"I'm so sorry..." Chromos said and pretended to really be sorry, on the verge of crying. "The professor has been gone on a mission for a little while now. He might be back soon but we're not sure of when." Then he shone up. "But there are lots of cute little pokémon to look at in the garden, why don't you go outside while I fetch the chocolate?"

"Mission?" Nabooru repeated. "Well, I suppose he IS the professor, after all; he must go on all sorts of pokemon-related missions. OH AND YES, FETCH THE CANDY AND CHOCOLATE PLEASE!" Boy, Nabooru was excited to eat actual food... then again, she was also worried that it might be pixelated.

Pretty soon Nabooru found herself in the garden, surrounded by other pokemon. She saw all sorts of pokemon, different shapes and sizes. It was pretty exciting - ever since she met her Eevee she haven't seen pokemon... like this before. It seemed so, life like.

"Maybe I should let Eevee see this... where is she?" Nabooru asked herself, searching around the garden.

Her Eevee was busy staring down a Spearow in the garden nearby. Nabooru couldn't figure out whether or not she was playing, or just... staring it down for no reason. Finally, the Spearow chirped.

"Spear?! Ow!" (Oh. My. Blastoise, what do you want?! Stop staring at me please!) the Spearow begged.

"Eevee~!" (I think your eyes are funny~!) Eevee giggled as a Dunsparce waddled nearby.

"Sparce!" (Hey! I take offense to that!) it said, clearly indicating that it doesn't have much of an eye... or two.

"Eevee~!" (You look like a muffin button~!) Eevee replied with a naive, wide smile.

"Dunsparce... Sparce!" (Yeah, well... you look like a BUTT!) Dunsparce snappily responded, not too keep on being called a so-called 'muffin button'. Then, a Deerling strutted by.

"Ling," (Nice one,) it said, rolling its eyes.

"Come on Eevee, let's go," Nabooru then said, as she walked towards Eevee and picked her up. Eevee always enjoyed rides; especially being picked up - she always thought that she was in a rocket ship... or something. The two then went back inside, awaiting their candy and chocolate.

Just as the lab assistant was about to pick up the brick with two glasses of steaming hot chocolate and a small jar with pink candies on it, another man in a lab coat entered the room, looking stressed.

"Frond, this needs to be sent to Cerulean City, immediately." He tossed a brown package, big enough to fit a pair of shoes, onto the desk between them.

Chromos wrinkled his nose. "What's that got to do with me?"

The other man smiled snobbily. "You've been here the shortest; you've got to take care of the most boring tasks. See you!" And with that, he was gone with a flick of his long coat.

Chromos muttered angry words under his breath, but soon calmed down. He put down the brick and stared at the package for a moment. Darn it. In order to send some big package from Pallet to anywhere else, you'd have to travel to the PokéMart in Viridian City, from where the mail services by pokémon could deliver it further. Why the world worked like this, he had no idea, but it wasn't likely to change soon. He grunted. He'd have to traverse the whole route, that took hours... Or he could give it to someone else who was heading to Viridian. A creepy smile spread across his geeky face and he pushed his glasses up.

Dash-Pallet Town

*image removed**image removed**image removed**image removed**image removed**image removed*

Brought into the lab by a stereotypical scientist (who wasn't awestruck at his hair much to his surprise) and the allure of chocolate and candy, Dash looked around the lab at his own discretion. He ignored the aide's offer to go outside with Nabooru, more interested in the lab itself for some reason. After all, he would see most of the Pokemon that was in the garden at one point or another. No sense in ruining the novelty of seeing rare Pokemon in the wild after all. A wave of nostalgia overcame Dash, as the lab's design was eerily similar to that of the one in the games, especially the older ones. The lab was filled with books with titles that Dash could never pronounce and were likely filled with diagrams that made no sense, theories that involved deep thought to understand and the occasional equation that needed a supercomputer to comprehend. In other words, each book title made Dash feel increasingly stupid. This is why he was an artist.

Dash took a peek outside in the garden after he finished his brief tour around the lab, having become bored with the lab and its relative lack of bright red buttons for him to press. Dash had wondered what kind of mission the professor would go on. Mission was a curious choice of word. Didn't scientists usually lock themselves in labs and do experiments all day? And if they did go out, wasn't it to like conferences or scientific expeditions? Mission made it sound like Professor Oak was more important than just a meek old man who studied Pokemon all day. Oh well, Dash thought. Doesn't affect me that much. I guess I won't get a free Pokemon then. Dash was slightly disappointed in that. Would of been a nice bonus in addition to catching Pinkie earlier. Nabooru eventually came back in, holding her little Eevee.

"Nice Pokemon there. She…or he….is cute!," Dash said with a smile. "We better check up on the lab assistant man. I'm craving some sugar right about now." Dash half lied. He didn't really crave anything. The entire time he had been in the game, he never felt hungry, tired or even that thirsty. Still, the taste of some food would be nice. And it may delay the onset of hunger till later. Maybe when he got to Viridian City, he would look for some real food. Candy and chocolate never filled you up for long after all.

Dash led the way over to Chromos, the lab assistant. It was a short walk, even if it could be classified as such. Chromos was staring at a brown package with the offerings of sugary sweets resting on desk. Looks like he was about to serve Dash and Nabooru before he was given a job of some sort. Shades of early Pokemon quests creeped up in his head. Was that…the parcel the player had to deliver?

"Hey, Chromos," Dash said innocently. "Is that our stuff?" Dash asked pointing at the hot chocolate and candy. "Thanks for the food, by the way. Any way we can help out in return?"

(OOC: New heading for the posts. Looks not too bad if I do say so myself xD)

The man jumped when one of the kids suddenly stood in the doorway to the office. Had he heard anything? No he couldn't possibly have heard... well, come to think of it, the other lab assistant hadn't said a single classified thing. Why would he anyways? So all was well. Relieved, Frond Chromos smiled up.

