It has been so long since I have posted in this forum. This is my first serious hack undertaking since the GSC days. And to begin, I'd like to thank Hiroshi for getting me back into hacking and being so patient with all my stupid questions and blunders over MSN. Now! To the preview of my hack, Pokemon: Ominous Sky.

Last Update: 9:34 PM Sunday December 09, 2007
    • SINC section added. Data on the MegaCorp constructing this hack.
    • Icecap screenshots added! A new frosty peak and cave in the northern reaches of the first playable island!/list]

      SINC -< Shadow Inc. >-
What is "SINC?" SINC is Shadow Incorporated, my own organization that has many uses. It originated in a chain story based in the Pokemon world and has evolved to my own online company (though nothing legal...yet). It has many different uses including, but not limited to: Pokemon Hacks, Pokemon Fansites, Sprite Comics, Web Comics, and world domination. I am including a section about it in here, as according to the Team forum's rules I need three members to post a thread there (or so I read from them), this is SINC's only public project, and SINC needs help (and another, yet disclosed reason).

      Members
Leader - Shadow. AKA Rocket Seviper Shadow. AKA Basmothel Shadethorn.

Honorary Member - Hiroshi Sotomura (For general help and support, webmastery, random assistance, and past beta testing)

Recuiting - SINC currently has recruitment open for Graphic Designers. This includes concept artists, spriters, and tile set makers, or a combination of the three. Please PM me for details regarding recruitment.

      Projects
      • Pokemon - Ominous Sky - A FireRed hack further detailed in this thread. <Progress: See below>
      • RE-SINC - The revival of Shadow Inc. into its brand new life of being SINC. Many secrets await. <Progress: Conceptualization>
      • SINC Webhome - Website for all things SINC. <Progress: 0%>
And onto your regularly scheduled FireRed hack.

      Pokemon - Ominous Sky

      Story
On the northern archipelago known as the Grandel Islands begins the journey of an aspiring Pokemon Professor to-be. He visits the local Professor Argan to obtain his Pokedex, to record everything he finds on the varied landscapes of his home islands. He finds Argan's placed ransacked, and the Professor's new Pokedex stolen by a thug. Argan gives the fledgling a brand new Pokemon to track down the crook and return the stolen goods, but what our little scientists finds is a plot much larger than any simple robbery...

      Features (Updates indicated by tildas)
*Note: All of these features, and screenshots later on, are not final work and may change, be added to, or completely removed as the hack progresses to a complete project.*
      • Explore the brand new Grandel Archipelago with many lush and unique environments to explore.
      • Work as a Pokemon Scientist and delve into many mysteries of the Pokemon World. This includes the lack of gyms and badges, though the Elite Four are accepting anyone brave enough to challenge them. And do not count various boss fights out of the picture, yet, either.
      • Brand new evolutions for many returning Pokemon. Also, existing trade evolutions will be altered to no longer require such things.
      • Start with the National Pokedex once you retrieve it, no more waiting for after the Elite Four to catch your favorites. Also many Pokemon appear much earlier then they used to, allowing a new play experience as you can customize your team a lot earlier than in other installments.
      • Investigate the villains of the region in a brand new storyline of global proportions.
      • ~A starter unlike any others! Castform! Though rumors are that he may be able to evolve in this strange region...~

FAQ (Or rather, a means to prevent frequent questions)
Q: When will it be out?
A: Once it is finished. Not only do I want my work to be as flawless as possible, but I also have a quite busy schedule with work and schoolings (going for Game Design as well, so all my game based ideas aren't only for this hack, but also class work). Also I find myself redoing sections over and over to make them as good as possible.
Q: Are you making new tiles/tilesets/sprites/etc.?
A: Perhaps, but it is not a large concern of mine, at least in comparison to other elements of the hack. It is more of a finishing touch to me, something for once true game play is done. In other words, a hack with bad/standard graphics is playable, yet a hack with bad scripts and balance is not so playable. Oh and I suck at art so bad I can't make a straight line with Photoshop's line tool (well, not really, but you get the idea). Though see the next question if you'd like to help with this.
Q: Are you hiring helpers? / Wanna join my hack team?
A: Short answer: no. Long answer: I may take on a spriter or other graphic designer, but I am not joining any hacking teams or have any plans at the moment to have a true hack team (though this may change). Right now this hack is produced by me, with Hiroshi as support/general help, and a possible artist or two down the line.
      Q: I found a glitch!
A: When I release a playable version, there are bound to be glitches as humans make both programs and errors (sadly we can't choose just one…). Just report it in the thread, but if it is in the known glitches section, don't clog up the thread with reposts. Though there is no release yet, so no glitches yet (though if you see an error in a screenshot, feel free to point them out, though they are commonly outdated).

