[Pokémon] Pokemon Anime Marathon Club

I've been wanting to rewatch the Pokemon anime for a while now, and I figured doing a marathon of the series might be a good idea for a club! The idea is that we all start from S1 EP1 and slowly work our way through the anime; watching an episode every 3 days. Episodes will be watched on our own time, but I'll post updating the current episode in this thread around midnight my time (CST) at the beginning of each 3 day period. I'm currently planning on just going through the regular anime episodes but I'm open to doing the movies as well if people want. The rules are as follows:

1. All subforum/global PC rules apply
2. Please keep discussion to the current episode or at least the current season.

If you want to join, just post letting me know! The marathon will begin on September 1st, 2024; but if you're reading this after that date you're still more then welcome to join! I'll maintain an updated list of members below:

Founder: PoryKid575
Members: VisionofMilotic, LeGoldenWolf, Gingerbread, kpac_xjynx, Inari_V, Kip, LogChop, Janp, PokemonMegaFan, Yellow Bommen, Astinus, Yunahy
Current Episode: "The Ancient Puzzle of Pokemopolis" - Episode 15, Season 2 (Indigo League)

Additional note: Feel free to reach out through DM if you have any comments/concerns/feedback. I'm not very experienced running a club like this, so I really appreciate any ideas on how I can make this place better!

Count me in! The anime is what first brought me into the franchise, and holds a special place my heart. This is going to hit differently with Rachael Lillis passing away, but all the more reason to revisit it and give the anime some love, appreciating the legacy. 😭

Would absolutely love to join have been planning on a rewatch myself and I think watching as a group would make the experience that much better

Made an account just for this! Anime was what introduced me to Pokemon, I was always so hyped whenever it was on TV, I'll love to revisit those carefree childhood memories again. I'm in :)

Hey, I would love to join in on this. Count me in as well. And as someone else mentioned, this is gonna feel a whole lot different, ever since Rachael Lillis passed away, but still none-the-less, it will also be nostalgic, especially for me. In fact, ever since I heard the news about how Rachael Lillis had passed away, I have been re-watching the Pokemon anime, and movies myself, on my own time. Now I'm still doing my own re-watch of the Pokemon anime and movies, myself on my own time. But I'd love to join in on this as well. But I have a few questions about this first.

1. What days of the week, and what times of the day are we gonna be doing this? Cause I do have my own schedule, and I'm usually busy with other things on the weekends, but I'll be sure to try to make it, whenever I can.

2. What site or streaming platform will we be watching this on with you?

3. Where do we comment our thoughts on each of the episodes?

4. I know that this is mostly the Pokemon anime, but could you please do the Pokemon movies as well, whenever they come up in the timeline? And maybe if you're able to, could you do the Pikachu shorts from the first six movies as well?

That's all. Sorry for the long comment, I just had a lot to say on this, that's all.

I'm glad you're interested! Hope you enjoy the rewatch!

1. The episodes aren't set for specific days of the week, they advance every 3 days. So "I Choose You" will be from 09/01-09/03, "Pokemon Emergency!" will be from 09/04-09/06, etc.

2. This club is asynchronous, so the episodes are watched on our own time/through whichever methods we have access to instead of streaming at a specific time. Other people may want to stream the episodes together, but they aren't officially associated with the club and you'd have to coordinate with them separately.

3. I'll make a post at the beginning of each 3 day period updating the current episode (~around 1AM EST/7AM UK since I live in CST) and any thoughts can be added in this thread below it.

4. Sure! I'll insert them in order of release date (in between the episodes that aired in NA directly before/after the initial release), I'm also happy to include the Pikachu shorts!

You know what? Count me in. I've been getting hit with a lot of Pokémon nostalgia, so why not do something connected with what introduced me to the franchise.

While I'm personally not interested, I hope this goes well and you have a great time! I might check in out of curiosity every so often, and if these happen in the future and they catch my eye I may be on board then.

Season 1 Episode 1 - "I Choose You!"