"Ah, there you are! Sorry for taking some time, the chocolate powder didn't want to dissolve into the hot water for some while."

He returned to the big room, ushering the kids to follow him. On the tray he held lay also the brown package. He made sure that Nabooru and Dash got their share of sugary stuff before he decided to respond to Dash's inquiry.

"Yes... it so happens that this package needs imminent delivery to Viridian City's PokéMart. Alas, I'm busy with my work here. But! Maybe the two of you are going to Viridian very soon? Could you, please, take this package with you? Tell the person in the store that it is from the Oak Lab. And be careful! It's fragile. And don't EVER open it up!"

All this, he said with a wide smile, trying to look innocent.

→ route 1

He had thought that training on Route 22 would be an easy and smart thing. But it turned out that Route 22 wasn't just a patch of grass and a puddle of water like in the games. It was a road zig zagging up into the mountains, looking more like a place to hike than to casually climb up to in order to grind some pokémon. So, lazy Viking went back to Route 1 to train his tiny Charmander instead. He would tackle Route 22 later. When he felt like it.

Walking through the tall grass near Viridian, the boy half expected to see Azure come marching out from some bushes with a handful of new pokémon on her team. Then he laughed at the thought. What pokémon on Route 1 could someone possibly want on their team? Except for a Charmander perhaps... He glanced down at the orange lizard walking beside him. It looked nervous. How could someone who wielded fire have such a low self-esteem? This wasn't unusual to Rosa, though. She was used to having people around her with lower self-esteem than herself. Well, at least from what was visible on the outside. She felt strong then. And Viking worked in the same ways.

All of a sudden, actually, a Rattata jumped out in front of them and hissed at them in a sort of mouse like way.

"Hm, so wild pokémon do jump out at you in this game too," Viking commented, unimpressed. "Ragnarök."

The Charmander stepped forward, ready to battle. Or at least ready to try. Rattata dashed at blinding speed towards Ragnarök, who got struck easily and wavered.

"Scratch!" Viking commanded. Ragnarök stabilized and lunged out with its claws, hitting the Rattata with a smacking Scratch.

"No letup. Growl!" The Charmander paused before making the next attack, with gave Rattata time to Quick Attack it again. It fell over backwards this time.

"Get up! Growl!" Viking shouted. Ragnarök wasn't sure that she was really cut out for battling. But she Growled cutely at Rattata, who hesitated slightly when it was about to prepare a Tackle.

"Scratch!" Viking said. But Ragnarök took too long time to get up from the ground. Rattata's Tackle came in and would hit her... SMACK! Viking's boot hit the Rattata hard and made it fall down onto the ground, shaking its head dizzily. Ragnarök looked up with a look of not understanding.

"If you want to get stronger, you can't just give up without trying!" the white haired trainer said to her, face serious and some dreadlocks hanging down beside it.

The Rattata got up and ran away back into the tall grass. Apparently it thought the fight was too scary when a human barged in and did a Boot Kick attack on it. Viking sighed and closed his eyes for a moment, while the Charmander stood up and thought about Viking's words. She was rather silly, having a human fighting her battles for her. Then again... he wanted her to fight his battles for him. But instead, it was now the other way around. Or what was it? She shook her head; she was confusing herself! She really was thinking too mu-

"You're overthinking things."

The trainer now sat down beside her, staring up into the afternoon sky. It would be dark soon and they would have to go back to Viridian City to avoid getting caught in a dark forest.

"Pokémon aren't just data here, I've understood that much now. But they are monsters who live to fight. To get stronger. I want to win, you know."

Ragnarök stood there and listened to her trainer, who maybe was about to open up his feelings and thoughts for her. What an honor! If only Ask the Staryu was out now; he would have loved this.

"It somehow feels distant... that I'm someone other than Viking. I feel like I am Viking and that I am alive inside this world. I don't even feel an urge or need to find my way out of here... I started the game because I wanted to play it. And win it. If there are other players here, I will be the strongest. Do you understand?"

Ragnarök wanted to shake her head. Most of that she didn't understand at all. Only the part about being strongest. Of course he wanted that - who didn't? So she nodded.

"Good. Then let's get you stronger before the sun goes down." He got up again and looked around. Soon, he spotted something strange... "Is that a Purrloin? What's that doing here?"

Indeed it was a pokémon from the Unova games, walking slowly through the grass and seemingly ignoring them at the moment. Then Viking remembered the fire fighters from earlier today, talking about all the pokémon that lived on Route 1 in this game. Purrloin and Lillipup. Interesting.

"Maybe Rattata is too boring for you to fight. Let's smash a cat to pieces instead!" Viking said and got a smile on his lips now. The sun was setting soon... but he would have time!

The Charmander wasn't sure that she liked the wording of what he wanted her to do, but she would do her best.

"Use Growl... in a mean way."

Ragnarök stepped forth towards the Purrloin, who had stopped to watch them now, some meters away. The lizard Growled and made the cat shudder slightly. Then it jumped forward and gave out a Growl of its own!

"Scratch!"

The lizard countered it by jumping forward and meeting Purrloin in the air with a powerful Scratch. Well, not very powerful, but to a weak pokémon on Route 1, it was quite strong. The cat landed on the ground with a moan but then quickly shot up again with a Scratch attack as soon as the Charmander had landed on the ground again. It hit it straight on the belly, pushing i backwards in the process.

Viking took up his pokédex and checked the wild Purrloin with it from a distance. "Growl and Scratch... the same attacks as my Charmander. I see." He smiled and put the pokédex away into his pocket again. "We'll have to see if this new game can be played differently than the old ones."

