Chit-Chat: ROM Hacking Daily Chit Chat

All of The above

Hey, it's your average double poster FBI here. I wanted to know who would be interested in the following:

1) Graphics tutorial for the GBA
2) Graphics scripting system
3) Tutorial Tips and tricks for hacking

Pick one please, and if you're not interested in either let me know. I'm trying to gauge interest and see which one I'd want to do too based on usage population.

Number two!

I'm really well, what are you looking forward to most about your return to ROM Hacking?

Actually getting back to working on a hack! I never did like scripting and technical stuff much focused mainly on the visuals but who knows I did some programming class this sem in uni maybe it helped me

Usually, basic scripting and technical stuff is pretty simple so you should have no trouble with it if you follow the tutorials available, especially if you have some programming experience. Good luck with your hack!

hello community

hello!

i'll be honest
i find that hacks with good graphics receive practically automatic hype even though they may possibly not be too stellar in other areas. first impressions go a lon way, then?

I always find 'good graphics' subjective in these situations too :P

I've got a fun question, what was the name of the first hack you created?

Mine was Pokemon Crushing Smoke. I have no idea what smoke is supposed to crush, but it sounded cool to me on long long time ago day. Did you guys have equally random names? What were they? :D

Early in 2010 I really wanted to make a hack called Pokemon White. Thank goodness it wasn't approved because it was embarrassingly bad. Plus they announced the real White version just like a month after I started work on it too.

pokémon emerald world
never even submitted anything. good thing as well; it was just a whole bunch of maps recreated in pokémon emerald from dppt/bw2

First name I came up with was Pokémon Piercing Wind because I liked how it sounded, though I ended up renaming it to Liquid Ocean for reasons. Back in the day you HAD to have two words.

Was anyone here into RPG Maker 2000/2003 before ROM hacking?

Myself and a couple of friends had a fairly ambitious game planned, set on a world consisting of a few islands bordered by impassable waterfalls. Part of the conclusion would have been that the waterfalls actually went down to an even larger ocean, and that other waterfall-bound islands probably existed far away, like discovering that the Earth is only one terrestrial planet among many. Basically setup for a potential sequel.

Like so many RM2K projects, we never got beyond a half-hour demo release, although it was fun designing the world map, sprites, weapons, etc. And at one point I was tired of RPG Maker's bad algorithm for "make an NPC walk towards the player" and tried implementing A* search, which in retrospect was a terrible idea given the lack of actual data structures. (RPG Maker XP, with its scriptable Ruby support, would have been a better choice, if it had existed at the time.)
