I greatly prefer religious debates over "lololol this guy i saw was hot :3" which is what this thread devolved into many pages ago.
I agree completely.

I think it's just kind of a non-issue. :( It's never really spoken about here because either no one cares or it's just... not a huge, controversial deal.
That's how it is? I'm changing my opinion of Canada. It's even better now. Don't ever change.

I might not notice it so much because I live in Ontario which is a very liberal province. (And specifically, I've mostly lived in Toronto for years and years and it's one of the most tolerant/diverse places I've ever been.) But I think it's moreso that not enough people are aware of gender issues. :/ Everyone's still a bit stuck back on gay issues but once all that is fully straightened out and if gender issues are ever brought into the spotlight, I imagine there wouldn't be some sort of uproar. I don't think anyone would overly care either way?
I remember Harper tried to bring it up again (only once after it had been approved), and it was shot down by the rest of parliament, so it can't really be talked about again. As especially teh Senate would have them move on.
I wanted to find him and kick him really hard when he tried to bring up the gay marriage thing again... but omg I was so proud of my country when it was shot down so quickly. :')

We still don't have the ideal gay rights here, but we're definitely on our way.

Well obviously gay marriage in Canada didn't cause the apocalypse right?

EDIT: Throat, that is a good argument on why religion is so silly. OMGZ HUMANS ARE TEH GREATEST. LETZ ABUZE EVERY OTHA' LVIN THING!! DRILL BABY DRILL!!
God gave us dominion over animals but said not to abuse them.

Funny, as christians are among those known as animal-abusers.

Same as there is a commandment that says you shall not kill, but christians serve in wars and kill all the time.

As has been said, it's not good to go through your so-called holy book and pick out the good bits and ignore the rest. If you followed the Bible as it said, christians wouldn't let women speak and would think it fine to sleep with their own daughters.

Now can we get back to LGBT discussion? It's fine if the religious stuff is linked to homophobia arguments, but this is getting quite far off topic.

Haven't you ever heard the story of Tony the fish? (this is fictional and evolutionary incorrect but follows the same basic principals):

Tony was the first fish to have feet. The other fish ostracised him for being different, and then suddenly Tony discovered the use of his feet and became the best fish.
At that moment, if Tony could look ahead a few short hundreds of millions of years, he would see an israeli jew by the name of Jesus being nailed to a cross by the very feet Tony gave him for having a sort of schizophrenic discourse with a 'God' who was created by humans to explain the existance of feet in the absence of the knowledge of the existance of Tony.

LINK

That was the best damn explanation I ever heard XD

Bisexual

*Raises hand.* Female, bisexual, no pref.

*Stops, turns.*

Please no religious confrontations.

I like how atheists on the Internet totally have the wrong idea of religion. You can't clump all religious people in together as being the stereotypical fundamentalist extremists. many, many so-called religious people aren't practicing at all, and people like me have a very liberal idea of religion. I'm a Christian, but I haven't read the Bible in at least five years, and I haven't been to a mass in about a year or two. When I was growing up, my mother told me that all you need to be a good Christian is faith in the powers that be, pray regularly, and follow Jesus's commandment, "Love one another, as I have loved you."

...and guess what? I'm not a homophobe. I take the, "love the sinner, hate the sin" mentality...or, in this case, the, "I don't care what you do in the bedroom" mentality. So, in the future, I'd appreciate it if people don't assume that just because you're a Christian that you have to be homophobic (or all those more archaic discriminatory ideals that often get brought up in these debates).

Sorry, we make assumptions that Christians actually follow the Bible which contains not only homophobia, but also sexism and a whole host of other turrible* things.

*Please read that in Cleveland's voice.

What if Animals now are the way we were supposed to be created? No worry about anything, not having to follow rules, no pursuit for knowledge, maybe the way God intended.

About Canada, I went there once to Vancouver and it ROCKS. I loved it, I mean I like living in the United States, and I want to continue living here, because of our better health care, and other sorts of things. It's nice up there, and I think we, in the US really need to catch up with society, in homophobic sorts and sexism.

Hey, don't lump all us atheists together.

Sorry, we make assumptions that Christians actually follow the Bible
And don't speak for all us atheists either.

I include prayer in my don't-care-what-you-do-in-the-bedroom policy. Maybe my own situation gives me a unique perspective on life, but I think that whatever someone wants to call themselves is alright. I don't believe in rigid definitions for people. So if you want to call yourself a Christian even if you haven't read the bible in years then who am I to say you're not. I expect people to accept me for who I am even if it doesn't make sense to them so the least I can do is the same for others.

The majority of society is homophobic. Only European (and I do consider Canada to be politcally and socially European) views are less homophobic and less sexist.

:[

Also, atheism isn't about not following the rules. I'm Agnostic which is Atheism (Agnosticism is Atheism, Atheism is not Agnosticism) I follow rules. I have have morals. I was raised to follow them, without religion as a factor. Thus proving religion does not mean for good morals. In fact, I know so many evil religious people than I do evil atheists. Why? Because a lot of people have in their head that "Hey, I go to church sometimes. I believe in God. He'll forgive me for no matter what!"

So, yeah.

Edit:

Yeah, did you just say the US has a better health care system? XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!! YOU OBVIOUSLY DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO ANYTHING! XDDDDDD LOOK IT UP YOURSELF! XD THE ONLY PEOPLE SAYING IT'S BETTER ARE REPUBLICANS WHO HAVE JUST OPENLY ADMITED TO LYING TO THE PUBLIC AND USING FEAR TACTICS TO GAIN VOTES! XDDDDD! YOU! XDDD!

Ah, overreacting. o3o

DONT JUDGE ME
Whatever I mean we have like better surgeons, and people get flown to the US from Canada to have bypass, not talking about quality of the hospital and stuff. Either way, I'd rather not get into politics, I'm not a republican or democrat, both are so horribly wrong about many things

People read the bible in different ways. Not everything is literal in it. Much of it is Metaphor or taken Contextually.

The bible's main source to many people is a basis for their want to be a better person and help others. To believe in the greater good and to believe in what's right.

Just because you stopped believing (I know you personally so I know that you were religious on some level) doesn't mean you can bash other people who are religious. I'm not particularly religious but I think that you shouldn't, first of all, speak for other homosexuals and their views by saying "we" (let them speak for themselves) and I think you shouldn't be so condescending towards others. It doesn't make you look any better, because you aren't better. We're all equal here.

For speaking about how other homophobes should be more open minded, I think you should take your own advice and be more open minded about the people around you. The poster who responded to you did so in a respectable manner that was NOT bashing your own beliefs, but asking you to respect theirs.

You responding like this isn't gonna help your cause in any way. People who are set in their ways with homophobia are only still going to be set in their ways, and you'll just come off being an obnoxious guy with a very apparent grudge against people who don't see it your way.

It's just a heads up, but I really don't think gays and straights and religious and non religious people have to be such separatists. It's the individuals that cause this separation with attitude.

The "we" was actually internet atheists, not gays.

Well even Scarf seemed slightly irritated or possibly offended with the fact that you used "we" so, regardless of what you were referring to, it's still goes either way and I would think that people should be able to speak for themselves.

I propose that we begin to wind this biblical topic down? I mean, I'm aware of religion's dabblings in homophobia, but I swear, the same point must have been raised about three times now.

All in favour? *raises hand*
