I do it sometimes when I don't want people to hear or understand what I said. My little brother does it as well for the same reason.

Why yes I do. My mother was in a rock band in the 80s...so her hearing is pretty much shot. Howevre, when around my aunts, when I mutter, it normally results in a slap to the back of the head XD

If I get overly excited or nervous, not only do I mutter, but I also talk fast. It's especially fun at work when customers are like "WHAT?". I'm an incoherent mess at times, but I'm okay with it.

As for muttering in terms of grumbling and complaining, it's not something I usually do. I tend to keep those things to myself. Usually. XD;
