Metal as a genre is vast, I presume you know that and are just joking around.

Although a lot of metal is trash and I expect that is what Orph is listening to.

Then I'll say the more mainstream, upfront stuff. That's where the angst is, mostly.

Angsty music in general I don't like, though, it's a lot of why I can't get into the more popular parts of various genres which, really, prevents me from getting into them at all, sadly. And there's a lot of popular angst out there, especially nowadays.

Hmmm, perhaps you are thinking about the recent[ish] stuff like Slipknot, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, Bullet for my Valentine and other stuff which are basically things taken from genres like death metal and made to appeal to the masses. By masses I mean masses of teenagers.

Most forms of metal are actually really theatric and not to be taken super seriously, even the ones that dress up like demons and sing about murder. As I've said though metal is a massively broad term, hell even the biggest pop band ever had what a lot consider a metal track.



I should note that Helter Skelter was released in 1968 and metal was hardly a thing at that point.

Hm...yeah. Yeah, that makes sense.

I guess it would be more appropriate for me to just say that I don't like angst, not a specific genre. Every genre has some amount of shit, after all.

And it seems I haven't really had the time to explore Metal which, considering my preconceptions, makes a lot of sense. Though I've never really minded Metal in terms of its musical structure. I think, when it's not blaring "their voice is so high/low pitched I can't tell one singer from another" (which is mostly Death Metal and not so much others, as far as I'm aware), it can hold a melody very well, which is why it's often used to cover songs from other genres...

...I'm guessing. But the point is, it was pretty narrow-minded of me to say that in the first place.

Vocal style in metal varies, even if the songs aren't particularly teen-angst ridden growl/scream vocals are certainly not for everyone. There are cases where I'm perfectly fine with them, although I'll admit black and death metal are not forms of metal I've really bothered with.

The more standard metal vocal will be gruff/rasping but they are most certainly audible words in coherent verses. As for sounding alike, I think all genres are a bit like that if you don't actually listen to bands.

I find the conversation from when I left amusing. :v And on that note I was just joking about what I was listening to at the time being "Angry screaming metal." :P Most of the music I listen to doesn't have much or any screaming in it.
