As a kid i was baffled at the fact that Farfecthd did not evolve into Doduo... xD
When i replayed some Gen3 games, after the Physical/special split was implemented, i was really surprised to find out Ghost is a physical move...indeed, that is something that still bugs me

I mean like seriously, if you compare Wobbuffet's arms and Wynaut's appendages, you can sorta see the resemblance. I still can't really accept this fact yet. :x

I agree about the EV training thing, except it was th beginning off gen 5 for me.
Also, never realized unown weren't breedable until recently:/

My experience is similar; I thought that Seviper was the evolution of Arbok, but I found out that was wrong, and my brain exploded! Okay not really, but the anime made a mistake on that and I believed it until I played Fire Red.

The Wobbuffet/Wynaut deal with the ears being actually arms does sorta make sense, in a way. They're blow-up punching bags (look at those dex entries) with the Pokémon really being the black tail... so having arms to manipulate is probably more useful to it than fake ears that can't hear anything anyway.

Unown are breedable?!!?!!? Well there's a mind blow for me....

Huh, I didn't realise that myself. Neat, I suppose.
