Serious Nursing homes and the pandemic

    From the start of COVID, issues with neglect, lack of equipment, poor management and even staff abandoning has been brought to the light. In Canada, many seniors face these issues in homes where they are supposed to be looked after. It's not necessarily the staffs or even the homes fault, many provinces cut healthcare, reducing staff in hospitals and homes. In one home here, there's only one worker per 33 residents at night.

    However, there are plenty of times that homes put money before lives and care, and it's resulted in tragedy. Most COVID deaths and breakouts here were in nursing homes.

    So I'm wondering, in terms of patient care, how would you rate your country? Is it the same? Do you believe that places like nursing homes, care homes, hospitals and prisons should only be managed by the government?

    The US has a crappy healthcare system in general and has done a poor job at handling the pandemic, so it's likely not among one of the better ones for this sort of thing by extension.

    I remember hearing months ago about something along the lines of the governor here (NJ) doing something that may have led to a lot of covid related deaths in nursing homes, but I wasn't really following it, and it's not come up again in a long time.

    @Nah, it was this:

    Happened down the street from me. All due to the pandemic. Needless to say my elderly grandmother-in-law is staying with my fiancé and I for as long as possible.

    That place was a shithole before this whole scandal though. Been there a few times visiting family and I used to get high with a couple of the kids that worked in the kitchen. Total nightmare.

    I know here in Michigan it was a living hell and people were extremely upset that seniors who survived were going right back to the places where it was bad instead of somewhere else for the time being.

    The only issue with that is unless you have family they can go to its hard to move them around and have them live in a different location for a time. They may not understand what is going on or why they were put here and it will upset them. They want to be where they are most comfortable.

    That can also be true, but I'd rather they be in a better place :( I really hope these issues get people here to see that it's unacceptable.