Purrloin came in for a Scratch again.

"Dodge to your right!"

Ragnarök dove to the right and narrowly evaded the attack, making the Purrloin jump over her.

"Hah!" Viking said, triumphantly. The Charmander felt happy that her trainer thought she did good. She could do this! "Now, run towards it and Growl!"

She quickly got up and Growled at the Purrloin, who hesitated instead of attacking again.

"Closer... Scratch!"

Purrloin Growled now, but Ragnarök was too pumped up by fighting for its trainer, so it ignored it and Scratched the cat hard instead.

"Scratch, again!" Viking said, not planning on letting up now. Trainer's pokémon were stronger than wild ones... NPCs in the games had always said that. Now he was starting to understand why. They had a purpose, while wild pokémon were only trashing about trying to protect themselves or their territory... or just attacking bypassers for fun or in rage. Trainer's pokémon had something to fight for and that might drive them on much more than wild pokémon.

Purrloin actually didn't look very brave anymore, when the Charmander came in for one last Scratch. It hit and the cat fainted.

Ragnarök panted as it left the cat laying on the ground and turned back towards her trainer. Waiting for something. Some kind... of praise?

"Good," Viking actually said, even if he didn't even look at her. Ragnarök shone up. Good enough!

Then she suddenly remembered something. Something she had found on the ground before the battle started. She walked up to Viking and stretched out her hand. He looked at it uninterested at first, but then looked again. It was his pin in the shape of a golden star, the one he had pulled out of his headband and tossed onto the ground earlier in this route.

"You found that?" he said quietly.

Ragnarök nodded happily. Viking just took it from her and reattached it to his green headband. "There. All set. Let's go back to the pokémon center now."

" T-that's very strategic of you." Chloe replied trying to make the conversation flow as good as possible even thought inside she was kind of panicking. " Oh a rare pokemon! " she thought as she heard Prince talking about his pokemon. Then she looked at Volt and smiled. " You're kind of rare too. At least for me you always will be. " then turned her head towards Prince who just averted his head from her direction. Chloe blushed a little, even thought Prince looked at her pokemon and not at her.

" You and Smoochum make a great team then. " she said being impressed by their achievements. " Just like me and Volt." She continued patting his cheek. Even if she was walking along with a trainer she had just met, Chloe couldn't deny that it felt a bit good, if only she could find a cure for the knot she was feeling in her stomach every time she tried to speak. Just as she was getting more comfortable Prince came up with an idea that made the knot get even tighter.

" B-b-b-but I don't have any other pokemon except Volt! " she squeaked as fear took over her again. Volt on the other hand was getting more and more charged with every step they took and was looking sharp at Prince. " B-b-b-but isn't Smoochum your partner? " she finally spoke after a few minutes of silence." Maybe Prince was joking and just wanted to tease her. Yeah that's it." She said to herself trying to get a little bit calm. " No one could part with his RARE pokemon so easily. " she was thinking. However, she looked at Prince and saw that he had a serious look on his face. " He couldn't be serious...could he? "

"Ah, there you are! Sorry for taking some time, the chocolate powder didn't want to dissolve into the hot water for some while." The lab assistant said, seeming to be relieved as evidenced by the small smile. Motioning Dash and Nabooru to follow him, Dash followed without much questioned. After all, Chromos seemed to be trustworthy. He offered them candy! No evil stranger gives people candy, right? And if they did, well clearly then they are an evil scientist. An evil genius mad scientist to be more precise.

With an internal shrug of nonchalance, Dash was lead back to the big room eyeing the plate full of the good stuff. Dash tried out the candy first and was pleasantly pleased with the taste. It had just enough sweetness without overpowering his delicate tastebuds. Of course, now he had to wash everything down. Grabbing the hot chocolate, Dash gulped down most of the cup. With a yelp of pain, Dash hopped up and tried to cool down his mouth to no avail: "Ish burnt mah tonahgue." Dash's tongue looked visibly red and enflamed as if a Charmander blasted a torrent of flame directly on it. Waving his hand above it like a fan, Dash mourned the loss of his taste buds for the next few days. He ignored any more offers of candy and calmly finished his hot chocolate, which was he easy considering his mouth was seared and numb at this post.

"Yes... it so happens that this package needs imminent delivery to Viridian City's PokéMart. Alas, I'm busy with my work here. But! Maybe the two of you are going to Viridian very soon? Could you, please, take this package with you? Tell the person in the store that it is from the Oak Lab. And be careful! It's fragile. And don't EVER open it up!" Chromos said with a wide smile. It was kind of creepy. Innocence didn't really work for him. Dash was feeling slightly suspicious as Chromos was definitely trying too hard, but the task sounded easy enough. After all, Viridian City was on the way and Dash probably would of checked out the PokeMart regardless if he had to deliver the package or not. Though, Dash had the distinct urge to open the package after he left the lab. What could be so important to deliver right now? Oh, the suspicion was killing him! It was like telling a child to not press the big red button on a fancy computer, but refusing to tell him why. Though those red buttons usually blew up something. Oh no! Was the parcel a bomb?

"Yeah, I can do it," Dash volunteered. "It's on the way anyway. It's no big deal for me. I'll do it right away!" Dash said getting more excited. He had wasted enough time in the lab anyway. He felt like was being left behind at this point. Dash cleaned up after himself, picked up the parcel gently and made his way to the door. "Hey Nabooru. You should come with me! The more the merrier! Maybe we can revive your hopes for that fairly tale you were hoping for."

With that Dash left the lab and made his way to Route 1. It was time to hit the road once again.

chapter one - part final
//.this is not a pipe

Ding!

