Move subscriptions to notifications.

I'd like to utilize thread subscriptions, but the way they work by default doesn't really do much good for me unless I go into my dashboard and view them, which I eventually forget about and then threads that I like to keep track of I end up not checking for months, and only because I randomly remember they exist for one reason or another.

It'd be really cool to get a notification every time someone replies to a thread your subscribe to, just like how you get a notification when someone likes one of your posts or quotes something you wrote.

This makes sense to me, and sounds useful. (Well, in general, as I don't use subscriptions). Also seems like it's really an obvious 'use' for the notification system we have... I'd be for that to be implemented sometime.

    I like this idea.

Would it work as a new notification every single time someone posts? Or if two people post in a thread while you are offline, would the newest notification replace the old one so you only get one notification total? Hopefully that makes sense.

Personally, I would prefer one for every post but I see how that can get annoying for the super active threads. If there would be a way for the notification to link to the post made the latest since you visited the thread, but also state who replied that would be cool.

Example: "Hey, bobandbill and El Hero replied to your thread Move subscriptions to notifications."

Clicking on the notification will link to bobandbill's post, and then you can read the rest of it chronologically.

But you can get email notifications for this stuff lol I can see how it could be useful at face-value, but that'd be hefty on the already-bugged notification system. Imagine someone who is subscribed in the Forum Games forum... *shudders* Would the system even handle being able to scroll through a mass notification of 30 subscription replies, VMs, PMs, quotes, blogs, etc. if it still gives ghost PMs all the time and bugs out with duplicates?

Maybe something generic like "a thread you've subscribed to has a new reply" that when clicked goes to your CP dashboard. Notification system is already glitchy :pink_no: Any more than that and you'll break PC lol

You really have no idea how the notifications system works in practice.

You're right. I'm not behind-the-scenes nor a coder. I just know from experience that it's still glitchy when displaying information and even still reports "ghost" quotes, VMs, etc. and that it doesn't seem like a good idea to add more "features" to a system that has never 100% worked correctly. Adding might just exacerbate already-known issues or just create a bigger mess.

Or, it might not do anything at all. I'm just looking at the other side of the coin where I'd fix my house's foundation first before trying to add a second story.

Since I'm subscribed to so many threads and since the Dashboard does a good job in listing threads with new replies (I'm basically in my dashboard all the time when many others browse the index), I really think people will find it more useful if they get directed there more often :) as Nick says, he just forgets to. So I love this idea, if it is implementable.

Yesss :pink_nod: What you quoted earlier was a work-around idea just in case it'd be too absurd / broken to add it the way Patchy initially described. Like I mentioned earlier, the notification system still has some glitches to work out, and depending on how something like this would be added, I'd rather not get double notifications for fifteen new replies in a single thread (effectively making it thirty, with half being "ghosts"). The notification system works fine most of the time, but I still get the glitchies often enough that I wonder whether or not it's a good idea to keep adding code or add-ons to the system :pink_tongue:

If it can be done without worsening the "ghosts" and the double-notifications or the wrong notifications (a PM that's never received and comes up in the system as a VM, for example) then totally go for it :pink_nod: Otherwise, I'd think it smart to fix that first before adding in anything else.

Subscribed threads also go to your email, too, as well as the CP Dashboard. I know notifications are easier and not everyone is in their email often enough (or get notifications of an email sent to their cellphone (like me)), but again just a work-around if for the timebeing adding it as a function to notifications would do more harm than good (till the basic system is fixed anyway).

Totally for it if it can be done and ghost notifications, fakes, etc. go away simultaneously :pink_tongue: All I'm really saying is maybe fix those problems / the founding code first before adding more features lest it just add to the issue and make it even more frustrating.

I still don't know what was PM'd to me the other day since the notification system glitched it out and never came through :pink_no: Oh the mysteries. Doesn't even show up in my User CP. Darn system glitch.
