonderful people, and they were only ever as strict and harsh as they needed to be—something Adela isn't fond of admitting, as she knows they've always been right when she pitted herself against them, and likely always will be.
Both of her parents raised pokémon growing up, but never took on any gym challenges or other such competitions. Her father used to dabble in racing and other "unconventional" pokémon events, but that's about as far as his pokémon battling experience ever went. Her mother, always an angel of peace, tried out pokémon coordination for a time, and while she thoroughly enjoyed it, she never became much of a contestant herself.
Lonán Fintan Driscoll, a boy of Irish descent not much older than Adela, has always been her main competitor. They consider one another friends, but they've never really interacted much beyond pokémon battling and athletic competitions. Still, they share a pleasant relationship, and are always out to one up the other while having as much fun as they possibly can while doing so.
"Is that really all you've got?" Lon yelled from across the field. Del gave him a sarcastic smirk as she hoisted herself up onto to rock face above.
"I'd like to see you do better!" she called back with a laugh, turning to help up Basajuan, her father's Mankey.
The redheaded Irish boy returned her smirk as he began to run up the side of Reversal Mountain, his Growlithe darting about beside his legs. He launched himself onto the rock wall and pulled himself up to a ledge, his little red canine taking a longer way up, but not for a moment falling behind.
For them, this was just another day: recklessly scale the side of a mountain while battling pokémon, entertaining themselves while basically ignoring all risks that they were taking. Of course, the latter part didn't even occur to them. Their minds were occupied elsewhere.
"Basa, Screech!" Adela commanded the little ape that was climbing onto her shoulders.
Basajuan complied eagerly, opening his mouth and loosing an ear-shattering wail that knocked Lon off balance and loosened a bit of the reddish-brown stone beneath his feet. He stumbled backward slightly, grabbing onto an outcrop as his Growlithe cowered under his legs, shielding his ears.
Once he regained his balance, Lon let out a hearty laughter. He ran to the side and ducked behind a boulder as he shouted a command to his partner.
"Cináed, Flame Wheel!"
The red pup bared his fangs and loosed a torrent of fangs that quickly ignited his fur. He leaped into the air and began moving in a vicious arc towards Adela and Basa. The white ape jumped off onto a ledge above Adela as she moved to the side, turning her face as the warm flames licked at her skin.
They were playing a dangerous game, but both were so accustomed to it that it phased neither of them. Del flipped around, stretched her hand up and began to climb. Lon did the same a couple dozen meters away as Basa and Cin took their own reins, battling it out on their way up the mountain.
It was a desperate scramble for the top. After all, the loser had to buy the ice cream.
