hey mods and admins how the hell are ya, just wanted to run this idea by you okay. there's obviously been a lot of changes to gen chat in an attempt to foster a more relaxed and chat-friendly environment. the elimination of the the dcc was a pretty good move, although for the brief spike in activity you guys got, there was a pretty equal decrease in post quality. meanwhile the member of the month threads have failed to encourage quality dialogue as evident by its low participation. tbh the motm threads are just too frequent and aimless for anyone to be bothered enough to care.

if you guys are into gimmicks like motm, then a post of the week thread could be a lot more successful imo. each week a handful of posts would be nominated by the mods or whatever, and then members can vote for their favorite each week. this would both inspire more quality posts and encourage pc's raging personalities to shine more fluently, in other words tap into our vast craving for attention. I mean who doesn't want a weekly shot at forum glory -- it's the entire premise of motm. except it's better.

post of the week is mad popular everywhere I've seen it. motm is cool but it's honestly a twice a year kind of thing

can't tell if srs or just rly good entry for potm

Yeah, I'd prefer this to motm since the categories are starting to.. be worn out over and over? But yeah.

Would the post of the week event be for all posts that are posted in general, or would there be like specific themes for them? ie. Pokemon-related posts, etc, etc.

that would be up to you cats, but generally I've seen it collect posts from the whole forum. that way it creates a wider interest and would probably help bring more members to the treehouse

if you make a button, a post should need like three noms from unique users (or some other pre-determined number) to actually count, or else people could start nominating everything @_@

edit: if a shitpost wins, then praise be the shitposter lol

So long as it's regulated in some way, I see this as a pretty good idea. I say that regulation would be important simply because things like this have potential to be misused. Features that inherit some form of automation are easily abused, the prime example being the reputation system. Users could easily rally together to get a particular post to the top of the ladder by each clicking the "Post of the Week" button. That post may very well be good, but it may also be the opposite, hurtful even.

There's also the issue of staff winning it continually for announcements, not a big deal but I think posts made by the individual should garner more attention than the post of the week being pinned to someone's modding announcement each week.

So my recommendation would be to have a moderated filter before actually announcing the winner. At the end of each week, a group of staff (perhaps the PR team) should filter through the top posts of the week. If the top post is genuinely well-written, without any foul play then it should be fine and go through. However, the staff should ensure this is the case, and if it's not then choose the next best post based on the most popular contenders for PotW for that week.

    please god

This would be an appropriate use of the PR team's resources. It wouldn't take very much time with our numbers (the reason the entire staff team shouldn't be involved if this were to undergo a moderation filter), and I believe that we're capable of being an unbias third party.

Would be wise to rotate users who win it, and the section it's relevant in each week. Perhaps even rotate the section that the event is focused on week to week, so that the entire forum makes use of the competition as opposed to just the more popular sections.

you guys are over complicating this just like motm. this could literally be as simple as eight different members nominating one post each and then a vote would take place at the end of the week. it's simple and it's fun and that's it. but if you guys wanna implement something more calculated then groovy, that would probably work

yes gen chat would accumulate most of the nominations, but that's the nature of it. gen chat has a broad function and the largest demographic and therefor appeals to the largest audience. but if you make a damn fine post anywhere then it should be nominated.

I donnu man I just feel that we'd be selling its potential short by assigning different sections weekly, almost like it would marginalize the collective interest members would have in it. post of the week should be exciting for every member every week cause who knows, you just might get nominated. and that's what would collectively inspire the entire forum to improve upon its post quality
