Red hack: Pokemon PureRGB (QoL romhack) (Complete!) (New version just released Nov 13th 2024!)

I may GENTLY slot some new unimportant "things specific characters are involved in" into the story as I add more areas based on beta content to the game. However, this will be limited, and is planned to be possible to turn off. For example, I plan on making a new options page to turn off the Champ Arena and other new areas (simply won't be accessible visually unless you turn them back on) in the next release. This is so people who do not wish to play with the new content can turn it off mostly if they wish. There are some other areas I am planning on adding that probably will SLIGHTLY flesh out team rocket's operations as the game played out. But again...it will only be apparent if you engage with these new areas, and the game will seem the same as original if you avoid entering them or turn them off entirely.

The main feature for the next release is the moltres dungeon meant to be near cinnabar. This of course, since it makes moltres available a lot earlier, will be possible to turn off. Similarly, if you just avoid it and go to victory road, moltres will still be there if you haven't fought moltres in the new area yet.

I love the game. Having over 45 hours on it and completing the dex i can definitely say thats its such an amazing way to experience gen 1. The only bad thing imo would be the grinding until you can get more rare candies in cinnabar in a certain way. Some help on the mewtwo changing event would be great since i have no clue where im supposed to be despite the top secret item telling me. I went everywhere i thought its important, nothing.

Edit:omg i finally found the event. The area to put the item in is so hard to spot without looking at it.

If it makes you feel better I don't intend on putting anything as difficult to solve as the puzzles to enter the secret lab in other areas. This is just supposed to be one of the last places you go in the game and supposed to be hard to enter.

As for the "grinding"...the game was balanced around using 1 team of pokemon. It gives you a bunch of rare candies as you play through so you could maybe swap out a pokemon or two, but it's not really designed for raising a bunch of different pokemon as you play through the story. If you want to raise a bunch or catch em all, you can do it easily once you beat the game. Or do a lot of battles in the safari zone. Or...you have to start grinding.

So I started playing this in the evening and I am having an absolute blast. Red and Blue have always held a nostalgic space in my heart as a kid, especially since it was the first game lil me managed to finish. The 60 Fps feature is a god send, and I love how I can customize the sprites in the options menu. I see you mentioned that an update is on the way. Will it be compatible with the current release so I can carry over my save? Thank you!

Maybe. It depends on how much and what I change. It would take ages to make another release if I have to maintain save compatibility. Also I haven't started the next version yet. But I will eventually.

I will not add a "Caught Pokemon" indicator in battle. Why? It changes the feel of the game. You don't really have to ever look at the pokedex if this feature is introduced. Also, I think it's a hallmark of gen 1 to not have this feature and to memorize which pokemon you have caught already.
That gives me an idea! Consider this: What if you could look at the Pokedex during wild battles, but checking it wastes a turn or risks certain 'mons running away? (with a warning that checking it will waste a turn). This may not be possible to implement due to hardware limitations, but if it turns out to be possible it'd be a nice touch.

Doing a test playthrough of the new version now. Surprisingly few bugs have been encountered. I am 6 badges in so far.
EDIT: I am now fixing a couple of bugs after finishing the test playthrough.
Eager for this to drop so I can continue my playthrough (in the middle of Rocket Hideout right now)

I created an account just to congratulate the maker of this romhack. It feels like a updated RBG experience, the additions are perfectly placed around the world and the QOL modifications are awesome.

Today I've completed my Pokédex (which I've done less than 5 times both in official versions and ROM hacks/fan games in my 25-year active tenure with Pokémon) and got my certificate. It looks like an end for me on this one but if I return to the game, I will definitely keep that in mind. Thanks again for this masterpiece. I've taken a surprising visit to my childhood. I will definitely recommend your work to everyone!
I just downloaded this ROM Hack, and I'm gonna ask the dumb question. Can you complete the Pokedex in one version without trading with another?
