I played up to the fifth gym's town before giving up, but I think that's enough to offer my impressions. First, good things:

+ I liked the added mechanics, as they gave me incentives to fight wild Pokemon or harvest crops when I otherwise wouldn't.
+ The regional forms original to this game felt like they fit with the others.
+ no hard level caps

However, personally I found the cons outweighed the pros.

- The game actively wastes my time with roadblocks upon roadblocks. I'll provide an example for anyone who wants to see it.

Spoiler: Warning: Early-midgame spoilers therein

The desert route's latter half is filled with navigational puzzles, making the switch puzzle tedious since the switches are too far apart to see which blocks they move. But pressing all the switches doesn't open the exit; instead it opens a cave housing a woman who lost her four Smeargles and you can't proceed without finding them. They're strewn about the route, and locating one sends you back to the cave every time. The provided escape ropes mitigate this somewhat, but not as much as not sending me back constantly would have. However, recovering all four still doesn't unlock the exit; the woman suddenly remembers she has five Smeargles, and now you have to find the fifth one as well. If that's the game's idea of a joke, I didn't laugh. But even that rigmarole is straightforward compared to what happens in the next town. The puzzles there must be nested five to six layers deep.

- Everything about the plot rubs me the wrong way. I resent the cynical, edgy storylines all of these fan games seem to have, and this one is no exception. I outright welcomed story-free dungeons since those let me play the game rather than just watch people talk.
- I abhor being forced into multiple unwinnable boss fights. I get that they're supposed to show off the bad guys as a serious threat, but here it just feels like the game's bullying me.

With all that said, I'm glad Stochastic made their dream game and found an audience that enjoys it, but Empyrean just doesn't appeal to me.

I'm running this game on Mac on Wine Crossover and its very strange the game honestly runs perfectly, but there is no background music or battle music. The sound effects are still there but the music isn't. I have played so many fangames with even more bulk and none of them have ever given me this issue. If someone experienced a similar problem on Mac please let me know what you did to resolve. Thanks.
