Some stuff in baseball has been pretty surprising.

Trains and literally stopping the game have a singsong would be two of them.

It would appear by the trains comment that you're watching the Houston Astros play in Minute Maid Park or whoever has the naming rights now.

I have no idea the origins of singing during the 7th inning stretch, but I think it's a fun tradition. Plus, they cut off drink sales in stadiums at that time so people have time to "sober up" before leaving the game.

And umpires getting hit in the face is not uncommon. That's why they wear the cage masks.

'tis a silly game, baseball. But I do like it. Most of the time. Except when the Yankees are winning.

I'm reading a fanfic where Fullmetal Alchemist gets turned into a fantasy world, with magic instead of alchemy

There's also the standard "Dragon captures princess" thing going on

"Are you sure this is the right staircase?"

"I'm insulted by your lack of faith, little brother."

"Well, this is the eighteenth flight of stairs we've tried, you know. I hate to cast aspersions on your wizardly intuition, but I AM wearing approximately my own weight in metal plates…"

"Don't be a baby."

"A ba- I'm a Knight of the realm!"

"Well then, don't be a chivalrous baby."

Oh, and Roy is a Dragon

I was actually watching Pirates/Tigers last night [because it was on TV and not a meh stream] but yeah but the train was certainly at Houston. Quirky little ground.

Umpire had to retire from the game and there was something like a 20 minute break between pitches. I guess the guard is better at taking straight pitches and not having them change trajectory after hitting the catcher's glove.

Owning a stadium and owning naming rights to a stadium are rather different.

Super interesting.

Wait, wait, wait...Minute Maid actually has enough money to own a field of any sort? Really?

...Really?

Stadium or otherwise, names leave quite the impression- you're more likely to think of them than you are what they're used for...or, at least, in the mind of a sports-savvy individual, it'd be side-by-side. Can't be cheap, I'd imagine.

Naming rights for advertising, like Lap said. Plus, Minute Maid is a Coke product, iirc.

These contracts are typically megabucks, as well. For instance, on that billion dollar football stadium built in Dallas a couple years ago, AT&T pays between $17 million and $19 million per year to have their name plastered on the stadium. Many American sports fans just refer to the stadium as Jerry's World, though, after the owner of the team, Jerry Jones.

It's most likely that the city of Houston or some regionally based stadium authority owns Minute Maid Park. A lot of newer stadiums are operated this way, as stadiums are expensive as hell to actually own and teams would rather lease than own the facilities.

Personally, I don't even think of the brand names since naming rights are so common in the sports world these days. Except in cases where a stadium had a non-corporate name prior. Like "Mall of America Field at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome". Up until 2009, it was just known as the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Also is there really an anime called Miracle High.

Personally I hadn't heard of the brand as they don't release any products here. Looked them up and they have been a part of the coca-cola company since 1960 and sell products in more than 25 nations. They almost certainly have enough money to build large sporting venues.

Mikagura School Suite - It's another school club battle series. I think it's based on a vocaloid song or something along those lines.

Sites and sources incorrectly say a vocaloid, but it's based off of a popular Nico Nico Douga medley (Kumikyoku, as the name implies. No vocals, but it's not vocaloid), a culmination of popular culture at the time in anime and general memetic things- it's a pretty important piece of internet for me as it got me into quite a bit- I don't think I'd be where I am without it.

...Which is why I'm completely baffled by this show, I have no idea what it has to do with that, or if they're even related. I watched the first episode and can't see any clear connection. Might give it one more.

Huh, I guess that makes a lot of sense, especially considering Minute Maid is owned by Coke. Though I do find it interesting that brand names are becoming less common. After all, I grew up in a world where we'd see...I dunno...Pepsi Stadium and...well, examples in the area aren't my forte, not being much of a sports guy myself, but they were rather commonplace so it's pretty surprising.

...Now that I think about it I haven't watched any anime in quite some time.

Stadium naming rights being sold to large corporations has pretty much become the norm over here, especially with new builds. Financial growth of the Premier League has been pretty mental recently and that is just another reason why.

Not the biggest reason of course.

403. Gotta love that sweet, sweet TV money. TV deal money has caused insane financial growth in American leagues, too. Heck, even the MLS has a pretty sweet TV deal. I think their deal has topped $100 million USD, which is a lot considering where they were even 5 years ago. The NBA is set to top $2 billion just in national broadcast contracts, not to mention local contracts.

ESPN paid $1.9 billion last year for the rights to broadcast just Monday Night Football games.

And don't even get me started on how lucrative conference sports networks have been for universities. The Big Ten Network brought in $27 million for each full-member school for 2013-14 and is expected to bring in ~$45 million a year within 4 years, that's on top of whatever ESPN will pay them for TV rights for football alone, on a deal that currently brings in ~$20 million per year per school that expires in 2017. Granted, the bulk of that money goes to pay for non-revenue sports at each school like track and volleyball, but it's still cash money that helps the schools increase their recreational and athletic offerings to students. Well, at most of the member schools, anyway.

Most recent growth has pretty much all been down to domestic tv rights. Pretty crazy to think about what middle eastern and American deals will do in the coming years. Can see why my club are so desperate to get back there, not a whole lot of this money trickles down into the football league.

I wonder how much American sports are benefiting from international tv deals. We get 1 - 3 games per day from all of your big 3 sports.
