... which stemmed from their comments on religious homophobia?

Not a good idea in a LGBT thread. :/

Like Erica said, it's a thread that should have serious discussions such as gay marriage, and with marriage generally being a religious thing and with religion being one of the main bodies where homophobia is ripe then it's more than a good idea to hear from the religious side as well and try and reach an understanding.

I'll agree to a degree with that, but when they storm in telling us all how homophobia is a sin etc. etc... I don't enjoy being told that I'm against "God's will" or whatever.

Don't you mean "homosexuality"?
Either way, if they believe it to be a sin then does it really justify ridicule of their faith? That in itself is just as bad as homophobia.

Erp, yeah, I meant homosexuality. *durp*

And if they believe what we do and how we live is a sin, wouldn't it be far better to simply look away than to storm into the middle of our discussions and tell us all that it's wrong?

I don't care what others think, but I don't enjoy being told flat out that I'm bad when there was no provocation or anything.

The operative word there being "discussions"

So, you want an echo room? (Warning the comparison might offend you sensitive people) If you see drug addicts on the streets of New York, and they have done nothing to you, you still get disgusted, and tell them to go away.

No, because I'm not harsh. I don't live anywhere near New York, so I don't know about the severity there, but I am polite towards strangers in the street regardless of their situation. And I attempt to repeat this manner when speaking to people I don't know over the internet.

And I'm sorry that my replys are coming under such scrutiny, but I'm rather tired, it's quite late where I am and I don't want to have to justify myself any more, so I bid you goodnight.

Um, let's not compare homosexuals to drug addicts. :| That's just asking for a flamewar.

Also telling off random drug addicts in the street is probably just asking to be beaten up, just saying.

Maybe the fact that he's a drug addict shouldn't concern anyone else. Shouldn't we all mind our own business and let people who are concerned on the topic talk within themselves. That would make it a little less complicated, yes?

I think what he was saying is, that drugs are a social taboo, and for some religious people, so is homosexuality. Some people view it as a life choice such as drugs, and therefore have negative ideals about it. Challenging such ideas with rational debate as opposed to "we was all maed wiv sxctimz" or "shut up just please shut up" does nothing more than aggitate such people further.

Then we must live with what people taboo us with. You can't change someone's opinion, that stands so strongly, easily. And sometimes, there's no way to keep those agitated trolls from talking, other then ignoring them, I guess.

No, you can change those opinions, I was really racist as a child because older people i was friends with taught me it was right, through befriending a boy in my class at middle school who was from Bangledesh i realised how wrong I had being to judge people based on race. It's up to you to break through those religious stigmas with patiences and cooperation.

I meant you can't change an opinion of someone with a strong opinion on a subject, easily.

Wait, why would I hate or despise that which I do not understand? I mean... I don't watch the news (which in itself is probably biased anyway), but after watching one segment, should I hate all Iraqis or should I even be hating the insurgents, when I know little of the history?

People need to open their mind... They should realize that they can learn things with a bit of research... It's called being informed.

So simply, I would not hate the drug addict, I might disagree with what he is doing, but hating him would be akin to the ad hominem failure in debate.

Not to mention, misconceptions... A person being gay is not all about sex or gay pride parades... Those people who believe that, have never asked questions in regards to the gay lifestyle... It's called ignorance.

Lastly, casting fear/doubt etc on people was never a good idea, it can lead to not only inner, but outer destruction of an individual...

Why humankind cannot live together as one, is beyond me... But I do have some small ideas as to why...

In other news, I got my haircut today, and it's lovely! XD

And for the hell of it:

Being gay rocks! XD

Hmm.. Has this thread become a debate? That's too bad. Why don't we revert to the question at hand? I didn't bother to read every post in this thread, but is anyone trans? I don't know any transgender folks down here in Alabama (at least none that know they are). Actually, I know very few people down here who even know what transgender/transsexual means, or they think they do but are completely wrong. I think it's too bad that the trans community is so meager and looked down upon. But I suppose every group of "different" people started out that way, am I right? it would be wonderful if this thread turned into a deep political and/or psychological discussion. I would be happy to participate. But anyway, anyone out there trans?

It's a shame that there is a red squiggle under the word "transgender", lol.

I don't know where you got the idea that I, or anyone hates the drug adicts there are rehabilitation for them. You know what, that gave me a great idea. We should have rehabilitation for gays too. Lol jk don't shoot me. XD

And the true trollers are the ones who don't want discussion, and just talk off topic.

I'm not even gonna lie, I've always being a little iffy on what's classed as transgender and whether transexual is something different. I always figured that if you generally feel a different gender to your body, then the term shouldn't be transgender, as it carries the feel of a transition, transformation etc. I think that word should only be applied to those who have had the op. Maybe RevGender or something would suit better? Something that better explains that someone is in the wrong body.

Well, to me saying "transsexual" seems like it implies something to do with sexual activity; whereas, "transgender" seems to imply transitioning from one sex to the other. I'm not totally sure on all the terms myself, but in the term "bisexual", "sexual" is referring to sexual activity, not gender orientation, so is it different for transsexuals, since "sexual" in "transsexual" is referring to gender orientation. Also, if a transsexual person has had all the surgery, wouldn't they be considered to be their target gender and no longer be considered trans? Before a trans person has surgery, they are usually referred to as "pre-op", and after they have surgery, they are referred to as "post-op".

This. I was sort of racist when I was young because of people around me and until high school I made fun of gays and I'm sure lots of other groups of people. I changed. Others can change.

Yes, there are a few of us around. Perhaps more. You can never tell with the internet.

To be honest I'm not one for names and labels and all of that, but I'm fine with the term transgender. To me, sex refers to your organs, gender to your identity so the term transsexual (two 's's) carries too much of a physical connotation (and some baggage from times past). It would be a mistake to say that all people who don't feel comfortable with their physical self (us transpeople) want to change our bodies completely, that it's all about genitalia or whatnot. It's about identity, feeling and acting what jives with your image of yourself. Some people feel they need it all: gender reassignment surgery, hormones, the works. Some don't.

"Trans" means "across" or something like that so I take it to mean crossing the physical barrier you were born with. Something like that. But like I said, I prefer not using labels.
