    POKEMON HELIO VERSION
    The Emort Region
The Emort Region, the center of the action of Helio Version, is based of the Chubu region of Japan. It is home to 95 already known pokemon and 107 new pokemon. A large volcano, Mt. Sanguit, dominates the south of the mainland. The rest of Emort is spread out across three islands. The region itself is a hotbed for radical activity. Three mainstream religions dedicated to gods of pokemon dominate the spirituality of the region, and a small, fanatical group of Arceus worshippers simply known as the "Zealots" spread terror to those heretics who do not believe. Not only that, but recently the region has been devastated by a mysterious group known as Team Solar, who want to increase global warming and seemingly destroy the Earth. But why would they do that? And why is one of their symbols Rayquaza, the legendary god pokemon of the sky who, shockingly, was recently declared dead? The situation can perhaps be best explained by an editorial written by Professor Palm, the most respected scientist in the region

    SENDING OUT THE CALL

    By Professor Charles Palm, PhD

    Team Solar.

Really, does any other set of words now a days spark as much fear and confusion as the name of the dreaded eco-terrorist group? Never since the days of Team Galactic has such a name been the source of such dread. It seems to be our curse to see a new crime team rise to power almost every other year. So be it.

The Pulchratic Texts say "For illness, there is the cure." So far, that statement is true. Four times now have large criminal syndicates risen to power. And every time, a young man in his teens has gone out and eradicated the system, dealing justice out on almost a biblical level. My colleague Professor Oak has publicly stated "It is the connection to his pokemon that brought Red victory." Red, of course, is the hero who destroyed Team Rocket the first time. Each hero has had a special connection to pokemon. No man has destroyed any large power without it.

And so I am tempting fate. I am sending out the call to arms needed in this time of crisis. There are some who say Mew, Adamoide, Moltres, or whatever deity they believe in can not be made to do something. They say he takes matters into his own hands. I say, now we deal with this ourselves. If a god hasn't sent a hero to me, I'll attract him or her myself.

I have three pokemon I am willing to give away: Chamelica (Grass), Kittorch (Fire) and Fitsu (Water). Whoever can prove to me they are that hero, that they can destroy Team Solar, shall have one of these pokemon.

Team Solar is ruthless. Their plans to pollute earth into oblivion is clearly the product of a psychotic mind. I cannot fathom why they would attempt so idiotic a task. Yet they have persisted, and proven to be dangerous. In these dangerous times, we need another cure, another miracle.

    We need another hero.

    Be that hero.

Okay, is this the same Starmytt/Evan that I've met in PFU? So now you change programs from hacking to game making?

This sounds better than most new fan-games I see. I hope this gets developed. :)

Except I'm not Starmytt, I'm his script guy :). And yes, its still a a hack. I just wanted to get feedback about the story.

Well thank you. We pride ourselves not only on our new region, but on our extensive plot as well. If you think that it's good NOW, then you've seen nothing yet.

Ok. Let's all take a step back and check our spelling, shall we?
    Thank you.

[PokeCommunity.com] Pokemon Helio Version Here's a map on Emort, I've circled Mt. Sanguit in Red.

Except I'm not Starmytt, I'm his script guy :). And yes, its still a a hack. I just wanted to get feedback about the story.

If it's a hack, you'd be better off posting in the ROM hacking scrapbox. Unless you want to reconsider, and make it a game using an engine such as Game Maker, Sphere, or RPG Maker?

Good luck anyway; the story is very different than usual. Not too keen on the 'love triangle' type thing, though. You should make it clear whether each character is male or female, too; it's a bit confusing right now.

EDIT: Just realised I've seen this before, on Serebii :P

Ah, the love triangle. In any case, its a bit more complicated then I make it seem :).