The pokeball clicked shut and stopped rocking, capturing the purple rat inside. Violet grinned. Even though she hadn't actually caught the Pokemon for herself, there was satisfaction in knowing she'd actually done it right her first time. Still smiling, she called Spoink back into its pokeball. "Good job, buddy," she whispered to the spherical machine Spoink was now contained in. Then, she walked over to the remaining pokeball on the ground and picked it up.

She was about to hold it out to Max when, out of nowhere, the old man pulled a pokeball from a pouch on his side and tossed it at the other Rattata on the ground. This time, the ball shook only once, and then: Ding! The Pokemon was captured.

"There we…are," Max concluded. He began to walk over to the ball but his son got there first, snatching it off the ground as Violet had moments earlier.

Violet blinked, unsure of what to do with the rat's pokeball in her hands. Slowly, she returned it to one of the side pouches in her bag. Had she really just wasted a pokeball on a RAT? Her face flushed, but she kept quiet, crossing her arms. Max's son handed the ball to his father. The three of them stood awkwardly for a moment, looking around the clearing. Violet felt stupid for the Rattata thing…how was she supposed to know that they already had a pokeball on them!? But whatever….she would get rid of the Pokemon as soon as she reached Viridian, and she could always purchase a new pokeball somewhere along the line. Besides, weren't trainers in the video games supposed to be able to find random items lying around the region? One of those was sure to be a pokeball…

Finally, Max spoke. "So, Wade, how…about you escort this young lady to Viridian City?" he suggested. So that was his name… Wade. Violet mouthed the word, feeling the breath run past her lips as she exhaled. It was a nice name. Simple. Something you might expect from a demi-god like Wade surely was. She liked it.

"Sure thing," Wade replied. A shiver ran up Violet's arm; he hadn't spoken in a while. Wade turned to the opposite side of the clearing than the one Violet had entered, and beckoned for her to follow with his hand, much like Max had before. Violet gave Max a tiny nod and a wave as she followed eagerly behind his son.

The walk to Viridian was uneventful. Violet was tongue-tied in the presence of someone as attractive as Wade, so she kept quiet, except for when he would attempt to make small talk somewhere along the way. He didn't ask much: how old she was, if she had any siblings, where she was from (not sure if Wade was from Pallet Town or not, Violet decided to tell him she was from the Hoenn region, hoping that the other regions still existed in this world as they had in the real games. Apparently, the rules were the same). They saw no Pokemon on their way, or at least Violet didn't see any, although she was busy watching her companion walk as inconspicuously she could.

After about twenty minutes of walking, the two of them stepped out of the forest and into the sunlight. It was bright out (well, brighter than she remembered it), and Wade pulled a pair of sunglasses from the pocket on his shirt, sliding them over his eyes. Then he stopped, turning back to face Violet.

"Well, this is it," he said, gesturing to the city that was clearly visible in the near distance. "Take care." Suddenly, he grabbed Violet's hand, pulling it to his lips and placing a small peck on the back of it. Violet's world began to spin slowly as Wade dropped her hand, and she struggled to maintain her composure. It was just a kiss on the hand; he must've been taught to do that to everyone.

"Th…thank you," she managed to mumble. Wade laughed. Violet looked up into his eyes, only seeing her reflection in his shades. HER reflection. Not Locke's, not his. Because if Wade had known…then no, he most definitely would NOT have kissed her anywhere. Violet held her breath.

Two seconds too long, Wade finally broke their stare and began to walk back towards the woods. Violet turned to watch him go. As if he could feel her watching, Wade turned back to add one last thing.

"Hey, take care of that Rattata, too! In case we meet again – they'll probably want to see each other!" Violet nodded and waved goodbye with one hand, giving a thumbs up with another.

So it was settled: she would keep the rat after all.

Route 1
Chapter I, Part VI

[PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon VR: Game of Chance (IC)

The Charmander looked up from Azure's boot, letting go ever so slightly. They didn't break eye contact for a minute or two and Azure took this as a yes, pulling a spare PokéBall out of her bag (she had to remember, she only 3 left now. Damn Pidgey) and kind of... dropped it on the Charmander. The ball ate the Charmander in a beam of light and rolled across the grass, clicking shut to confirm the catch. Excellent. At least she could brag to Viking about something slightly better than a Pidgey. How the hell did a Charmander end up in Route One anyway? Weren't they starter Pokémon only? It didn't matter a whole lot, she took her good fortune and went with it.

"Gaaast," Merry floated on down to her, not congratulating her on her catch, but seemingly unimpressed by it. Azure made a face back at him.

"Shut up, you. You couldn't catch a Pokémon to save yourself. You don't even have hands," Azure waved a hand at him, falling through his intangible body. Stupid ghost. "Anyway," she snapped her PokéDex back open, checking out her new Pokémon's stats, "he will hopefully be a lot more helpful than you."

Azure released the Charmander from its ball, almost falling over as he did so. Merry chuckled, floating down to the lizard and making an attempt to scare him. He succeeded, the Charmander's lip trembling as it let out a small wail.

"Stop it, Merry," Azure flicked her hand through him again. "Leave... oh! Pippin! And Merry! Get it? Meriadoc," she pointed at the Gastly, holding back a giggle as she released her inner nerd, "and Peregrin! Get it? Pippin and Merry? Oh man."

Her Pokémon gave her nothing but blank looks.

"Seriously? You've never seen Lord of the Rings? You guys suck."

Viridian City
Chapter II, Part I

[PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon VR: Game of Chance (IC)
[PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon VR: Game of Chance (IC)

After a confusing walk through the rest of Route 1, Azure managed to finally make it to Viridian City. She encountered a few wild Pokémon and saw Viking wandering through Route 1 but skillfully (not really) dodged all interactions. Viking seemed to have Pokémon with him so she was almost certain that if she talked to him, he would challenge her to a battle which she would not do with a Gastly who wanted to be as silly as possible and a Charmander who seemed to be scared of his own tail.

