Crystal hack: Pokemon Lunatic Crystal v1.7

Should I add infinite Rare Candies or a Key Item that functions in the same way to skip grinding?

  • Yes, but the leveling system and the level curve is decent and it's not needed per se.

I'm working on a new version of Lunatic Crystal which will be by far and away the largest, and probably final update.

First of all, a little Quality of Life change, the EXP. Share has been improved and it no longer displays individual EXP gain for all Pokemon, instead it now displays the text pictured in the screenshot above, this makes grinding and all battles that much smoother.

I also introduced a new rival in Lyra, who will take the third starter that wasn't picked by neither you nor Silver and she will challenge you at various points in the story. So far I've managed to implement 3 battles for her and I have plans to give her 7 battles in total. She also has a brand new event where she obtains the starter.

Switch mode has now been removed from Lunatic Crystal, the default and only option is now Set Mode for an extra layer of difficulty. The only difference between important battles and generic trainers is now that you can't heal in important battles.

The linearity and progression of the story has also been slightly altered to accommodate the new mandatory battles, such as the Lyra fights. This comes in the form of new events such as Whitney in the Radio Tower. This is also an attempt to ensure that the player obtains all the important items and does not need to backtrack later. Including the Lyra fights in Johto, there will be around 8 extra mandatory fights for the player to take on. This is also meant to fill out Johto and make it feel like a complete region that can stand on its' own.

Talking about bosses, some have also seen changes to their roster to give more screentime to more Pokemon, as well as to make them more challenging. The rival teams have also seen big changes in order to make them more fitting for each character, as well as more challenging for each section of the game.

Just wanted to say, you're a madman.

With that out of the way, I'm barely getting into Pokemon rom hacks, and this one is one of the first I've tried.

The first one I played was PureRed and that one for sure gave me a hard time, up until the missingno cheat (which I did use by default because after playing Red since release I've done that glitch every play through since. So it's a habit and it did make the game that much easier.

Now for Lunatic Crystal. My god what a challenge. Hats off to you sir. Usually just playing the vanilla version of these games I can do it while falling asleep and still be on autopilot. Let's just say it took me longer than it should have just to get the first 2 badges.

Currently I am fighting the elite four with no chance of moving forward anytime soon (no money after using all my revives and hyper potions already) 😂

This game is a challenge but once you get the groove and the hang of it then you can blaze through it.

One thing I have noticed and it's just an observation and not a gripe is that only a handful of GameShark codes work for this hack. Don't know if that's for all hacks (since I'm new to the hack community) or just this one and you disabling them.

The ones I did test and got results for though is:

The Shiny encounter hack, the Pokemon encounter hack, and the Pokemart any item available to be bought hack. All others freeze up your game.

I don't know which version I am playing of this hack, but one glitch I have noticed is when you scroll too fast in the item bag you go past where it says close bag and then the game freezes. Again don't know if this has been patched already and I'm playing an older version.

In conclusion I will continue to play this hack due to it's difficulty and how long it will take me to beat the elite four and good work and good job to you 👍🏼

Hi, thanks for your kind words and I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the hack! Good luck with the rest of the game :)

Most of the GameShark cheat codes will not work on Pokemon Lunatic Crystal because of all the data changes that were implemented in this ROM, mostly due to the fact that I've added in a lot of events, expanded the bag size and added new functions and code. It all depends on how much the hack is different from vanilla in that regard, a hack with simple changes to the trainer teams, maps and encounters should have all the codes work with no issue, but hacks made in Dissasembly like mine will have that issue.

I assume you must be playing the current 1.6 version if you've downloaded the game here or on RomHacking, though there are sites which have an older version of my ROM. In the intro screen of v1.6 the current version is listed next to the year and the name of the creator. In any case, I'm currently working on an update and I haven't ran into this glitch on the new version. But this might be an emulator problem as well, are you playing on mGBA or are you using a different emulator?

I am playing v1.6 and I am using the Delta emulator on my iPhone (:

Any idea when you'll be releasing this updated version???

Probably around December at the earliest.

I have completed the main game content, a lot of extra battles have been added in, some extra QoL stuff as well and some extra post-game content. I have some other ideas that I would like to add like restoring some of Kanto's locations or updating the Battle Tower rosters and changing content there.

Right now I'm testing to see if there any glitches in the current build and most of the work I have left are the maps and the Battle Tower, I'm satisfied with the amount of bosses and the challenge the game presents.

Awesome. Can't wait.

Hey just wanted to say thanks for all your hard work, it's greatly appreciated. There's so many improvements and qualify of life changes. You've made one of my favorite games even better and I'm looking forward to future updates!

Happy new year everyone!

I wanted to post an update about my progress, along with some screenshots:

[PokeCommunity.com] Pokemon Lunatic Crystal v1.7[PokeCommunity.com] Pokemon Lunatic Crystal v1.7[PokeCommunity.com] Pokemon Lunatic Crystal v1.7

First of all, as promised, I have been working on restoring some of the more well known Kanto locations that were cut from the original Pokemon Crystal. Currently Lunatic Crystal features a restored Pewter Museum, but most importantly Viridian Forest and Cerulean Cave. All of those areas are as close as possible in terms of layout to the original games, with of course better Gen 2 graphics, so these should be a blast to go through. As a small teaser the post game encounter with Mewtwo will now take place in Cerulean Cave instead of Mount Silver.