It's finally September 1st, which means it's time for the marathon to begin! It's kinda weird watching Ash and Pikachu not getting along at all after so many years of them having a tight bond in this first episode, but you have to start somewhere I guess lol. I think I Choose You is a fantastic start to the series though and the plot is extremely solid, while the concept of Pokemon is elaborated on fairly well, I didn't feel like the exposition dragged too much and the explanations of basic stuff like starters fit well with Ash also being a newbie trainer and receiving this information right alongside us. You can definitely feel some early-installment jank (eg: the Pokedex making unsolicited sassy comments and Ho-Oh looking quite different from its final Gen 2 design), but it's a great taster for the show as a whole. You get a little of everything, some pretty funny moments with Spearow and Gary, exposition about the world from Oak/the narrator and of course the iconic ending of Ash standing in front of the flock to protect Pikachu. Just an all-around really solid start for the show and the franchise as a whole in NA. What are your thoughts?

It's also September here now, so let's watch the first episode. I'll write down my thoughts as the episode goes on...

I love the opening scene, the Game Boy sound effect is nice touch that I never quite noticed before.

I always loved the details in Ash's room. All the Pokémon-themed toys are so adorable. It's one thing that I remember the original series did really well.

And... Ash is late. Let this be an inspiration for everyone. Even when you're late on your first day of work, you can still become a boss at the end (but only if you're 10 years old for 20+ years).

Gary's introduction is so over the top. I like how they tried to make him as insufferable as possible. I also remember his first Pokémon being such a huge mystery, back when the series first aired. So many people thought it was Eevee because of Pokémon Yellow. And I like that both Ash and Gary's initially pick the same starter. Or at least wanted to pick the same.

Oak's lab's interior reminds me of Dragon Ball. I don't know why...

You know, it's crazy that a town with 4 buildings can put together not one, but two huge crowds to celebrate sending their young to the world.

It's time for Ash to leave the town at once. I like his banter with Dex.

Ash is casually stealing a bike...

And the ending is such a iconic moment! It's also first time Ash dies on screen. Alongside the whole flock of Spearow. You know what, let's count every time Ash dies in the series.

Ash's death counter: 1

Hey, it's September 1st now where I'm at, and I know that the marathon has just started and all, and I have been watching the Pokemon anime on my own time. I have been watching the Pokemon anime through my Pokemon DVDs, myself. But first, before I comment my thoughts on Pokemon Indigo League: Season 1: Episode 1: Pokemon, I Choose You!, I'm gonna have to take some notes, by writing down my thoughts in my notebook, as I re-watch Episode 1: Pokemon, I Choose You!, so that way I'll be ready, and I can remember everything that I wanna say on this first episode. Yes, I'm taking this re-watch marathon pretty seriously. I'm gonna go ahead and start writing down my notes in my notebook tonight, and after that I should have my thoughts out on this first episode by tomorrow.

In the meantime, I do have a few more questions that I recently thought of, that I wanna ask you about. I know I asked you some questions about this before, but I just recently thought of some more, that I didn't really think about before. Okay, here's my questions:

1. I know I asked about the movies before, as well as the Pikachu shorts, but are you gonna be doing any of the Special Episodes as well? For example, the first Special, Mewtwo Returns, the episodes from Pokemon Chronicles, and the 2 Pikachu's Winter Vacation Specials? As well as the 3 Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Specials? Granted, I know that these aren't easily accessible, and most of these aren't on DVD in North America, except for Mewtwo Returns, (which I only have on VHS), and the 2 Pikachu's Winter Vacation Specials, (which I only have the 2nd one on VHS), but I do have recordings of Pokemon Chronicles, and the 3 Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Specials, which I recorded off of Cartoon Network and Toonami on Cartoon Network, back when they aired, so I have seen these Specials before.

2. I know that this might be a bit controversial, but are you gonna include any of banned or should I say, "Lost Episodes", such as, Episode 18: Beauty and the Beach, Episode 35: The Legend of Dratini, Episode 38: Electric Soldier Porygon, (I can actually understand if you don't wanna include this one, though), and finally Episode 252: The Ice Cave? Though, I'm not sure where to watch these myself.

3. Are you gonna include any of the episodes that feature Jynx, such as, Episode 65: Holiday Hi-Jynx, Episode 92: Stage Fight, Episode 101: The Mandarin Island Miss-Match, and like I mentioned before, Episode 252: The Ice Cave, since this one also includes Jynx? Though, that last one, I'm not sure where to watch it.