Smith, the male, loves Selene, and doesn't care much for Team Solar. He's only in it for the money. Jones, the female, loves Smith. She is a Arceun, and is devoted to the cause of Team Solar. At one point in the story, Selene, working for Team Solar, kidnaps the fourth gym leader (Noah) and takes him to Smith and Jones. Their plan is to blackmail Noah's mistress, Eliza, or else they will not only leak to the papers of their forbidden love, but also kill Noah and frame the murder on Eliza. After a discussion between the three, Jones proposes to Smith. But Smith tells her he is in love with Selene, and they defeat and tie up Jones. They then tell her that all they really want to do is take the money and break from Team Solar, running away to the Kanto Region to get married. Helios enters at this point and is able to defeat the two and place the three of them in jail.
Much later, the three are sprung from jail by Julian, who is furious at Smith and Selene. He promotes Jones for standing firm, demotes Smith for attacking Jones, and dismisses Selene. Later, Selene will meet up with Helios, who is trying to get to Team Solar's moon base but needs another person to pilot the rocket he got from the Assassin (ALL WILL BE EXPLAINED WHEN I PUBLISH A FULL SUMMARY).
So, Selene helps him to satisfy her revenge. When Julian sees that the two have landed, he orders Smith to fight Selene to redeem himself. Unable to bring himself to fight Selene, Smith commits suicide by walking out of the base not wearing a suit, suffocating himself.

So, the story is very complex. Some of the background info may seem odd, but that's cause I haven't published the full summary here yet. If anyone wants me to clarify something that seems out of place, ask. Criticism is also welcome.

I think to make it easier, I'll add in details about the gym leaders and Elite Four, Bards, feel free to remind me if i do anything wrong.

    Blinda (Water)
    Noah (Dragon)

    Kenta (Dark)
    Oran (Psychic)

    And E4
    #1 Seth - Ghost
    #2 Samuel - Fighting
    #3 Alessio - Flying

lol sorry. Great story there. Maybe you should show us the sprites you've done. Thanks

Starrmyt's avatar is a good example of one of our sprites. Starrmyt himself has a collection of most of the 202 sprites, so hopefully seeing this, he'll post some.

