I almost always nickname my Pokemon, except for the Legendaries. I don't know, I've never felt right about renaming a Legendary creature. But all of my regular Pokemon get a nickname.

I suppose it's just that if I were actually training these Pokemon and tossing them out of Pokeballs, I'd feel a little strange shouting "GO! BULBASAUR!" as though Bulbasaur was its name. It'd be like someone tossing me out of a ball and shouting "GO! HUMAN!" Bulbasaur is the Pokemon's species, not its personal name. In my opinion.

oh, yeah i agree. i don't think i've ever named a legendary, it feels weird. they're huge god monsters, they're too mighty for pathetic human names!

I always nickname my Pokémon after their Japanese names. Of course, it all depends on what I'm going to evolve them to.

If I have a Bulbasaur, that I want to be an Ivysaur and not a Venusaur, I'm going to name it Fushigiso instead of Fushigibana.

I started a new Crystal file yesterday, and here are the stupid nicknames:

Feraligatr - Toto

Houndoom - Doggy

Pupitar - Bagel

Jumpluff - Pip

Arbok - Snakey

Parascect - Secret

Feel free to laugh.

homer - slowbro, lol nice, fits perfectly

If I do nickname, I make sure I nickname all 6 pokemon I have with me, and its all based off of a theme.

Some themes I've done:

Star Wars- that's right, I nicknamed all of my Pokemon after Jedi or Sith. I compared the Pokemon's color to the color of a lightsaber blade, which is how I nicknamed. (e.g. my Gyarados was Obi Wan).

Green Day- I once named all of my Pokemon after Green Day songs. I used Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, American Idiot, etc.

Action Movie Stars- My current team is nicknamed with the last names of actors who appear frequently in action movies. Examples are Chan, Li, and Cruise.

I have a Ralts that I am going to transfer to Platinum
(once I get it) and I named it AvantGarde.
I got the idea from the Gardevoir I have.
Hence the "Garde" in Gardevoir.
I thought the Pokeman had a
"experimental" fashion.

Spoiler:

Other Pokemon I nicknamed:

Ralts - Waltz (as in the dance)
Miltank - BigMac ( "McDonalds" "Big Mac")
Infernape - Monchichi (Monchhichis)
Gallade - Gallium (Gallium)
Honchkrow - Scarlet (From "Gone With The Wind", as a refference to the main character)
Drowzwee - Dreamt (The only English word that ends in "-mt")

I've actually nicknamed my whole Saphire team this time around.

Kicky the Blaziken
Ovechkin the Sableye
Lemieux the Walrien (yes I like hockey)
Pointy the Gardevoir
Boop the Raichu
Parn the Flygon

I've found that I like them a lot more then when I didn't nickname my team in Ruby and Emerald.

Ditto - Smoosh
Ralts (Going to evolve into Gallade) - Choppy
Dialga - Bitey
Ralts (Going to evolve into Gardevoir once I get one) - Charmy
Wurmple - Squishy
Spoink - Spork
Palkia (If I ever get one) - Stompy
Darkrai - Zoomy

And so on in an utterly stupid fashion.

I gave you that Ralts! Give me some credit!

Gardevoir: Libra
Umbreon: Midnus
Luxray: Simba
Manaphy: Murphy
Crobat: Vampirus
Weavile: Hunter
Giratina: Shadow
Azelf: Charles
Uxie: Ein
Unowns: A, B, C, D, E, and continues on like that.
Ralts: Libra
Swablu: Sierra
... That's a few, but not all of them.

I'll just say my team:

Togekiss: Neutral
Gengar: Taunter (Would be Marble, but it was obtained from a trade. I'll be ev training a new one shortly)
T-tar: Slayer
Aggron: Granite
Shuckle: SHUCKLE (=p)
Snorlax: Wurmple

I like to nickname my pokemon a four letter word and then MASTER. Always in all caps.

Some examples:
Totodile = BITEMASTER
Geodude = ROCKMASTER
Pidgey = WINGMASTER
Butterfree = SUCKMASTER

That for me would depend on what pokemon it was. If my pokemon were a fire type I would name it something in that area if you know what I mean (example: Charizard would be named Blaze).