I think that those are finally all of my questions that I was wondering about. Now I'm gonna take some notes in my notebook about Season 1: Episode 1: Pokemon, I Choose You!, and I should have my thoughts out about it tomorrow. And hey, thanks for answering all of my questions so far.

1. I don't plan on covering the Special Episodes in this club, as you mentioned, they're not very easily accessible and aren't really part of the "main" story either.

2 & 3. My general approach with "banned" episodes is that I plan on covering them if they were dubbed into English and skipping them if they weren't, so Beauty and the Beach/Holiday Hi-Jynx will be included but the Dratini and Porygon episodes won't.

Almost forgot about this!

Just got done watching the first episode, and what an absolute blast of nostalgia. Right from the very first note of the theme song to the very end of the PokéRap, it was all nostalgia. I could even remember the little tiny details that I always enjoyed about this episode, like the weird "bloop" noise Squirtle makes in Ash's dream, or Gary's little "Yeah?" when Ash tries to ask him a question. Everything made me grin while watching. The ending bit with Pikachu's strong blast of electricity and then the two of them waking up when the sun comes out is still emotional. It hits a little harder when revisiting this, because I just know what Ash and Pikachu will go through together.

As for the...technical? side of the episode, it does work as a decent introduction to the world of Pokémon. It's great that Ash is so...dumb when it comes to things, since it allows newcomers to learn alongside him without the explanations coming from nowhere or being too heavy. (I'm watching this with a few others who have never seen this before and know very little about Pokémon.) It's also fun to spot the censorship! Like when Misty was supposed to slap Ash, but it just freezes on his face for a few extra beats. For being an anime of the 90's, it doesn't really show its age much, and actually feels rather cozy to watch. Though that might be the nostalgia.

Okay, here are my thoughts on the first episode of Pokemon.

Pokemon Indigo League: Season 1: Episode 1: Pokemon - I Choose You!

Here's what I got in my notes so far. And if I may, I would like to comment a little bit about the opening theme song, as well, since I wrote about it in the first page of my notes. Okay, here's my notes so far:

Page 1 of my notes:

Opening theme song shows us a glimpse of Mewtwo and Mew flying through space. As well as Ash staring up in the sky from an empty stadium. We see shots of other Pokemon as well, such as Squirtle, Pidgeotto, and Cubone, and Bulbasaur being caught in a Poke Ball by Ash. Also Ash's Charmander being licked by a wild Haunter. Ash throwing a Poke Ball. Ash and Pikachu racing a wild Arcanine and Rapidash on foot. And we see Zapdos and Articuno flying through the sky. Cut to a wild Sandshrew, a Kadabra, and a Charmander, which is most likely Ash's. And a wild Gyarados, and Dragonair jumping through the water, with Ash and Pikachu riding on a Lapras in the background. A random Pokemon being caught in a Poke Ball. Raichu attempting to use Body Slam on Pikachu, but Pikachu dodges it. Caterpie standing up to Ekans and Koffing. Ash hugging Pikachu. Tentacruel destroying a building with one of its tentacles.

Page 2 of my notes:

Okay, I think I've said enough about the opening. Now on to the actual episode. We see the intro from the GameBoy games, Pokemon Red Version specifically. With a Nidorino and a Gengar battling it out. We see a stadium and a crowd full of people. Announcer saying that Nidorino is using its Horn Attack. Gengar using its Hypnosis Attack. The trainer calls back Nidorino. The trainer looks like he might be actually Bruno from the Elite Four. He throws a green and white Poke Ball and sends out Onix. Wait, Bruno has an Onix in the GameBoy games. This trainer must be Bruno. Onix looks like it's using Slam Attack against Gengar. This was all being shown on a TV screen. We are now officially introduced to our main protagonist, Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town. Ash has a Snorlax doll in his room, a Poliwag pencil sharpener, a Clefairy piggy bank, and toy Zubats hanging from his ceiling.

Page 3 of my notes:

Ash just turned 10 years old, and is now old enough to become a Pokemon trainer. He has a poster of the three starter Pokemon, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander. Ash puts on his cap and turns it backwards, and grabs a toy Voltorb alarm clock, like it's a Poke Ball, and holds it in front of him, declaring that he will be a Pokemon master. We then meet Ash's mother, who catches the Voltorb alarm clock that Ash accidentally threw, when his mother startled him. His mother tells him to go to bed. And Ash says he can't sleep, so his mother changes the channel on the TV to a channel about Professor Oak, saying that tomorrow is the big day for new trainers to choose a starter Pokemon between Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. Ash's mother tells Ash to go to bed when it's over.

