  • Is there an easier way of adjusting EVs? I know there's the berries, but only getting two per tree and having to remember where the trees are is kinda rough.

Pokémon GS Chronicles - [Build 2.7.3 Released 05/12/2024]

    About the Project

Hello everyone, I'm Overlord Kaktus/Gold/Ruki Studios. Probably you remember me for other projects like Pokémon Ragnarök (Or maybe not hahaha). I'm a Spanish-speaker romhacker and a former GBC romhacker (from 2010 to May 2014). This time I'll show to you guys an old project that I decided to restart, and I really hopw this project would be finished.

This project was started around late 2010. At that moment the project was only an "idea" that was stopped in 2015, but now it was redone from scratch.

The project is highly inspirated in the Chaos Rush's hack "Pokemon Dark Violet". in other words, this hack is also a "reboot" (Or try to be) of Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal, making many of the events from scratch and showing a new storyline keeping the escence of the original story, with a heavy inspiration of the original HGSS remakes and some concepts seen only in Polished Crystal.

Keep in your mind, this isn't a remake like Liquid Crystal, CrystalDust or ShinyGold. This intends to be a reboot from Pokemon Gold and Silver, using some ideas from Pokémon Crystal and HGSS, making a unique and unseen story of Johto.

    Storyline

I have no idea how to describe the main plot and storyline since many events are essentialy the same form HGSS/GSC, so we can at least assue the plot may remain the same (Tbh is not the same, but at least you may get a surprise by playing the game.

    What is New?

Proudly powered by the Complete Fire Red Upgrade
    • A renewed storyline, keeping the escence of the original games.
    • New events never seen before in any GSC remake.
    • Maps based off HGSS ones.
    • Introducing the Mega Evolution mechanics in the main storyline + Z Moves during the Kanto Post game (Maybe Dynamax/Gigamax, idk).
    • RZE tile system.
    • Day and Night system and day/time-based events.
    • Wild Pokémon switching depending on the time.
    • Original soundtrack ripped from HGSS (Initially used GogojjTech's low quality music, but I decided to rip them by myself with a way better quality).
    • Phisycal/Special split moves.
    • New Regional Pokedex including 494 Pokémon fron first 4 gens + Sylveon.
    • Introducing the PokéRides, Items that replace the outdated HM mechanics.
    • All new Gen 4-8 Moves included, a few custom moves are included.
    • Type chart updated.
    • New puzzles for some areas.
    • Plenty of updated graphics (like Battle backgrounds, bag, Trainer card, almost everything.)
    • Most trainers use different rosters from original HGSS/GSC to match new Pokedex
    • New locations in Johto and Kanto.
    • Updated battle mechanics to match gen 8
    • New locations for some Pokémon.
    • IN-battle trainer messages.
    • An almost working PokéGear.
    • Exp. Share and exp. Gain identical to Gen 8 (Item is disabled by default, easy to enable)
    • Mechanics, items and more almost updated to match Gen 8.
    • Daily Wondertrade with in-game trainers.
    • Move tutors on every PC.
    • And even more...

    Known Bugs

    • Fast forward speed is kinda laggy because of High quality music mixer using plenty of memory to run. (But we got high quality music)
    • Pokemart Graphics are broken due to new RZE tileset system.
    • Health bar graphics and exp. bar may not show correct information. However exp gain and health works as intended
    • Dexnav may not work in mGBA and real hardware. it is pending to be confimed.

    F.A.Q.

    1. Whatever happened to your old hackroms? (Ragnarök)
I have no more ideas and inspiration to continue that hackrom. It's not cancelled at all, but I have no plans to continue with it right now.

    2. Is this hack a remake of GSC like ShinyGold, Liquid Crystal or GoldenSun?
Heck no! This hack is a reboot, the same objetive but different storyline and scripts. The story is a mashup of the concepts of Pokemon Gold, Crystal, Heart Gold and personal concepts.

    3. Will this hackrom have more than one rival (Silver)?
Yes, I can only confirm another rival now, your gender counterpart is another rival.

