So Nintendo countered Dragon types with Fairy type, which consist of the cute to moderate pokemon that attract more female players and keep the OPness crazies at bay, by letting them know that someone's pokemon has the potential to take them down, and it could be a small little critter... or at least, that's what we hope the type is about.

Now for the real innovation to enter the game, we could use a type that spreads epicness and fighting potential. A great many thought this is what should have been there instead of Fairy, so here it is: Light. An overdue pokemon type, but hey, just think of what kind of pokemon could have it. The pokedex miscalculated solrocks as Rock/Psychic, but are actually Rock/Light. A nice twist could be that the Light type is more of a "Sun" kind of type. Here are its strengths and weaknesses:

    Light

    Offensive
    2x Dark
    2x Steel
    1/2x Psychic
    1/2x Fire
    1/2x Fairy
    1/2x Grass
    1/2x Light
    0x Ghost

    Defensive
    2x Dark
    2x Grass
    1/2x Steel
    1/2x Psychic
    1/2x Fire
    1/2x Fairy
    1/2x Rock
    1/2x Light
    0x Ghost

    v2:
    Offensive
    2x Dark
    2x Rock (absorbs sunlight)
    1/2x Steel (reflects sunlight)
    1/2x Fire
    1/2x Fairy
    1/2x Grass
    1/2x Light
    0x Ghost

    Defensive
    2x Dark
    2x Grass
    1/2x Steel
    1/2x Fire
    1/2x Fairy
    1/2x Rock
    1/2x Light
    0x Ghost

A little on the defensive side, but with complex defenses for thinking players, and watch your limits. If anyone wants to suggest changes go right ahead.

Some Grass type pokemon would have an ability that heals instead from Light type moves. Maybe that is how rock and steel types work? Shiny steel pokemon can have an ability that take half damage from Light moves and dark-coloured Rock or Steel type pokemon can have an ability that take more damage to light type, but their power is also increased by 1.5x after being hit by an attack.

    v3:
    Offensive
    2x Dark
    1/2x Fire
    1/2x Fairy
    1/2x Grass
    1/2x Light
    0x Ghost

    Defensive
    2x Dark
    2x Grass
    1/2x Fire
    1/2x Fairy
    1/2x (Something)
    1/2x Light
    0x Ghost

I like the light type concept but there isnt many pokemon u can create based off of that concept, I dont know how they pokemon would even look. But maybe light to counter dark type but not that many pokemon are even dark type. Maybe "light" and "myth" type can be added like a set of mythical or unseen pokemon that are said to exist in a new town. This would allow for creative pokemon and room for some cool new moves. A griffon Eveelution would be neat.

Dark type doesn't mean dark colors in the context of dark types, it means deceptiveness and evil (Japanese and Korean translations have Dark type as "Evil type"). That being said Light type could maybe, just maybe work out if it means the opposite of dark, as in evil. I don't see Light Type really working out, though, as there are some redundancies.

I just thought of an interesting concept for a new type. We all know that Electric types only have one weakness to Ground types, so what if they gained another weakness. Naturally, rubber blocks electricity. What if there was a plastic/rubber type called "Artificial" type? I could see Garbodor becoming Poison/Artificial or Electrode being Electric/Artificial.

Electric types have two weaknesses. Ground and Rock.

I don't think we really need any more new types. The only type that really didn't have a type to fully counter it (as in it took 2x damage on defense and dealt out 1/2x damage on offense when being attacked by/attacking a certain type) was Dragon. I'm assuming the Fairy type will fix that and from there I think it's basically perfect, or as close to perfect as it can be.

Uhh no it's just one weakness, ground.

Wow I derped so hard. I don't know why I thought they were weak to rock. I'm just going to go to bed before I say something else stupid. *facepalm*

Going to push this into Pokemon Gaming Central, as there's no place for speculating on new types(we're only getting Fairy) in 6th gen, especially when the thread is about even later gens. (Although I personally find it odd to talk about something beyond a new upcoming gen... eh).

Speak for yourself. =p I hope some of them will relate to older fairy myths, of which there's a lot more than just cutsey fairys to base designs off. (And small critters beating up giant Pokemon has always been a thing, given the pixie legendaries, or stuff like FEAR Rattata...)

If you want to have a Light type, you should have a Dark type as well. The existing Dark type isn't so "darkish" as people think, its commonly mistaken as the opposite of light. No, it's actually the Evil type, something GameFreak should have renamed it to ages ago. And it already has a counterpart, that has oh-so-many similarities to Light, the FIGHTING type. Comparing only offenses and defenses, it's obviously a very strong type.

Thus I conclude something like this will be very redundant.
Especially when there are three types which share similarities with Light:
    Fighting, Fairy and Psychic.

I don't think there would be another new type right now, Fairy is enough for me because I need to try and learn all the Fairy strengths and weaknesses before I can start thinking about new types. Fairy was brought in to counter Dragon-types and level the competitive field. And I don't see any "Light" type coming especially given what the Dark-type is called in Japanese.

Fighting is the Light type. Fire already covers the element of light, heat and the Sun; remember, these are elemental types, not common objects for a group of monsters to be based on.

Since I've read that Mawile will be Steel-Fairy, and given that it's based on a futakuchi-onna, that will probably be true.

No, it's actually the Evil type, something GameFreak should have renamed it to ages ago.
If they renamed it to Evil or similar, people would just ask for a Good type instead; and calling Fighting something like Good or Hero would be less accurate than calling Evil Dark, since many Fighting-types are quite brutish in appearance and/or manner.

I don't think it's necessary to add in a counterpart type to anything -- it's too cliche and kind of takes away from the game. As many other people already brought up, there are already variations that come quite close to the English light-type that many people so seek, if they really want to go that way. But following so close to such lines kind of transforms it into a generic turn-based strategy clone; just about every RPG of its kind fancies having strictly opposing types to counter the other. If you had to add yet another type, I'd rather have it called something original than something very common.

I honestly want to say that Gamefreak has pretty much told us they may not do a Light type. Its been asked for since Gen 2 revealed Dark Types and the first time in 4 generations that they release a new type and it ISN'T Light.

I think its time we put the light type to rest. We may not get any new types for a few more generations to come.

Considering how many Water-types can learn Ice Beam.

This is true. Considering the Water type is sturdy already, you're forced to teach your Dragon an electric type move at times.

But let's give it a rest. The Fighting type has(or had, as of the current post date) five advantages and two weaknesses, has anyone complained? It'll take some time, but we'll get used to it.