That's all of my notes that I have written down in my notebook so far. And I know that I've only just talked about the beginning of the episode. I mean, I would have written down some more, but I've just kind of been a bit pre-occupied with other things. Oh and my electricity went off earlier today where I'm at, so I had a power outage today, and it didn't come back on until about 7:00 PM Eastern Time. I only bring this up, cause I couldn't watch the episode, and take notes on it earlier today, cause I had a power outage earlier today until about 7:00 PM Eastern Time.

Anyways, I'll just wrap up my thoughts about this episode by going from I remember about watching it.

Ash dreams about getting his first Pokemon, and sending them out from their Poke Balls, starting with Bulbasaur, then Squirtle, and then finally Charmander. Also, what's with the Dodrio on the roof of Ash's house crowing, like it's a rooster or something? Ash finally wakes up, and meets Gary, who is Professor Oak's grandson. Gary brags that he got his first Pokemon, and Ash asks him what kind of Pokemon he got, but Gary refuses, saying, "None of your business." Gary and his cheerleaders go on their way. Ash is angered by Gary's actions, setting Gary up as Ash's first rival. Professor Oak comes and brings Ash into his laboratory, and Ash initally wanted to choose Squirtle, but Professor Oak says that Pokemon is taken. Then Ash wants to choose Bulabasaur, but Professor Oak says that Pokemon is also taken. Then Ash wants to choose Charmander, but Professor Oak says that Pokemon is also taken. Professor Oak says that there's one more Pokemon, and so Ash gets stuck with a somewhat stubborn Pikachu, who shocks Ash and Professor Oak right away. Ash shows his mother his Pokemon Pikachu, who then shocks everyone in the crowd. Ash says goodbye to his mother, who packs him a bunch of stuff she thinks he'll need for his journey. I also think that it's kind of funny that Ash's mother tells him to change his underwear every single day. Another thing I find kind of funny is how sassy Pikachu is to Ash in this first episode. Ash tries to catch a Pidgey in a Poke Ball, but the Pidgey escapes the Poke Ball, and so Ash tries to trap in his pajamas that his mother packed for him. But the Pidgey escapes once again using its Sand Attack, and its Gust Attack. Ash tries to a throw a rock at what he thinks is the Pidgey, but it's actually a Spearow, and the Spearow becomes enraged and starts attacking Ash and Pikachu. Until Pikachu uses it's Thunder Shock on the Spearow. The wild Spearow then uses what I like to call its Call For Family Attack, because it calls for a whole herd of more wild Spearow in the trees to start attacking Ash and Pikachu. Ash and Pikachu make a run for it, and try swimming away under water. It's at this point in the episode where we meet my personal favorite Poke Girl, and I'm sure she's also most everbody else's favorite as well. That's right, I'm talking about the one and only red-haired girl, though to me I think she looks more like a orange-haired girl, the one and only Misty. She fishes up Ash and Pikachu, and it's implied that she slapped Ash, but I guess 4Kids decided to edit that part out, for some reason, probably cause they thought that it was too violent for kids. So that explains why Ash's cheek is red, afterwards. Anyways, Ash steals Misty's bike, to save Pikachu, and Misty is so angry and annoyed by this. The Spearow come back trying to get their revenge, but Ash tries to get Pikachu to go in its Poke Ball, which it refuses, and Ash stands up to the flock of Spearow. Seeing this, Pikachu finally comes to its senses, and jumps up on Ash's shoulder, leaps into the air, and uses a powerful Thunder Shock to zap away the horde of Spearow. But Pikachu is still gravely wounded after the battle, and now seems to trust Ash, as he carries him, and Pikachu licks Ash in a friendly manner. Before the episode ends, Ash sees a flying Pokemon flying through the sky, which is unidentified, which we all know as Ho-oh. The narrator says that this is just the beginning, of the adventures of Ash and Pikachu, in the world of Pokemon. End of episode.

Phew! So those are all of my thoughts on this first episode. I know that this was a really long post, but I wanted to try and get all of my thoughts out on it. Let me know what you guys think.
