It's people voicing their opinion, not so much tearing the games down. Difference of opinion is commonplace in society and the willingness to accept such opinion is sadly growing more and more limited with each passing day. I've been a Yellow fan my entire life but I can see the reasoning behind their opinion because there are only so many ways to play a particular Generation 1 game(especially if you are limited to 151 Pokemon. If you had over 700 at your disposal, then it wouldn't be so bad). Furthermore, Gen 1 lacks many of the modern features such as abilities, genders and held items while the end-game or post-game is pretty much catch Mewtwo and challenging Elite 4 over and over again(not the case in other games where you can go to an entirely different region, do Pokemon Contests if it tickles your fancy and start breeding Pokemon with unique attacks(like an Alolan Vulpix with Freeze Dry)). Heck you could try and do a play through with just shiny Pokemon(Granted that would be so difficult to pull off).
 
the problem with opinions too is how they are voiced and topic as well, I could go in and be like in my opinion everyone here should die a bloody death, but it would not make it right...or decent.
 
If you don't like the original and only like frlg, then I think you don't actually like Kanto-- that's fine if you don't, not everybody is going to like every region. However, frlg's claim to fame is pretty much that it just looks and runs like Ruby and Sapphire. This is more of an endorsement of the third generation ovall, then thr region of Kanto.

What frlg does not do is capture the zeitgeist of the originals. It also completely ignored the entire final installment of the first generation unlike the Johto remake HGSS. Sure, a lot us would have also liked to have seen Kris again, but HGSS still incorporated much of the progress made from Crystal like the event Dratini from Clair's grandpa, Eusine and an increased role for Suicune, hidden rooms and puzzles at the ruins of Alph, Buena's password. Frlg on the other hand just dropped Yellow altogether, which is a slap in the face to those of us who cared about Kanto because Yellow is part of its legacy. Many people would rightly be upside if a remake of a Sinnoh game completely scrapped Platinum, even if it ran better than the ds game did.

The gen 1 games were also very ambitious for the time, they were not able to complete everything due space limitations, but Frlg I just see as a money grab that made no attempt to salvage any of the omitted content and truly offer the full picture of what Kanto was meant to be. Was the battle with Prof Oak in there? No. Did they at last include the female rival who would have originally appeared in the story along with Blue? No. Did it finally introduce planned Pokemon who were unreleased like the dragon with the signature move fiery breath? No.

Frlg literally rehashed tracks from Johto and slopped them over some random islands that they did not even bother to give names to 1, 2, 3 island? Then they said that this was our complete experience. Something that had nothing to do with the original games, and in my eyes was just very uninteresting and undeveloped. Is this all I'm getting in return? Sevii, some more menu options, fixed bugs? Very disappointing game.

Frlg is neither the Kanto that I remember nor the Kanto that might have been. This game just seems lacking in love for the originals, Its more of an anti-Kanto game.

Those who said that they can't replay R/B/Y only said that they can't replay R/B/Y and gave their reasons. None of them said anything that could be seen as rude. Saying that R/B/Y are someone's least favorite Pokemon games is not at all on the same level as "these games are crap" or "go die a bloody death."

That said, I'm another person who finds it difficult to go back to the Generation 1 games. Particularly Red and Blue. Yellow was all right to get through, but Red and Blue can be difficult to play. The mechanics bother me (Wrap!) and the graphics can get tiresome to look at. They're glitchy as well.

If you don't like the original and only like frlg, then I think you don't actually like Kanto-- that's fine if you don't

I like Kanto just fine. I also like FR/LG because those games allow me to explore Kanto with more enjoyment than I get while playing Blue or Yellow.
 
I agree that FRLG look too bright and the music remixes leave a lot to be desired. I'd recommend Red++ for anyone who wants updated mechanics while keeping the original games' charm in tact.

I'm tempted to replay Yellow. It's been 18 years.

I like Kanto just fine. I also like FR/LG because those games allow me to explore Kanto with more enjoyment than I get while playing Blue or Yellow.

Hi, since you quoted me I wanted to respond to this by simply pointing out the whole statement I made. The next sentence I wrote was that frlg's claim to fame is that it looks and runs like Ruby and Sapphire. Generally, the arguements I have heard in favor of frlg over rby are based on its resemblance to RSE. I don't think this part of my comment is actually contradicting what you have said so far. The reasons you named for liking the frlg better than the originals such as the graphics and mechanics can be attributed directly to the Hoenn region games. I would say that if you don't get much enjoyment out of the originals and have a strong preference for FRLG then it is not actually Kanto that you are responding to, what you seem to most value is that it runs like RSE. Again, if you like frlg then good for you, I'm cool with that. But I'm also mindful of the fact that the story that makes FRLG is still there in RBY. Frlg has a tendency to water Kanto down, but it ultimately does not add that much new content compared to other remakes like HGSS or ORAS. If the originals are barely playable, but the remakes are very to enjoyable to the same gamer then I do question whether it is actually the world of Kanto that the player is enjoying if the originals have lost most of their worth. Again, this is not a criticism, just an observation.
 