[PokeCommunity.com] Pokemon Lunatic Crystal v1.7 [PokeCommunity.com] Pokemon Lunatic Crystal v1.7 [PokeCommunity.com] Pokemon Lunatic Crystal v1.7

The new update will also feature some new overworld trainers in areas that I feel were empty and where it was much needed and appropriate to have them. Examples include Rock Tunnel having 5 trainers to face, Jasmine having actual Gym Trainers, Ice Path featuring trainers amongst others. This mostly concerns Kanto, but there are some additions here and there in Johto. This will prove quite nice in providing extra challenge and EXP for the players.

[PokeCommunity.com] Pokemon Lunatic Crystal v1.7

I'm proud to announce that the "Reset Clock" function will no longer require any tedious button pressing in the Main Menu! After obtaining the Pokegear, this function becomes a pernament part of the starting Menu screen, you can access it at any moment and without any passwords, providing the player with a very quick and convenient way to change time. This is one of the best QoL additions and it will make completing the Pokedex and getting daily events that much smoother.

[PokeCommunity.com] Pokemon Lunatic Crystal v1.7[PokeCommunity.com] Pokemon Lunatic Crystal v1.7

Another addition are custom battle transitions for all 16 Gym Leaders! Each Leader's transition is represented by their individual Gym badge, which makes these battle that much more unique and important, plus it's very pleasing to look aesthetically.

These are currently the main things I've managed to implement since my previous progress post here. I'm currently playtesting the main story as well as checking all the new areas and events to make sure they work properly, but content-wise the main story will be stacked. The new rival has 6 mandatory battles, as well as a Post Game rematch, Silver and Eusine have an extra mandatory battle each, to name a few. Johto feels like a big complete region now. There have also been a few changes to the story progression (with a significant one coming in late game Johto) but I won't touch on them here.

Kanto has also had some important changes. It now features some extra events and checks that make the Gym challenge more linear, and to go along with it Kanto now features level caps! The 1st, 6th, 7th and 8th Gym Leaders are in set order, but a very exciting change comes in terms of Gyms 2-5 where the player is free to take the Gym Leaders in any order here, and their individual teams will scale depending on the amount of badges you have! This, along with new trainers and updated rosters, makes Kanto even harder than before!

The game is pretty much done in terms of main game content, I'm pretty content with the post game, but I might add a rematch or two before the new update is released. Depending on whether I want to add new areas or not, that part is pretty much complete too. The one thing left to do is the Battle Tower and I do plan a bit of an overhaul to say the least lol

I can't exactly give an estimate of when the update will come out since I've been busy with my university courses and I do have exams coming up, but I am happy to say that the most important parts of the update are done.

I wish there was an option to buy candy earlier at a low price to cut out the grind. Since the game seems to have level caps, this would be perfect for those who do challenges etc.
The hack seems perfect in many ways but it would be so nice to be able to level up the mons at any time without depending on EXP grind. I know there's candy scattered around the world but that doesn't help my friend to want to play cross stream challenge with me, because that bastard has gotten too used to games like Radical Red having one of the best grindless options. Ty for the hard work man!

Definitely interested in this! It reminds me of Pokemon Crystal Legacy, but different enough to be enticing! I may start a playthrough soon

Yeah, the most important bosses do have Level Caps, so in that sense easily available Rare Candies wouldn't be a bad idea, but at the same time there is the argument that a player could overlevel all the mid-bosses and generic trainers and decrease the challenge there.

That and my hack already offers a lot of improvements in regards to gaining EXP and there isn't any point, at any of my test runs where excessive grinding was needed (with EXP Share you're pretty much on par with all the bosses and mid-bosses) unless you really wanted to level up severly underleveled Pokemon for some of the later sections of the ROM. That, and there are candies available post Blue already. So it'd make that system null in a sense as well.

But I could be convinced to implement a leveling item if the demand is there, I think I will make it into a poll actually.

EDIT: There is only one poll allowed here, the other poll is here: https://strawpoll.com/YVyPvdQ31gN

Hi GetKosiorekt, I've been casual running V1.6 of your hack. The difficulty is fantastic, it's exactly what I was looking for and I feel it's the best way to play Johto. This is my first time playing gen 2 and I had a blast getting to Kanto. Can't wait to play the rest. Thank you!

I completely understand your point of view man. And thanks again for the awesome hack!!

Edit@ Wow, I didn't realize that people voted in the poll. I just realized it now. So happy to see a hack creator who pays attention to the players and tries to take their suggestions into account. Man, you've already won me over just by doing that. My idea behind the candy is to be able to test as many teams as possible without having to grind low-level mons until they match the level of the rest of the party. Btw, thanks again man!!

I'll be checking back here from time to time to see what's new.

Hey man I came back here to try to leave a new suggestion related to grindless. If you're planning to make this change to your official game, you could release an exclusive version with grindless. I think that way those who like and those who don't like grindless can benefit from your awesome hack.
