FireRed hack: Red & Blue G1S

With V6 now out, I will take a short break from adding new features until I can catch up on the chores I put off. I will still be making revised V6 patches for any major bugs found.
Empty party slot having garbled graphics is already fixed in the revised V6 patches I just pushed to the repository, so make sure to grab the latest copies!

So I got around to starting this, but must've been on the v5 update because I had the garbled party boxes. I updated to v6 and can confirm that the party box situation is resolved for both blue and red. One thing i did notice persisting between v5/v6 was, when throwing out your first pokemon vs a trainer (not wild pokemon), when it does the animation to slide the healthbar off screen, it does so with some funky gaps/visual oddities. It's pretty fast and hard to notice but does look weird. Otherwise this is really nice so far, thanks

Thank you for the report! I'll have to go frame by frame and see what the issue is, I haven't personally noticed that when playing.

I took a couple of screenshots using the latest v7 testing patch in mgba on w11, I saw on your git (normally I play on mgba core on retroarch on my anbernic rg34xxh so it's harder to get a screenshot), I have uploaded them below:

Oh, I understand now! In the vanilla game, the graphics for the arrow extend to the end of the screen and sort of fade out. I modified the tileset image but failed to account for animations using those tiles.

This is in my to-do list for V7 along with a few other oddities not yet tracked on GitLab, thank you for the screenshots!

I've just updated the V7 testing patches. If you want to continue using V7 early, the new patches should only improve things!

Hey, really love this romhack!
I just wanted to let you know though that currently both the Rev0 and Rev1 v7 testing patches for Leaf Green are actually turning Leaf Green into Red Version rather than Blue Version (at least as far as the title screen and default name choices go - not sure if this would be affecting the version exclusive pokemon too? I haven't played that far yet!) - see screenshots below!

Thanks for letting me know! My test playthrough is at the rival fight before the Indigo Plateau, so the full V7 release should be out in under a week. Check back in a few days and there might be new patches waiting!

Wow... I am so shocked and happy to see that this project exists. I could go on for hours about this. :)
I only have played the very beginning as of now, and noticed that the title screen still has Charizard's cry even though Charmander is on the title. (I was impressed to see Nidorino with the correct cry during Oak's intro) So I was just wondering if you were planning on changing the title screen cry, or maybe just use Charizard's sprite for consistency? small concern, it was just awkward to start things up and see that. (And considering the ludicrous amount of work you've put into this, I feel like this was just a small crumb that didn't get noticed lol)

The other thing I was just wondering about was if you were going to ever include the option to play as the girl, since this is a fire red and leaf green-based decomp. I know Red and Blue didn't have the choice of playing as a girl, so maybe that is why you removed it.

Lastly, I know you've mentioned replacing the audio, and was wondering if you have tried using that GB Player feature from other hacks like Fire Red Throwback to get the awesome 8-bit tunes into the game. The only downside I noticed with the GB Player, is that Pokémon cries and sound effects get very drowned out and overpowered by the 8-bit tunes to the point where you can only hear the music and not much else. Maybe you will be able to do it better. :)

Hello, thank you for replying!

The final goal is to have the scrolling Pokemon animation of the original games, I couldn't just leave the title screen alone so I made the current iteration as a sort of placeholder. I wasted way too much time measuring individual pixels so incorrect cries are definitely something I'll fix in the future!

Player gender selection was disabled on Nov 22, 2023. I have no issues with anybody making a custom version of G1S with features enabled/added, but my goal is authenticity outside of UI and glitches.

Throwback is sadly a binary hack, not a source mod, so any audio overhaul it has is utterly incompatible with modern projects. A user named Dertecraft actually volunteered to contribute audio overhauls months back but he seems to have vanished off the internet since then. If nobody gets to it first, I do plan on replicating the original audio myself!
My current task is move animation overhaul which is currently at 127 out of around 166 complete!