Here it is: the bullet point by bullet point summary. Enjoy

*You are 17 and just graduated high school.
*You (Helios) are confronted by your rival (Selene) who states that she is getting a pokemon and leaving your home town of Oriole Town.
*Going over to Selene's house, you see Selene talking with a mysterious man, who leaves. Selene yells at you for disturbing her and leaves.
*You and Selene head to Professor Palm's lab. You pick one of three pokemon Selene always picks Koffing.
*Leaving the lab, you see Selene talking with the mysterious man about joining Team.... She then notices you, battles you, and loses. The man runs away.
*Professor Palm rushes outside, exclaiming he forgot something. He gives you and Selene a pokedex and pokeballs.
*Heading to Whimbrel Town, the gym is closed. A local lapras sailor, offers to give you a ride to the mainland, but only if you can show him a gym badge. Warren then appears and re-opens his gym.
    *You battle and beat Warren.
*You are approached by the mysterious man and a woman, who identify themselves as Lieutenants Smith and Jones, respectively. They offer you a position in Team Solar, an organization apparently dedicated to speeding up global warming for the good of mankind. You refuse.
*Approaching Lewis, you notice Selene is there too. You battle her to get the first ride, but she bribes Lewis into giving her the first ride
*At the mart, you meet Evan, who introduces himself and gives you half off on Lewis' rides.
*Setting sail, you stop at Tern City for Lewis to restock. In Tern City, you see a Team Solar grunt mugging a woman, and looking for a man who resembles you. Upon seeing you, he battles you and loses. He then runs away back to his ship.
*Following him, you come across several more grunts and a man known only as the Assassin, as well as his employer, Julian. Julian reveals he is the head of Team Solar, and states that he wishes you dead. He had hired to Assassin to secretly kill you, but since you are here, the Assassin will just kill you now. After losing, the Assassin, Julian, and the grunts run away.
*Arriving back in town, you meet a man named Felix, who thanks you and declares his hate for Team Solar.
*You beat the gym leader and sail to the main land.
*In Avocet Town, a man is robbed and a warning is left for you to not interfere.
*In the (fourth gym town), upon entering the gym, you find Selene kidnapping the leader. You beat her, and she flees with the leader.
*working with Chen, the police chief, you interrogate a private and discover the location of Team Solar's operation's base in the town.
*You head into the base, and overhear Jones gloating over the leader how she knows that he is involved in an affair with Eliza (the sixth leader) and that Team Solar is planning to blackmail Eliza with this knowledge. If she does not comply, they will not only reveal the information to the papers, but murder Noah (the fourth leader) and frame it on Eliza. Then, Jones proposes to Smith.
*Smith rejects it however, and reveals that he is in love with Selene, and the two are planning to take the blackmail money and elope, leaving Team Solar. The duo tie up an astonished Jones and gloat.
*You enter, battle the pair, defeat them, and hand all three of them over to Chen, who rewards you.
*You progress normally through the game.
*In the town of the sixth gym, you are rewarded with a masterball by Eliza.
*In the next town, Gannet Town, you arrive to discover the town is under siege. Julian wanted to go to Mt. Sanguit undisturbed, so he took over Gannet Town to cement his passage. As you arrive, Julian returns from Mt. Sanguit, angry.
*Battling your way though, you discover that Julian has sprung the trio from jail, promoted Jones, demoted Smith, and kicked out Selene. You battle and defeat Jones.
*Getting to Julian, you discover Felix there as well. With you help, you double battle Julian and defeat him. But he doesn't mind, saying his purpose is achieved, and orders a massive retreat.
*Curious, you head to Mt. Sanguit, where you commune with the sprit of Rayquaza. It tells you that several years ago, pollution drove it mad. Julian heard about this, and hoped to capture Rayquaza. But Rayquaza killed all his pokemon and was about to kill him when Julian saw a weak spot and drove his hunting dagger in, killing Rayquaza. The knowledge that he was a deicide drove Julian insane. He decided that if Rayquaza went insane, then global warming was irreversible. To redeem himself, he had to save humanity. So, he became champion and secretly built a moon colony where humanity could live after the earth became too polluted. But as the years rolled by, Julian lost his championship, and the promised apocalypse did not come. Since Julian believed that he personally must lead you humanity to the moon colony to redeem his soul, he founded Team Solar to speed up global warming.
*Rayquaza then condemns Julian and orders you to stop him.
*On attempting to leave Mt. Sanguit, the Assassin attacks you. Beating him, he flees.
*Following the Assassin to Rail Town, you confront and defeat him, and in exchange for his life, he gives you his Team Solar rocket-ship, which needs a two man crew.
*Curious about how Julian will attempt to speed up global warming, you head to the Raven City library. But Julian is also there, and he battles you. Losing, he declares he has the necessary information, and leaves.
*After beating the Raven City leader, Selene appears in town. She offers to join you out of revenge.
*Chen and an officer see you with Selene, and battle you for assisting a fugitive. You beat them and escape.
*Heading to the rocket, you find Felix nearby, who wants to come and see Team Solar destroyed.
You invade the moon base. Upon hearing of your coming, Smith is asked to kill Selene, and he promptly commits suicide. You are informed of this by Jones after you beat her.
*You fight Julian. After losing, he attempts to summon Soltaria to enhance the sun's rays, but Soltaria disobeys and flees. It occurs to Julian that this might mean that Rayquaza does not approve of him. His entire life's work dashed to pieces in an instant, and having found out that the god he served his whole life wants him dead, Julian commits suicide.
*Heading back to earth, you are congratulated by Chen, who apologizes and rewards you.
    *You beat the Elite Four.

    And thats the plot.

    Mhm..
Those sprites could use some work on the poses.
But i can tell you know what your doing.
    Keep at it.

This project reminds me thouroughly of another project I was working on for a long time; you have everything that a project could possibly need: beautiful sprites, dedicated staff, and a lovely and well-thought-out storyline with convincing, memorable characters.

Or do you? I'm not talking about the storyline thing--that's really good-- but rather your game progress. It's too bad it's a hack, because imo this could go so much farther if it were an independent fangame-- more flexibility with scripts, for one, and less tedium with pallettes and ROM space and... well, a lot.

