Obama has plans of lenghtening school hours...

One's IQ is generally constant throughout the entirety of their life. It's a measure of one's cognitive speed, not a measure of how much knowledge they possess. A gifted five-year-old just starting school can have the same IQ as an Ivy League professor, even if they don't hold the same level of knowledge.
Right. Because there are plenty of kindergarteners outsmarting professors.

Oh yay, I'll get home at 8:30 now IF it passes. >.<

The point of his post was not to say what you are claiming. It was to say that they learn new concepts and subjects at about the same rate as college professors. The I.Q can still be altered quite a few points, although the debate of nature vs. nurture is still going on.

Luck already said it, but since you don't seem to be grasping the concept verbally, I made this nice picture for you.
Spoiler:

Note that the 2 year old with the 140 IQ has less knowledge than the 60 year old with 80 IQ. This picture assumes that higher IQ actually does equate to higher learning capacity, which I don't really buy (IQ is a fundamentally flawed measurement).

oookaaay...

You should refer to twocows' post for a visual explanation of what IQ really means.

Getting past that, the point of my original post wasn't me boasting about my IQ, but rather how (in my experience) American schools are flawed because schools will only hire really good teachers for the students with higher aptitude test results, leaving the more average students with inept teachers that are only expected to teach the bare minimum for passing the standardized tests. >_>

No way in hell am I spending an extra minute in school, eight damn hours is enough. I mean 40 hours a week of my time is down the drain. The hours aren't the problem, one of my seventh grade teachers was teaching third graders the same stuff she was teaching us... Gaaaah! I

Edit:
Oh, but it won't pass, we can barely afford to pay everything that we have now. So.. we won't be able to pay them for all the extra hours and days.

Also, academics shouldn't be the be-all-and-end-all of schooling.

^This, and...

I think they need to address the actual system before they adjust the length of the teaching.

^This.

I personally see this as coming from Obama's own lack of confidence. He always seems to have a need to make America look better for the sake of places like Europe and Asia and whatnot. Too bad that generally always means bad news for us...

I should feel relieved that this won't affect me, but the idea of being forced (by my own government, no less!) to send my hypothetical children to school for that long when I know damn good and well that the education won't be anymore affective than it has been in the past really irks me.

How is having more education bad news? Even if you've got a hypothetical situation where all your teachers are mediocre or worse, you're still learning a little about the subject.

You're assuming all educational facilities in the US are bad. That's the opposite of the truth. Most schools have a fine teaching staff that is genuinely interested in helping their students learn. Our primary educational system is already effective, just not as effective as some out there (if it were ineffective as the rule, colleges would have no attendees). The way I see it, lengthening the school day can only help.

Wow. You guys made wonderful points. I also think this shouldn't happen. Even though I finished school 10 years ago, I don't think it will be fair that they lengthen the school hours. What would happen to the sports and clubs that is held after school? Or band practice? This isn't good. They will be cut. I really hope this doesn't pass. I think it is because the teachers want more money! That is what it is. Money!

I think they need to work on the system itself than lengthen school hours. There are teachers out there that don't know how to teach. I was lucky that I had great teachers when I was at school. But times has changed. Most of them can't do their job and they are still here! And students are failing. Well it also the parents fault too not just the teachers. But anyway how will this work?! I don't see it working too well. :/ Well shall see though.

All I can say is, it's a good thing I don't live in the US, unless Canada starts following America's lead... which it already has. D:

Doesn't apply to me since I'm in my senior year =)
but I think it's a good idea since this cuts down kids running the streets (in my opinion)

If I can get my shecdule (How the hell do you spell it??) changed, I guesss longer days wont be ....THAT bad...but really, Obama is a little bahind in the times, if you know what I mean.

To be frank I don't have much problems with this. I used to have classes up to 4 PM (5 on some days due to Math) back in the Philippines.

But then again the question is, will this generation of apathetic kids actually care? It's just that people aren't motivated to study hard plus meh I would add socio-economic background there too. =/

good less hours the little kids have throwing rocks at my house

more school good, parents don't watch many kids any way.

Noooooo forget it Obama.D:
We already have like tons of homework when we come from school why raise more hours? T_T I don't like this idea...
The problem is, half the kids don't do the homework.

I'm positive for this action, our generation of children and teens need as long as they can at school so that the future can look bright. The thing is though, more school equals more rebellion.

Despite your eternal pessimism in other threads, I think you've made a rather valid point in this one...

keeping kids in school longer -> less unsupervised time for the kids -> less behavioral problems and better study habits.

Again, this is all based on generalities, and it actually ends up being unfair to the kids that can actually handle being unsupervised without causing trouble. >_>

Well, all the clubs and activities would be pushed back. It's not like they have a limited amount of time after school to do them. On top of that, clubs and practice can be put before school hours too.

Thankfully, I live in Britain so this won't have any effect on me. Good luck to allvthe American students!