Honestly, the first time i ever knowed the existence of pokémon red, blue and yellow, was in 2011 or 2012 or 2013 by some random youtube gameplay video, then i downloaded visual boy advance and the roms of pokemon r/b/y and i've just had some fun with it.
But i never beated it.
So my save game is not ended yet, i have all the badges but i know there is my rival and the elite 4 too, and a team that is
Zena (a nidoqueen level 46)
Kyle (a fearow level 46)
Dylan (a nidoking level 46)
Benny (a blastoise level 46)
Connor (a raticate level 46)
and Smokeweeds (a vileplume level 25), i've never bothered training it because i only needed him because of cut)
And now i am in the indigo plateau, i don't think i will beat the elite four and my rival with a team that is like underleveled like that, i think i will train them until 55 or 58 idk.
(Sorry for the long and off-topic comment but i saw the need to write all of this)
PS: I do winned battles with Smokeweeds, but are just luck.

I've beaten Pokemon Red over 400 times, but that's because I do speedruns of the game. I've put in over 200 hours so not quite as much as I've spent in competitive battles with X/Y, but still I love replaying Red. There's so much nostalgia in Kanto for me, just walking through Viridian Forest and visiting the old Gym Leaders is such a fulfilling experience to me.

When it comes to actual gameplay I love how fast Pokemon Red is compared to the other games. The newer generations, while amazing, are slowed down by their animations and tutorials. There's also few barriers to moving around the Kanto region. You can really make your way around without doing lengthy quests or dialogue sessions with npcs. The only significant obstacles being Snorlax and the Saffron City guards.

whoa shit, really?

that's a LOT of times to beat a game, even if you do speedruns

....it sounds like a lot to me anyway, the most amount of times I've ever cleared any game iirc is ~15, and most games have only ever gotten to half of that for me
 
i love doing randomized nuzlocke runs on red.
No matter how dated it may seem now Red version is still my favourite pokemon game and i still love the graphic style and all so playing it with all other generations of pokemon added in gives it tons of replay value for me
 
Rather than creating a whole new thread, I figure I?d start some discussion on RBY by asking the following question: Does LGP/LGE incentivize you to play these games all over again? For me, Yellow version is all I have but if I had options, the new games would encourage me to play Yellow if only to familiarize myself with the region, where Pokemon are likely to be found(they could change that up big time in Lets GO games) and what Pokemon to key on when preparing for the next Gym or Gyms later on.

So people answering the question stating they don't replay the games are bringing down the thread?

I myself LOVED the games as a kid. But I have not revisited them in almost 20 years. I took a hiatus from pokemon all together in that time and now have a massive backlog of games to get through. I like to think I will give red or blue a replay at some stage if I find the time. I never really got into yellow. I even traded my pikachu to red, evolved him, then traded him back to see what would happen lol.

I have revisited Pok?mon Blue twice since my original play through and I don?t regret it. Graphics and animations mean nothing to me, especially when your playing a game like Pok?mon where replayability is extremely present.
 
Replay value for Gen I is more friendly than the handholding burden that is Gen VII, even if I like the characters and Pok?mon of the latter.

VisionOfMilotic made a lot of great points about what makes Kanto memorable and unique.

As for me, even though I may derail the discussion; while I am fond of various evil team leaders like Ghetsis, Archie, and Lysandre, there is no beating Giovanni and Team Rocket, who are responsible for fuelling a lot of grief and despair we had to resolve in Kanto.

Team Rocket in general is a great villain team, despite their shortcomings. There will never be another evil team like them, since we can't have casinos, drugs, illegal trafficking, whips, and explicit details of murder in the games anymore.

They are unique in the sense that they don't spend the whole game trying to awaken a Legendary, and speaking of Legendaries, they did live up to their titles of being sacred, since you have to search every cranny and nook, as well as speaking to several citizens to learn that there are Pok?mon only spoken of in legends, and you'd have to explore four specific dungeons essentially at the end of your adventure to find out if they do exist. That would be one huge debate I've pretty much opened the floodgates for, in hindsight, but I feel like that voice had to be spoken here.

When it comes to Pok?mon, both RBY and FRLG have their perks.

I can understand where FRLG fell short, but to me, Abilities and new movesets have helped to some extent by giving you more options, like Omanyte having Rain Dance and Swift Swim, which is very handy to have provided that you picked the Helix Fossil.

Gen I may be awkward at some points, but once you defeat Lt. Surge and have done some thorough exploration, you have some great options.

I replay R/B/Y a lot, but when I play it normally I get bored after a little bit.
 
The kanto games have good chalanging battles throughout the game so restarting them with different teams is probably very fun :3

Maybe i'll restart my yellow download sometime after I win it the first time (....i got pretty lazy about playing it after i got stuck at synth co. O_o; )
