Overworld sound effects

Got inspired to make this topic after watching this video.

If one hasn't seen it yet, the video showcases a sidequest where the protagonist has to collect Pyukumuku and throw them back in the water, but it also reveals another new thing with Sun & Moon - and that is the overworld now having more realistic sound effects.

Sound effects in the linked video include waves crashing onto the beach, and the protagonist's footsteps which change sound based on terrain, as shown by him running on both the sand and grass areas. While 6th Gen did have some sound effects in the overworld (such as when running through grass) they weren't very noticeable.

That said, what do you think of the overworld now having actual sound effects? Do you like the amount of realism it adds to the game?

I love it! It really makes the games more enjoyable, immersive and realistic! It helps you feel the actual place you're at, which is amazing. I just hope it doens't get too annoying, but I don't think that'll be the case. I'm really loving the amount of effort GF is putting to make Sun and Moon one of the best Pokémon games ever.

I agree with Kingdenas, when I watched the video I was instantly reacting to not hearing Pyukumuku's adorable cry a lot but the sound effects. I was like "OMG the waves are crashing and I can hear actual footsteps in Pokemon now!" and it was the most amazing thing ever since maybe, the addition of seasons and 3D rendering.

I do love how Game Freak are now putting in subtle details like this, because it brings a fresh new layer of realism to Pokemon. It makes me now feel like I'm in the game, and it makes me feel proud of Game Freak for the effort they're putting in.

I really love it when they add ambient sound to games, it adds to the realism. I hope Seasons returns because they could utilise these sounds to work well with the different seasonal environments.

That reminds me, in 5th Gen the music in some locations had different instruments and sound effects based on the season (an example is chimes in the winter version). Since 6th Gen removed seasons (which I was sad about) I feel like it's unlikely to come back given Alola's climate but oh well, we can dream.

I absolutely love the overall depth of this game that keeps getting released to us in snipits, almost like they're little Easter eggs. Yeah sure the focus of that video was mainly to reveal a quest but it also showed us in the background the insane amount of attention to overall detail this game is presenting, it's almost going as far as to raise my expectations for this game even further. For example... If they're putting so much work into environmental details, than it feels possibly more likely that those features may enhance the possible inclusion of Day/Night and maybe even Seasons(?). I mean what better way to truly show off all that hard work and attention to detail other than pushing it to its full potential in a constantly changing environment. Maybe the overworld sounds could even change... It's totally a possibility. :)

Am I missing something here? Hasn't this been a thing for a while now? Not that I'm complaining--sound design is a very crucial factor in regards to overall game immersion--but I specifically remember even as far back as HGSS including things such as sound effects when you were close to water or a fountain, and I'm pretty sure even RSE included a different footstep sound effect for when you were walking on sand. Maybe it's because I play with headphones on (because headphones always make music sound better for me) but I always thought the sound effects in Pokémon games were really noticeable (on an appropriate level) in the past. Like, of course I'm glad these ambient sounds are back but they kind of have to be back because they've been in the games for a while now.

It's just like HG/SS, they added ambient sounds too... It's going to be so good to just take a relaxing stroll on the beach at which ever time tickles your fancy and hear the waves crash...