The town of Viridian was just as expanded from its 8-bit version as Pallet Town and it was like a dream, seeing all these buildings she kind of recognised and these people who were almost familiar. What gave her the biggest fright was the Pokémon Centre.

"It's... almost identical," she muttered quietly to herself, in awe of this building. Merry, unimpressed with her trainer, floated around lazily. Pippin on the other hand, was confused and stared with Azure, trying to understand what this was. It felt all so real! The shape, the red, the white, the sign!

"Rejuvenate your tired partners!"
POKéMON CENTER

As Azure stepped inside, she was greeted by the soft tune that she recognised as the Pokémon Centre tune and the smiling face of a Nurse Joy. Oh boy, pink hair in loops and everything. This was every nerd's dream right here.

"Welcome!" the nurse snapped Azure out of her trance. "Welcome to our Pokémon Center! Would you like me to heal your Pokémon back to perfect health?"

"Haha," Azure pointed at the nurse. "That's funny. You say the same thing."

"What?" the nurse raised an eyebrow. "Same as what?"

"Nothing, nothing," Azure finished her giggle. She didn't want to mess up the NPCs too much. What happens if they malfunctioned and she got stuck in a glitch? Fun. "Yeah, sure. Merry? Pip? Up here." She tapped on the desk. Merry floated over but Azure had to pick Pippin up, forgetting how small he was.

"And their balls?" The nurse motioned to Azure's belt.

"Excuse me?"

"Their PokéBalls."

"Oh, right," Azure clicked the red and white balls off her belt and handed them over. The nurse returned them both, thanked Azure and disappeared for a moment. Azure could almost hear the music that played when they healed as she saw movement and clinking noises from the next room over. Then, the nurse returned, placing the two balls back in Azure's hands.

"Thank you for waiting. We've restored your Pokémon to full health. We hope to see you again!"

"Thanks," Azure said, making a quick exit back outside. She released her Pokémon as soon as she did. They felt a lot more real when she could look at them the entire time.

"So, I guess we should go grind for a few hours, right?"

As Viking went back to the Pokémon Center to heal Ragnarök up, he could have sworn that he saw the girl from before walk out onto the street. Azure. So she got this far... then she most certainly wasn't a NPC. Interesting. He wondered with a smile if she had captured anything new since last time. But he didn't bother chasing after her; she was already gone from his sight anyways.

When his pokémon were healed up again, he sent then both out, standing on the tiny plaza in front of the pokémon center and eyeing them. "Hm, I wonder if you guys are good enough to take on a gym yet. You can breathe fire... or at least throw embers. And you can spout water."

The pokémon looked at each other. They could?

"You apparently learned Ember after the training session we had," Viking commented towards Ragnarök, examining her with the white pokédex. "That's useful. Now, where is the gym, then?"

He turned around, looking for some signs to tell him where to go. There were none in his vicinity. Maybe it was just situated somewhere on the northern side of the town, just like in the old games? He'd better ask a NPC.

Turning his head around, he saw a girl about his age walking towards the Pokémon Center. She was tall, at least as tall as Viking, her hair was violet and her eyes an emerald green color. The Rosa inside Viking's mind appreciated the looks of the girl at first... then she noticed the rather boring set of clothes and wiped any good thoughts away. Well, blame the game designers for the design of the NPCs.

"Hey," Viking said as she came closer. His Staryu and Charmander looked at the girl as well. "Do you know where I can find the pokémon gym?"

chapter 2 - part 1
//.2.b.a. master

After Wade's figure disappeared back into the woods, Violet turned her attention back to the first city she'd seen since arriving in the Pokemon world: Viridian. It looked a bit like some cities she'd seen back at home, although obviously not the size of Chicago.

She entered the city, intent on finding the Pokemon Center as soon as she could. Both of her Pokemon were in no position to fight, and the sky was beginning to darken a little. Plus, she'd yet to come up with a game plan. The ending of the letter still sat in the back of her mind. The only way to get out is to win…or something like that. So she had to win the game. And usually that meant collecting all eight badges and challenging the Elite Four. Then at the end, of course, was your rival. But she hadn't gotten one of those yet…

As if by command, a voice spoke to her out of nowhere.

"Hey." It was a boys voice; Violet turned to face the boy and was shocked to find herself staring into quite possibly the bluest eyes she'd ever seen….attached to a boy about her age. The eyes were NOTHING though compared to the awful hairdo he sported. Somehow, the boy's hair was colored white, and was held up on his head in a series of dreads, like a ponytail made of white hairy worms. It was dreadful. Violet gasped, stepping back. Although, her hair WAS purple…

"Do you know where I can find the Pokemon gym?" The boy had two Pokemon with him: a Charmander and an oddly colored Staryu. It looked to Violet like the Pokemon was shiny…something seldom seen in the Pokemon world. This boy had to be her rival, although he looked unlike any teen she'd ever seen before.

"Uh, no," she replied, looking down at his feet which were covered by a pair of black boots. "I just got here…"

Viking wrinkled his nose. An NPC didn't know the way to the gym? That sounded weird, but oh well.

"It's getting late and dark anyways. Maybe we should find some place to stay for the night instead, and find the gym tomorrow," he said, meant towards Staryu and Charmander but not really expecting or listening for answers.

He looked back at the trainer in front of him. She looked nervous. Maybe NPCs here really were quite alive and had strong personalities. The fire fighters had seemed like real people, so had the man at professor Oak's lab and all the people in Pallet Town. They hadn't seemed like NPCs at all when he thought about it. It was all very strange... or just a really well made game. So the trainer here could probably be just a NPC. There wasn't really any reason to believe that she was a human like him. And maybe like Azure. But he might as well check... just to not get any surprises later. If there would be surprises, Viking would want to be the one to deliver them.

