It's not a noobish question at all. o__O;;

There's not really a set number, as far as I know. Post your name change idea, and one of the admins will let you know if it's acceptable.

Just a heads up, though -- if there's a large string of unbroken characters (ie: SammiTehWeirdPerson), chances are it won't be allowed, as it'll stretch part of the screen for the people who have usernames, avatars, and personal info displayed on the left side of the screen.
