Nanu is the island Kahuna of Ula Ula island. He was previously an officer for Interpol and has ties with both Looker and Annabelle. He's depicted as depressed and dark in the series. He's the dark type specialist of the game as well.

As I'm sure anyone can tell by my posts and profile I'm a huge Nanu Stan. Dare I say, the biggest Nanu fangirl out there. Honestly, I think he's the best Pokémon character to date. Mainly because he's the most relatable and generally just breaks the mold. Unlike most characters he's not happy go lucky, he doesn't like battling and gives off a depressed vibe. Tbh, I love it. I personally relate to him as our personality/profession/ way we carry ourselves is identical. What do you think of Nanu? Love him? Hate him? Indifferent?

soooo a bit of a rant.

i think it's really unfair when people kind of... don't give Nanu due credit for his role in SM/USUM. what i mean by this is that, for all intents and purposes, while he is a Dark-type Kahuna, people dismiss this as Game Freak not really introducing the first ever Dark-type Gym Leader, for reasons i'm not really sure i understand (mostly semantics?). it's odd to me because Nanu is a great character with great personality and one of the more memorable parts of Alola for me and all because people don't like the Trial Captains/Kahuna system, they'd pretend Nanu didn't exist and keep complaining about the complete lack of Dark-type Gym Leaders. i mean in a technical way they're right, but also wrong? but that'd be getting into, again, more of a semantics argument of terms which seems like a waste of time.

    anyway, Nanu is cool. /rant.

Even though technically he's not a gym leader, he kinda is. Kahuna's were essentially the same thing as gym leaders in S/M. I don't really understand why people don't like the trials/kahunas. Fans always complain that all Pokémon games are the same, so they finally try to do something different and they still complain.

He was one of the better characters in Gen 7, there was something likeable about him, and it's good that he did more than just be a one-time boss (which is a problem for a lot of Gym Leaders and the like in this series).