Well, this has been just a preview of a game early in development stages, but I hope you enjoyed and stick with me as this hack progresses. *Takes a bow.*

Hmm... Interesting... Have you changed any scripts yet?

Are you in the need of a reasonably good mapper? I could provide you with some of my past creations if need be.

I do like the story so far. Are ya planning to edit the tiles as well..?

I'll just sit around and wait for the updates. Happy hacking and hoping for a complete finished product. ;)
I was thinking of doing tiles. That may be done, but I have lower artistic skills, so that isn't a huge priority. I personally would like edited tiles in my game, but we'll see what I can do.

I have not edited scripts yet, as I said I just started. I have sculpted the first two places in the game, and will now begin scripting them, tossing out all the old ones.

And I am not really looking for any mappers, as map making and world design are my favorite elements to hacking and I like to do them personally (hey, I'm going to school for game design for that reason!). The only positions I may consider hiring aid for is an artist or two for, as mentioned earlier, tiles or sprites and the like.

Nice, i like it so far but you should really plan on changing the tiles or editing the palletes. Apart from that the whole hack looks awesome but bushes are used alot in your maps. Excessive use of bushes arent so good either.

Oy, I expect Snow Tiles on the double!

Great Looking hack, and I can't wait to see more

There will more than likely be new tiles sometime down the line but:
    1) It's not an entirely snow hack, just the beginning area and some more.
    2) Tiles don't seem such a high priority to me, when compared to actual gameplay elements such as scripts, battles, and story events. Not saying they aren't important, just not as important. Good graphics does not necessarily make a good game and vice versa.
    3) I am not a good artist, though I do suppose snow should be easy enough... Though I'd probably screw it up somewhere...

Im glad to see you are focusing on gameplay not just tiles like a lot of people do nowadays. I think that you might could do something a little more with the starter town as to me it still feels a lot like pallet town, but other than that it is off to a promising start. I will agree snow on normal tiles look a little odd at first, but hey tiles aren't as important as gameplay. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing where this goes. God speed.

    MOO

haha... cool it looks awesome, just, what is that snow thingy? that bugs me...

I have updated with a tad bit of information.

    • Starter unveiled in features.
    • FAQ added.
    • Most of the hack has been redone due to changing ideas and for scripting purposes. A few suggestions have also been taken in (IE: Snowflower seeming too bland of a starting town). Snowflower Town, Snowflower Path, Icicle Path, and a yet unnamed City have been mapped out with events being added in. Thus all the posted screenshots are outdated (minus wild Pokemon). New screenshots will be posted once scripting for the regions is at an acceptable level.

I would release screenshots of Icicle Path, but I want to make sure the map looks perfect. And I also have a small glitch to fix. But here's a spoiler of the wildlife there...

Ask Hiroshi why this Pokemon needed to be included.

For those of you with patience...

I have made another small update, adding screenshots of Icecap to the mix, and more importantly, I am officially now looking for artists to help with the hack. As I get more work (school and job) and put more things into the hack, I find myself with even less time to potentially worry about graphics, so I would like to hand the icing to another while I bake the cake.

This hack is progressing steadily, looks like your putting alot of effort into it.

About the graphics thing, I'm a good tiler (As alot of people know :P) and I can make graphics. So if you need any help, just ask me.

great ideas, starter as castform with evos? 'bout time coz frankly he was useless alone
you are a champion for disregarding trades in evolution:knockedou

This is pretty incredible, Shadow. It looks as if this is a showcase by Nintendo! xD
Yeah, it looks like this game was created by Nintendo.

Anyways, if you need any scripting or spriting, PM me up! ;)

Castform, as well as many other 'novelty' Pokemon are being buffed up in my hack, either by evolution or just stat/attack/etc. changes. I always felt that most cool Pokemon needed to be more competitive so even if they became part of a cookie cutter team, there'd be some variety among them due to their uniqueness (Spinda, anyone?).
And I see no point for trade evolutions in a hack. Hard enough to trade in real life, let alone on a computer or (with a flash drive) finding someone in real life with the same hacked version of Pokemon.

I've been trying my best to emulate Game Freak's style with this, while making changes to make it a new game and adding my own little touches. And I've been attempting to do Sakurai-style screenshot updates.

And I may take you up on that offer, at least with sprites. 'Specially since I'd like some sprites before the first ALPHA.