"Have you tried opening the game menu yet?" he asked the girl with a clever look. If she was a NPC she would perhaps respond with some explanation of how it should be done, or perhaps laugh and wonder what on earth 'opening the game menu' was. But if she was a human, she might react differently.

Prince, Route 1 Part VII

He stared at her quizically, the sobriety upon his face the polar opposite to her apparent disposition. In his mind, thoughts were whizzing about trying to link together and come up with a plan that would get her in the Pokémon centre and also convince her to part with the Chinchou. Seeing the way the Pokémon behaved towards the two of them, he could tell it would be a lot harder than he initially anticipated. This was a realistic part of the game, Pokémon forming bonds with trainers. He considered leaving for a second to check the internet, to look up an FAQ that would tell him whether or not the game had been programmed this way. Or maybe this was an MMORPG of sorts, and Chloe was another player character? No, that was silly. No MMORPG had been announced at E3, and Corocoro hadn't featured anything of the sort in its scans...

He cleared his throat, softly. Ahead of them the grass was thinning out; the sky was slowly undergoing the transformation from day to night, and Viridian City was only a few moments away.

"I wouldn't say partner, I only got her today," he nodded and had a sudden brainwave. "When I started up the game, it wouldn't let me choose, she was already in the Pokéball." Oh? He had been allowed to break the fourth wall - now he needed to see if she was programmed to do the same or would become very confused. "Because of this, I don't think I was given the right Pokémon - I mean, something like Smoochum is more apt for a cute girl like yourself, whereas your Volt is suited for someone like me. You could always catch another Pokémon, but it's getting late and I don't think anything around here is as rare as Smoochum is..."

No way do I want another Rattata, he mused.

Viridian City, Part I

The ironic thing about Viridian City was that they entered it bathed in the light of a setting sun, so it didn't have much of a 'green' presence. Prince knew from experience that the Pokémon Centre was only a little way north from the entrance, but no way was this city as sparse as its previous-gen counterparts.

"Should we heal our Pokémon, then?" he asked pleasantly, though also having unpleasant thoughts that he kept to himself. "They'll probably be tired out from all the fighting they did - and perhaps after we're done we can grab something to eat. You must be hungry."

Prince then realised he hadn't eaten all day, but strangely his stomach did not feel empty in the slightest - nor did it feel full. He just simply... Didn't feel like eating, or drinking for that matter, though he would need some water to keep his skin lovely and smooth.

" Fitting the pieces! "

Chloe was so deep into her thoughts that she didn't even notice that the sun was slowly making its way down, painting the landscape with different shades of orange and violet. More important, the girl didn't even notice that she and Prince were just a few steps away from entering Viridian city. The town was again very different form the one in the games. Tall building took the place of the small garden houses that could be seen on the screen of the early games, only few remaining in the city. The town was more developed and had tons of stores and restaurants that went along the city center. Another addition was a trainer school, but seeing as Chloe had been playing pokemon since she was little it would surely not b eon her sightseeing list. The only things that were still the same were the good old Pokemon Center, PokeMart and Gym. However, Chloe was too worried about her current situation than to realize what was surrounding her. She took a deep breath and then looked at Prince.

" That still doesn't matter, I got Volt today too. " she replied her words starting to flow out faster and faster, like she wanted to say all her thoughts as quick as possible before her little bit of confidence ran out. " They are our first pokemon and was given to me as a match. I'm not the tinniest bit cute *her insecurity kicking in*. " she finally managed to say. Volt was very happy to know that her trainer, despite just getting him, was as fond of him as he was of her. He looked at Prince and stuck out his tongue thinking that Chloe had won the argument.

As silence started to envelope the atmosphere Prince's words started ringing into Chloe's mind. " Started the game? Given the right pokemon? " these questions started to fit into Chloe's mind like a puzzle until the last piece fell into place. "Wait a minute? Is he by any chance…..No it can't be true!" she was thinking as Prince was saying something about healing and eating. Chloe was too absorbed by her realization to be very attentive to the boy. " A-a-are you…….by any chance……a player from the real world???" she finally blurted out as they had just walked a few minutes into Viridian City. Chloe awaited silently for a reply. It was truly something hard to believe as this was still a beta game, but all the facts led to this….maybe she wasn't the only one to get chosen to test the game.

"Ah, there you are! Sorry for taking some time, the chocolate powder didn't want to dissolve into the hot water for some while." Chromos said.

He returned to the big room, ushering Nabooru and Dash to follow him. On the tray he held lay also the brown package.

"Yes... it so happens that this package needs imminent delivery to Viridian City's PokéMart. Alas, I'm busy with my work here. But! Maybe the two of you are going to Viridian very soon? Could you, please, take this package with you? Tell the person in the store that it is from the Oak Lab. And be careful! It's fragile. And don't EVER open it up!"

Nabooru blinked. Yeah, that sure does not sound suspicious... Nabooru though as she rolled her eyes.

"Yeah, I can do it," Dash volunteered. "It's on the way anyway. It's no big deal for me. I'll do it right away!" He then picked up the parcel. "Hey Nabooru. You should come with me! The more the merrier! Maybe we can revive your hopes for that fairly tale you were hoping for."

"Wait what -- " But before Nabooru could reply, Dash had already left. Nabooru let out a sigh as she waved goodbye to Chromos, and started to follow Dash. "Darn it, stop running so... fast..." Nabooru panted as she ran. She was never really any good at track and field.

Soon, she was in Route One, following Dash through the forest.