    4. Why did you choose this style for the female player?
It's based on this old artwork (I have no idea at this time who the artist is. The artwork was taken from a fake leak from HGSS around 2009) https://i.imgur.com/3VC01Ep.jpg

    5. Do you have plans to put Kanto and more regions?
Kanto is confirmed. A Johto story without Kanto is incomplete, lol, and nope, I have no plans to put more regions, only Johto and Kanto

    Special Thanks

    • Skeli: How could I forget the creator of the amazing CFRU? In addition to the amazing job made for the engine, I truly appreciate also the feedback Skeli provided to me about the testing build (So sad it was an early testing build leaked with several bugs)
    • Anonyboy: A really good guy who collaborated years ago with some tile animations.
    • Compumax: He made the outstanding intro cutscene that you see when boot up the game.
    • ThamTvMaster: The main beta tester and the person who reported most of the bugs not fixed yet at that time.
    • James MC, Xan, Stonyterrace and BlackStarRegime: Main beta testers of Beta 2.5
    • Soupercell For sharing part of the code used for the amazing Radical Red.
    • All members of my Discord server for testing beta 2.5

Still new in here and playing this for 3 times already, pretty amazing and honestly thank you for this amazing hack
, hope someday the kanto part will be finished.

Once again thank you and i hope you don't forget to stay healthy and safe

  • Does anyone know if there's a way to change a Pokemon's nature? I got the Dratini from the Dragon's Den, but I wanted it to be Adamant instead of Jolly.

  • So, I'll totally upfront:

Is it buggy? Yeah, hella. Could a few edits be made here and there when it comes to writing? Prolly. But is this mock-worthy?

Uh, yeah no. Unironically, this is probably one of the best Johto-styled hacks that I've had the chance to discover and experience. Even with all the bugs and dialogue hiccups, not only did ya write the game well enough to make me WANT to go to Kanto (WHICH ISN'T OFTEN), but ya also essentially gave a definitive type of Johto itself all on its own in both style and gameplay aspects. HGSS can get kinda sloggy cuz of Gen 4's engine, other hacks like Shiny Gold (variants included) were IFFY at best for one reason or another, and old Gen 2 is Gen 2.

I can say this with absolute honesty: GS: Chronicles here is the DEFINITIVE Johto for me personally, plus a lot of my friends I'd sent it to ages back. Its a game that makes me WANT to come back and give it another whirl, even in its incomplete state. You deserve a hell of a lot more credit than you're givin' yourself now to accomplish that kinda feat.

  • Seuss, I can understand if you wanna take a step back and take some time off from working on the hack. But thinking you're not good enough to keep working on it? I hate sounding so negative with this, but that's a stupid way to think.

    A million thanks to everyone!!!!
Well. I'm not so good at this kind of stuff. Okay. So… I guess I've to start with something…

The GS Chronicles journey started around Christmas 2014 when I was sick of starting projects that died after a few months of development. I thought with something so simple like "another remake of Heart Gold" would be a simple task. How wrong I was.

A kind of stable release for my romhack took almost 5 years to complete. I say kind of because since this romhack has been released it has been infested with bugs, glitches and oddities.

As you can see it's been six months with no updates or news about next release. Guess what? I've not worked on the game since that day. Reasons? A lot of stuff has happened to me. Some of them good, some of them bad. And some others horrible. In addition to all that stuff I've lost any motivation to continue with this project. A big part of this is also due to the hack being buggy no matter what I do and how big is my effort. Having a romhack that is non enjoyable, and several people mock about bugs, glitches, and grammar typos makes me feel like I'm not good enough at this.

I would be lying if I say I haven't enjoyed developing this hack. It's been a very nice experience working with several people who helped me developing the game, taking care of my discord server and beta testing. For all of you, A million thanks to you!

With this being said I can finish it with a Happy holidays to everyone. The development of the game will not continue anytime soon, and I don't think I will ever finish it. It's a big disappointment, I know. Even I am disappointed of myself. There are several things I wish I could have done with the project, but I guess everything I planned will never happen. How sad, but it is what it is. I hope everyone enjoy the game as it is, with bugs and grammar mistakes included.

    It's okay, Happy Holidays 🤗

Well, this rom hack is for me not only a nearly finished game (and I say nearly only because of the lack of certain TMs and items), it's also the ultimate way to replay Johto nowadays. I could enjoy a great game all the way from the beginning to the Johto champion, and that's what matters for me. I don't care about post-game, I just wanted to experience an enhanced, more updated, and more challenging version of Johto that doesn't really need Kanto to stand out, and GS Chronicles delivered that greatly. If I want to go to Kanto, I can play Radical Red or something else. I think the work in GS Chronicles went into where it matters the most: making Johto great.

So thank you for this game. We understand if you don't want to continue working on it for any reason. But don't feel bad for what you've done at all, you've done a great work.

By the way. Since GS Chronicles has stopped development, is it ok if I post the Gameshark codes list I've created so that players have a way to obtain the missing TMs and other interesting items not available in the current build?

Go ahead, IMO. A Google Drive document would be even better.

  • Honestly being able to beat the elite four and champion makes it complete to me. If Kanto was just going to be post game, then you really did a lot for the time you put into this project.