...But, see. I've been on more projects like this than you know. And, looking at your dev forum, I can tell what you've got, which is plenty in the right places and not nearly enough in the wrong ones. Have you done any work on the hack itself, short of inserting sprites and mapping, and bickering about music and movesets and nitpicky matters like that? Your spriter is highly skilled, whoever he or she is, but do you have backsprites? Your project is beautiful, yes, but you've gotta get a game underneath all that fluff before your plot can hold any water.

Hah. Wow, that's for the great crit.

Ok. When I started the project, I didn't even know I could turn it into a game. When I was introduced to the idea of ROM hacking, I was dumbfounded. I could actually create my dream game into a game. Really.

I 'hired' a ROM hacker, who has been faithful to us since we started about 13 months ago (he designed the grass starters). He's been working on the ROM hack for a while, and should be getting a video on youtube of the first two towns soon. Which is good. I've only found out EXTREMELY recently about making a game without ROM hacking. And I think that would be easier for us, as we have (I think) more stuff than a pokemon ROM could contain.

I just don't know if my ROM hacker knows how to work one of those programs.

And we do have backsprites, but they were lost on the Pokemon Fan Universe when it closed down. The only one we have left is Chamelica's. In fact, we have a bunch of Chamelica stuff that was saved.

Really, I can only back what Starrmyt said. Our biggest problem, to me, is the fact that we don't have sprites for the main characters, gym leaders, etc. We don't even have back sprites yet. I'd like to see progress, but unfortunately, I'm not a good spriter. I thoroughly dependent on the three or so spriters we have working, of which only one is turning in work on an almost daily basis. For now, all I can do is try to get our hackers and spriters moving.

Hm kay...so as we're nearing Memorial Day, I feel like somethings's missing. (From this thread and that sentance...)

I'd like to tell the public of two ideas that our team has.

First: Two new eeveelutions. Why? Because the public loves 'em. Really.

    Oreon and Asideon.
    *image removed**image removed*
Second: A new idea, we're basically taking Feebas and Eevee and stealing ideas from them to make: Cupola.
    [PokeCommunity.com] Pokemon Helio Version

Yup, Cupola. I freaking LOVE this guy. That's based off of the Latin word for 'Dome'. It's steel type. IT evolves, like Eevee, into many different forms (5), and like Feebas, evolution is dependant on contest stats.

    Any questions?

How experienced is your hacker? How far have you actually gotten that you know about? Do you have any actual screenshots, or is it all conceptual? :/ Really, what you've got could make a very nice RP forum (for that, you don't need backshots or anything, and the sprites can be as big as you want, and you don't need to worry about game size or character sprites or anything). And it also means you can avoid all the hard work.

But, like I said, what makes games work isn't what you see, it's what goes on behind the scenes. Projects with tons of contributors are often less successful than projects with one or two really dedicated spriters/scripters/mappers. Projects with lousy graphics can be great too; projects with great concept and graphics can be terrible. I'm a spriter, and yet I'd rather play something that's playable and well-thought-out but a little ugly than have an unplayable glitzfest.

nag nag nag cvetch cvetch nice sprites you've got there, Cupola's evolutions are nice but Cupola itself could use a little concept work; your eeveelutions aren't the best steel/poison ones I've seen, though... tbh they're rather monotonous. :/ Asideon's an edit and Oreon's shading could use work. Work more on the game though, and save the revamping for later.

Not to be a shmuck, but as far as my knowledge goes, Asideon is 100% scratch.

We don't have tons of contributors, we have about...4 or 5 people on staff, on a good day.

Cupola's meant to be rather plain, which would give the player initiative to evolve.

Again, our project is only as good as our game, so whatever happens...happens. I really hope that the game will turn out great, as we have a kick-as plot and some pretty good pokemon ideas. The ROM hacker said that he'd have a video up soon, but I can never tell, as he isn't online much.

To tell the truth, I agree wholeheartedly with your second paragraph there. The thing is, a pretty-not thought out game is bad, while an ugly- thought out game is good.

We want to be a pretty - thought out game. But none of my staff knows how to ROM hack except the ROM hacker...so we basically have all of our weight on him.

We already have an RP forum, but as I've realized, I don't have enough patience to run it. I'm just sorta having it go so we can test out our plot, and edit as we go.
