Alright. Here's the deal. I was on the net going through a few of the forums that I frequent, when I came across a topic about the issues with the Pokemon Anime. Well, I look in it and find a few amusing, yet true posts. But then there's one post that really bugs me. I've seen this before, and I'm sure some of you have seen it too.

It's the post where the overly zealous fanboy (for lack of a better term) says people that complain about Pokemon aren't true Pokemon fans.

Thing is, I love Pokemon and I complain about it ALL the time. As I'm sure alot of people do. That makes me not a true Pokemon fan, how? What gets me is most people that have issues mention those issues because they want to make Pokemon better by getting those changed. So how are we not being true Pokemon fans by mentioning these issues? Wouldn't it be way worse just to leave them be and not say anything at all? I don't know. I'm sort of at a loss here. I didn't even know how to respond to that person.

Has anyone here ever encountered that type of person?

Alot of ignorant people in my school say "Pokemon is for little kids" I hear that all the time. And it's just as annoying trying to convince them, because they won't be mature.(haha Irony in pokemon shows intended for children) I battle, and I assure you, the majority, if not all the battlers in PC are in high school or above. To put it simply, pokemon is another RPG game, like Final Fantasy or Tactics Ogre. I don't have time to watch the TV show anymore, after it left KidsWB, but I still think and know that pokemon is cool, and haters can just get lost. :D

That's not the problem. Maybe I should rephrase.

The problem is that there are a few people that will say you're not a true Pokemon fan, or something along those lines, just because you complain about the issues with the Anime or Games.

That's what I'm wondering, if you've encountered people like that.

If you're willing to oppose those who say you're not, and you know you are, why should you care what they think? It's kind of a hard question to answer...

I don't see too many people who actually say that.

a true fan doesnt have to like EVERYTHING about something
    ^(general statement)

there is no such thing as a "true" fan in my book. there are just different levels of dedication, (along with the ocasional "over zeolous fanboy/girl here and there) but what can you do? they are EVERYWHERE! O_O *gets chased by crowd of angry fanboys*

nothing is perfect, everything has flaws so complaining about it doesn't make u less of a fan....

I haven't met any person that would say that kind of thing on any forum. (But then again, I don't go to many other forums.) But if you think about it, you can kind of understand what it is that they are talking about. They are the blind people who think that the true fans are those that have been loyal from the start and find nothing wrong with the franchise.

But the truth is that nothing is perfect. And those Pokemon fans who have complaints about something involving either the games, the anime, the manga, or the card game love it so much that they want to change it and make it better. They know that it's not perfect, and they come together with other fans who also find it to be slightly imperfect, and let their voices be heard.

So no, I don't think that just because you complain about something doesn't make you a true fan. It just means that you're mature enough to see that it's not perfect as was originally thought, and you took the time to think up ways that could make it better.

    bad thinking

This mindset is dangerous at best. It looks like the fallacy of the excluded middle.

They're using a fallacious argument. The flaw is essentially: "You're either with us (you like Pokemon and find nothing wrong with it) or you're against us (you have something against Pokemon)!"

There is no 'middle' ground, the middle ground being, you like Pokemon but dislike some things.

They're a cult of Pokemon fans. Not just fans of Pokemon. If I were you, move to a different community.

A true fan knows the spirit of the franchise and would definitely speak up at the first sight of declining standards. He who blindly accepts anything with the appropriate franchise tag on it, regardless of quality, is not a true fan; just a true fool.

Okay, don't know why I phrased it like a freakin' philosophy quote, but those are my feelings on the subject. Label worship isn't true fandom as far as my opinion is concerned. D= I'm a fan of Bleach, but that doesn't mean I'm liking the stupid Bounto filler arc, and in a similar vein: I don't know a single Yu-gi-oh! fan who wouldn't lovingly make fun of the blatant plot holes in the anime. If you don't care about the quality of the franchise at all (blindly accepting everything as perfection) then you aren't really appreciating it either, and if you aren't appreciating it you aren't a fan. =P

See, I portrait a true fan of pokemon as one who pays attention to the series in general. Now when someone complains, they obviously don't like something about it. And what does that mean they've been doing to the series? That's right. People have been known to rant about a topic because of how obscene or cliched it is. Maybe there's a certain pokemon they think is a waste of numeric value. Or maybe they don't like a certain character? *coughmistycough* Or maybe they just want team rocket to die and stay dead. There's many reasons why people would complain about the Pokemon series. and 90% of the time they have a legit excuse AND a suggestion or three. So I wouldn't say it's wrng for a Pokemon fan to complain. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that it might even be encouraged. if you don't like it, tell somebody. You just never know who might be listening ;)

that is totally true. Sometimes I complain about the show one is with Team rocket doing the same thing over and over again

When you see a sports fanatic complaining adamantly about a call by a referee or otherwise in a game, do you say s/he's not really a sports fan because s/he is complaining? Of course not! Usually, you say the person is even more of a dedicated fan! :P

    I believe the sentiment holds for fandoms like Pokémon. No one says you have to accept everything and love everything about something to be a fan. On the contrary, I think that complaining about things (especially trivial!) might even show that one is more of a fan. I mean, if you don't care enough to bring up anything you don't like very much about something, then you probably don't have much of an interest. And if you put the effort into nitpicking something, then obviously you care for or take an interest in it. xD;

I think that post came out a little more negative than intended, but I do mean that complaining is in the most positive sense. I whine about stupid things in fandom all the time, especially in my main fandoms, and I truly don't think that makes me any less of a fan.

I've never seen that before o.O Not even on forums like Serebii

I like complaining. I complain whether I like something or hate something. Being a true fan means you can admit the flaws and by admitting the flaws the company can then improve their product (well...supposedly)

I agree with most of you guys, just complaining about something dosn't make you less of a fan. Nothing is perfect, games arnt perfect, glitches are proof of this, no matter how hard you try, glitches cant be avoided, anyhow, where would be the fun withought glitches? Or plot holes, I love Kingdom Hearts, but I willingly point out the big plot hole of heartless giveing out hearts when they die, blatent enough? and Naruto eyesyndrome (Naruto always has spazy eyes) But that doesnt make me less of a fan of Naruto, ot KH does it? And Pokemon, Missingo? E4 glitch, Pokemon can't die (In the anime and game anyway) yet there is a pokemon tower (Graveyard for pokemon?) All these things are poblems that we all point out.
    But we are all fans.
True fans are thoese whom appriciate the fanchise, but can still point out problems.

And to actually answer the question, I don't think I have ever come across someone like this. But I may of, just not noticed it lol :)

EDIT: Oh, I know why heartless give out hearts now. Heartless collect hearts... the hearts arn't their own!! It all makes sense now!

Oh yeah and sorry for going so offtopic in this reply....

my friend never ever played a single pokemon..ever and he calls me a kid for playing but most highschoolers play it

That is offtopic... stay on topic please :) The question was, do you see people that say 'If you complain about Pokemon then you arn't a real Pokemon fan'

P.S I wasn't meaning to Minimod... but it sorta is a minimodding paragrph... Ooops..

I've never seen this happen before, but I can say I agree with your opinion. I complain a lot too, but it doesn't make me any less of a fan. :x
