Wow, that's shocking for a League opening. And I remember back when BW077's rating was revealed, defenders of the BW saga did damage control and tried to blame the low rating on Golden Week. The funny thing is that several other episodes of the anime had also aired during Golden Week in the past and those still got higher ratings than that, so the BW077 rating was bad regardless of the holiday excuse. I wonder how people would defend the Kalos League opening episode's rating, though.

I can't really give the ratings for last week, since they haven't actually published them yet. I can tell you that they reaired the Hoopa movie on July 14, though, and based on the fact that it was absent from the ratings list, it had to do more poorly than a 3.0 (since that's what the number 10 spot, Shawn the Sheep, got).

Okay, they've finally posted the ratings for two weeks ago.

And XY127... actually managed to get a lead up, pretty impressive, it got fourth place. The ratings it got in itself, however, aren't exactly as impressive as one might think, as it's got a 3.4.

XY128's off the Top 10 list again, meaning it got even less than a 3.0 (since that's what Curious George, the number 10 spot, got).

Funny, the conclusion to the battle with Sawyer probably would have been something to see anyways, especially if Ash is to advance in the league, yet it didn't even attract enough people to make the Top 10.

BTW, anyone know exactly WHEN the ratings update? XY129 hasn't even been posted yet.

Wow not even the Ash vs Sawyer was enough to get into the Top 10 and got outrated by an episode of Curious George... it is odd how League episodes usually tend to rate well but this time around it's like Japanese viewers no longer give a damn about it. I did hear XY wasn't received well in Japan, but maybe a Sun & Moon saga could pick up the pace again.

Also, I don't know when the updates happen.

How can ppl dislike XY? It's a great saga. Besides, Maybe the ratings r low because many ppl, including me, watch the episodes online..

Not likely, because 1. Hulu and similar streaming services crashed and burned in Japan, and 2., even if they didn't, it's low-rated even regarding online viewership, especially compared to stuff like My Little Pony and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Even TVTropes acknowledged that, at best, it's more popular outside Japan than it is inside Japan.

Besides, I'm pretty sure online viewership wouldn't actually negatively affect the ratings. NCIS, NCIS Los Angeles, and NCIS New Orleans had very high ratings, as did the Simpsons (certainly they were far higher than Pokémon's ratings currently), and those actually ARE viewable online (heck, in the case of the first three, they're watchable on the CBS app).

So what if the current Pokémon anime isn't as loved in Japan compared to the west? The same applies with Zelda and Metroid (both aren't as popular and sell less in Japan but are extremely popular and sell more in the West), and yet you don't hear Nintendo pulling the plug on both series for not selling well within their home country. So why should TV Tokyo cancel the anime when the leaked concept art of the Alola starters already debunks that scenario when it showed doodle versions of Ash and Mallow (as the new female companion), followed by the after credits teaser from Movie 19 showcasing the Alola starters.

Because unlike Zelda and Metroid which still has quite a bit of a following in the West, the Pokémon Anime in the West also is barely even popular there. I only said it's more popular in America than in Japan, I never meant when I said that that it had NCIS-level ratings in the West, which IS what makes it worth being kept. That's the problem. And besides, did popularity REALLY stop the Mario, Zelda, Sonic, and Mega Man TV series from being cancelled? Did their cancellation also negatively impact the franchises they represented? No. So if they don't negatively impact their franchises by being cancelled, Pokémon's cancellation won't either.

Not to mention, usually, the Japanese cater to their own market over international markets. Take Dead or Alive Xtreme 3, for example: It didn't matter whether Europeans or Americans wanted the game, they kept it an Asian-based release, and the closest thing to a localized version for that game was the Hong Kong version. Not to mention they never even bothered to count the votes for the European and American-based votes regarding wallpapers, despite the fact that the point of releasing those wallpapers was to give the people a chance to decide who to vote for which girl will go on a vacation. They only counted the Japanese votes.

@Famon: Again that's not a blog, it's a conservative news site. And there have been plenty of movies and TV shows that actually got awards despite actually being quite terrible. You can't use awards as an indicator of whether a show or movie is actually well received, especially when awards right now are rather notorious for having been "bought" beforehand, or otherwise it's judged solely for whether it promoted a particular agenda rather than its actual content or whether the viewership actually liked it. And while 3.5 million is higher than 2.8 million, it's still considered very low ratings.

Japan DOES have Netflix, Amazon Video and Hulu. And on all three platforms the Pokémon anime is available for free.

Actually, Japan's streaming services don't exist anymore after their version of Hulu crashed and burned. Just ask IrregularHunterZ, he'll tell you. And even if they do actually sell just as well here in America, that still doesn't explain why even regarding online viewings, as Poke246 stated, Pokémon's viewership still stank. To put it in perspective, NCIS, NCIS New Orleans, heck, even NCIS Los Angeles gets extremely good viewership on TV DESPITE the existence of the CBS app.

On more relevant topics, XY129's ratings just came in. It barely made the Top 10 that week, ranking at 10 and having overall ratings of 3.0.

He doesn't know what he is talking about if he's saying that. Hulu Japan does still exist and even adds new episodes of XY & Z a day after they air on TV Tokyo.

If he didn't know what he was talking about, please explain why he even bothered talking about them. And he also definitely had knowledge on BandaiList among other things. And he certainly was knowledgeable enough on Japanese business affairs to know that Dragon Ball GT suffered partially because of its usage of J-POP songs.

No surprise it failed again, which definitely shows this is the worst rated league at least to Japanese viewers, which like you said the XY saga bombed. The only hope to win back the viewers is if the Sun & Moon saga can get better ratings when that starts sometime after the game release, and given no Gyms in Sun & Moon it could mean something fresh for the anime as well.

It made the number 8 slot... with a rating of 2.0.

I don't expect XY131 to be very highly rated, though, even if Ash DID beat Alain (which he obviously didn't), considering the opening of the League and the Sawyer battle conclusion never made the top 10.

That's very surprising, considering how much the fandom rioted over Alain's victory. Maybe it shows that Ash's final league battle really is the one the viewers pay most attention to.

Keep in mind Japan is still in its Obon travel season and has been since the beginning of the month. Many many people take this time to go visit family or ancestral graves so the rankings will reflect that. A lot of people won't be watching TV these weeks. It's not as huge as Golden Week but still a pretty big thing in Japan.

Rankings have definitely been dropping though, last I recall seeing big scores of 8.0 - 10.0 were during the days of DPPt. /:

So why did they even bother airing the league during this period of time instead of, I don't know, AFTER Obon travel season? It seems pretty stupid to air the league during a Japanese event as big as that.