Route 22
Chapter II, Part II

[PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon VR: Game of Chance (IC)
[PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon VR: Game of Chance (IC)

Azure didn't bother talking to any of the NPCs as she made her way to Route 22. She knew where she was going, she didn't need any help to get there. As far as she knew, Route 22 was to the west and there were plenty of signs around to tell her where she was going and where she was coming from. She didn't need any help from NPCs that were just going to confuse her with jargon. She had already gotten enough grief from the damn tutorial. He must have been the most intelligent or the most correctly programmed, so she weeped for the mindless, walking people that 'lived' in this town. Or city. Viridian City.

Merry and Pippin (that still made her smile) followed their silent trainer without question, Merry floating beside her head and Pippin scrambling by her feet. She was content with her Pokémon for the moment but she knew if she wanted to challenge the gym in Pewter City, she needed a new Pokémon between now and then (one caught in Viridian Forest was usually a favourite. Like a Butterfree or something) or she needed to get this Charmander to learn Iron Tail or Metal Claw or whatever. Isn't that how she had to finish the game? Beat all the gym leaders and then, the Elite Four? That's how it usually worked, right? Of course, there was no actual end to Pokémon but hopefully there was a way out soon, or a checkpoint or something. As much as Azure was enjoying her virtual reality, she was sure that her mother would be worried that her daughter had been in her room for this long. Bronwyn needed to eat, plus there was that abomination called school.

Route 22 was oddly familiar. It was kind of... shaped the same, but real. And bigger. Much bigger.

"We can't go past there," she pointed to a stone footpath in the distance past an unusually grass area. "Gary freaking Oak is probably there to kill us so let's just... stay here." Hopefully this was loyal to the games. So far, it hadn't been with the lack of a Pokémon Professor to tell her to go into the grass, no Oak's parcel, no starting Pokémon she could choose from, no mum to give her running shoes and so far, no Gary Oak to kick her in the face when her Pokémon were half weak but hopefuly, from now on, it would be. "Let's train, hobbits."

She wandered around for about five or so minutes until there was a flurry of flapping and what looked like a Spearow shrieked at them. Okay, Pokémon battle. Time to take this thing down. Did it still have to be One on One? Was there a rule? God, who cares?

"Okay," she whipped out her PokéDex (which had now made its home conveniently in her back pocket) and checked stuff. Oh look, Merry had learned a move since last time. Sweet. "Alright Merry, use Mean Look so this thing doesn't get away." Mean Look was a literal representation of the move; giving the Pokémon an odd stare. If anything, that made Azure want to run away from her ghost. How did this world work?

"Okay, um, Pip! Use Scratch, I guess," Pip obeyed but was incredibly hesitant about it. So much so that the Spearow lazily flopped itself to the left as Pippin waved his arms about, running forward where the Spearow was. Seriously? "C'mon Pip, it's not that hard. Just... it's right there!"

The Spearow countered with a mean stare back at the ghost and the lizard. Azure could've sworn it was using Mean Look if she was dumb enough to think Spearow learned that move. Then, the Spearow leapt forward, beak first at Merry. Azure almost laughed but instead of passing right through, the Spearow made contact and Merry stumbled back through the air a little. Oh crud, these moves actually worked.

"Guys, like, attack at the same time or something. Teamwork! Scratch and Lick and stuff!" the two ran and floated forward together, bumping heads as the both attacked at the same time. They both hit, the Spearow went down but Azure didn't see; her face was buried in her hands. "You guys are... morons."

Prince: Viridian City, Part II

Well, that was the first thing they could agree on - Prince definitely did not see Chloe as appealing in any sense of the word. He kept his opinion to himself, however (were he to learn that this was really the internet then he would have no trouble flaming her until her avatar cried or her user logged off), and groaned inwardly. This girl would not give up her Pokémon - at least her starter anyway. Perhaps he could convince her to go get another one that he could still trade for Rattata, so long as she didn't catch a Rattata herself (that would be akward).

Of course, all these thoughts disappeared no sooner did she mention the real world. He flinched a little, and new thoughts replaced them, swarming his mind. So this
was an MMORPG? To test his theory, he tried to bring up a menu - he never really checked out his Pokémon until he had to switch the first one in his party to gain advantage over another trainer, or to train a weakling - only for this to fail.

He also wondered what the best way to answer her question would be. He could be honest with her and together they could try and come up with a solution to the mystery... But that would involve working with her, relying on someone who was so inferior to him. He could lie, pretend he was a player character and feign ignorance - yes, he could pretend that he was an event character and ditch her once he'd gotten what he wanted!

"Real world?" he echoed, confusion making its way onto his handsome face. "This is the real world." Prince pried the parasol out of her grasp and held it over himself, still pretending to be completely baffled by her. "Are you feeling okay? Maybe you should go rest up or something - have you eaten today? Yes, that must be it - too much sun and not enough nutrients has left your mind prey to hallucinations!"

They kept walking slowly towards the city center as dusk was falling upon them and the things that surrounded them. Chloe was waiting anxiously for an answer from Prince who looked like he was deep into his thoughts. Indeed Chloe's question wasn't really easy to answer. If he was a Npc then maybe she had just glitched him or he was trying to process the question he was asked and couldn't find an answer in his data. And if he was a real player maybe he was shocked to see that maybe she was one too. As they got in front of the Pokemon Center the stopped and Prince finally put an end to Chloe's mystery. Despite Chloe's belief, the boy answered like any other NPC would mostly due in this situation, he questioned her theory and soon started to ask of her health.

"……Y-y-yes I'm ok…I haven't felt any hunger or thirst. " she said a bit disappointed that her theory had been crushed. She had been very sure that he was indeed a player like her, but maybe this was for the best….one thing was to speak with a NPC and another to speak with a real person like her. " Interesting how I wasn't even one bit thirsty even thought it was kind of hot today. " she thought to herself as she gave the parasol to Prince.

" You're right, maybe I should go rest. " Chloe said taking a step backwards from Prince. " It's getting kind of late and I should get a room here. " she continued……she wanted to go into a room as soon as possible, the day had been long and full of events. All she needed now was a good night rest. " Thank you for escorting me Prince. Strangely… it was a pleasant walk. " she smiled warmly towards the boy. Indeed despite her social fear she managed to somehow suppress it a little and manage to get to Viridian City without having to run away from him. " Good night and maybe we'll see each other again sometime. " she spoke like she would have spoken with her friend Ivy. She turned around and walked into the center. However as she took a few steps a few things didn't fit right in her mind. Earlier Prince had said something about starting the game and being give a pokemon, in the same way as she received Volt. " If he was a NPC then he wouldn't have said so!" Chloe said to herself turning to see the doors behind her close over Prince, the last thing that she saw was his face as the doors shut.

chapter 2 - part 1.2
//.2.b.a. master

Violet was confused at first, unsure of whether or not the boy was talking to her. 'Opening the game menu' didn't really sound like something her rival would suggest…unless… Maybe THIS was the tutorial the letter had been talking about! But no…her rival wouldn't give it to her, would he? Only one way to find out.

"No, I haven't," Violet answered, standing up straighter. She was more confident now; she knew she was on the right path. Whether or not the boy was really her rival she didn't know. "But I suppose I should…"

Violet glanced to both sides, unsure of what to do next. "Usually in the games…" she wondered aloud. "You just press 'START' and the menu opens. But then where is the 'START'…?" A quick glance in her big showed nothing new. The bracelet on her wrist didn't seem to have any added functions, and no matter how many times or how loud she said the word 'start', nothing happened. After trying a various number of other phrases, Violet shrugged.

Nothing was working. She glanced half-heartedly up at the NPC. Wasn't he supposed to be teaching her by now? "I got nothing…" she muttered, hoping for a solution.

So she was a human player. There was at least three of them here now, and no reason why there wouldn't be even more. Good to know. Not as good to know that she too had failed to bring up the menu. Maybe he should tell her that he too had failed... the Rosa inside of him wanted to stretch out and make friends - friends could be useful in a strange environment like this. But Viking's persistent, mischievous side still wanted to keep the charade up.

"Figured," he said. "You are not meant to be able to open up the menu in this game. If you want to check on your pokémon, you have to take forth the pokémon and the pokédex and check it yourself. If you want to quit, you have to play to the end. Your letter said so, right?"

The last part was a guess, but it didn't seem too farfetched a thought that this girl, like Viking and Azure, had received a letter at the start as well. He put on a nonchalant face.

"Anyways, my name is Viking and you'll find me nowhere and everywhere." Yeah, that was a cool enough catchphrase for a NPC. "What's your name?"

He looked up into the darker and darker sky. "It's getting late. We should see if they offer free beds at the Pokémon Center," he told his pokémon. "What's your plan?" he then asked the girl.

Dash-Route 1

*image removed**image removed**image removed**image removed**image removed**image removed*

"Seems we gotta work on your cardio, Nabooru" Dash said with some laughter as he followed the dirt path through Route 1. At this point, he was an expert on this route having traveled through it earlier, got sidetracked, backtracked to Pallet Town and now traveling through it again. He kept up a brisk pace, much to Nabooru's displeasure. For a NPC, she got tired quickly. Wait, could computer programs get tired? The sun was setting and it was apparent that night was only a few hours away. "Great, if we don't hurry up the store will close and we will probably fail to deliver this on time," Dash mumbled under his breath glancing at the package tucked under his arms.

Then curiosity of what lied in the package was mounting. Ever since he accepted the job, Dash couldn't help but wonder. He was smart enough (surprisingly) to realize that asking the lab assistant was pointless so he accepted the challenge without much of a second thought. But it didn't remedy the fact that Dash didn't like not knowing what was inside. He flirted with the idea of opening the package as this very moment, slowly down his stride a bit. "Hey, Nabooru. I think I am going to run ahead and deliver this before the store closes. I can live up to my name and get pretty quickly. Meet me at the Pokemon Center in the city, okay?" Dash said with a smile and a wink. Dash sprinted forth, almost literally leaving Nabooru in the dust. He hoped she would wait for him. For whatever reason, Dash liked her company even if they barely talked much. It probably helped she was one of the few people he had met in the game that didn't pass judgement on his hair.

When Dash was a fair distance ahead of Nabooru, Dash took a slight detour of the beaten path and crouched down in the shadows. After making sure he was well hidden, Dash took the package and stared at it intently. Carefully opening the package (avoiding tearing the whole thing apart), Dash reached down into the parcel and grasped a rough, jagged object. Dash extracted the object from the package and inspected it. Even in the low sunlight, the object glistened lightly and its shaped resembled that of sun and its gentle rays emanating from the center. "A Sun Stone?" Dash said after recognizing the object. "Why is this so important? Can't you just buy this at a store?" Dash shrugged and put the stone back into its package and poorly wrapped it up. Worst case, he would make up some lie that a fleet of Rattata tore up the parcel and he had to salvage the remains.

->Viridian City

It was without a doubt evening when Dash reached the city limits of Viridian City. Now while game designers clearly were aiming for some shock and awe when they brought the originally quaint little city that games make Viridian seem to be to life with streets and living breathing population, Dash was somehow…unimpressed. It was what he imagined it to be. That and Dash had little to waste. Dash briefly navigated the main streets of the city, glancing at each building to find one that was clearly identified as the PokeMart. At least that is what he expected it to say, as the game had changed a lot of small details for the sake of immersion. Eventually, Dash struck gold and found the store. He approached the door, opening the store was still open...
