1st Gen Should I start new saves on R/B/Y carts at this point? Or get the 3DS versions?

First I apologise if this is in the wrong place, as this concerns the 3DS versions aswell as the original on the Gameboy.

So, for the first time I managed to gather the original Red, Blue, Yellow, Stadium, and Gold, Silver and Crystal. Thing is, I never started them.
Now, the 3Ds versions come along and now they can apparently even be taken to Sun and Moon - not trapped forever in one game.
So I'm not sure what to do. I wanted to use my teams on Stadium, and send all the Kanto Pokemon to G/S/C, but they battery in each could go in an instant and take away all that work. I also wanted the original experiance of the 1st two generations, but not if it can just be lost so easily over old batterys >_<

    Long story short:
Pros of playing actual cartridges: Trading between all 6 games, and Stadium and Stadium 2
Already own all original versions, cables, and 2 GBC's and love using the GBC

Cons: All Pokemon trapped within gen 1 or 2, battery can go any time in any of them and don't trust replacement jobs before starting the games

Pros of 3Ds versions: Saves are pretty much safe, and all the Pokemon can be transfered to 7th gen
Cons of 3Ds versions: Not being able to fully enjoy the Stadium-to-R/B/Y gameplay, or the orignal feel of the GB.
Can't being a full dex of Kanto Pokemon to Gold/Silver/Crystal/Stadium 2, which can still have dead batteries and there goes all that work of 6 games...

I'm just getting new replacement battery saves for all my cartridges. The only problem I have is that Gold, silver and crystal will only last 7-10 years.

But My old RBY saves are still working, they seem to last forever but I'm still getting new batteries in them so that the next 20 years I don't have to worry about them. I found a good guy in leicester to do them for me.

I'm just not a fan of the 3DS, I just stick with my GBA to play all the games from red to fire red. The nostalgic feel is just something I can't give up.

You can use third party hardware to backup your cartridge saves to your computer and load them into a hacked 3DS to be used with the eShop versions. That's what I plan on doing, as I have a living Pokedex sitting in Stadium 2. As far as I know, if you put your cartridge Pokemon into Stadium or Stadium 2's boxes, they'll be safe forever.

I'm personally doing both, haha. I like the ability to use the Stadium games for physical cartridges, but I also like that I don't have to worry about my save getting deleted from a dead battery and I'll be able to send my Pokemon to Sun and Moon when those come out later this year. So I mean, if you were already going to be playing multiple games on your GameBoy, might as well play the 3DS version and get some Pokemon ready for Sun and Moon. :P

How about you play the physical games now and put your teams on Stadium and then when Sun and Moon get closed to release, then download the games off the eShop so that you can send them over then?

I might get new battery replacements put in them before I start a new save on them :) And I agree, I still perfer the GBA (especially the SP) to the DS. I always take my time when playing a game through a Gameboy system, the DS gets heavy after a while XD

I don't use any kind of 3rd party things with my games, but I might atleast back up the cartridges if I have to reload them when it goes. But the Stadium idea sounds aweome, I had no idea it could actually hold Pokemon like boxes :D Thanks for the ideas!

Untill this thread I had no idea Stadium could actually hold Pokemon XD I think I'll defnitely be using that, as playing Stadium with my teams is a big reason I wanted to play the original games anyway :D

I don't know if the teams are saved onto Stadium per se, so you might want to test it with different cartridges or something and see. I actually just started using the transfer pak with Stadium only last year. Never had one until recently. So yeah, definitely test that first, cause I'm not sure it exactly saves the teams you send over or what. I know in Colosseum, if you link up your GBA game to use a team for Battle Mode from there, it saves it until you try to send a different team. But that's two generations later so. :s

I think the 3DS versions are better, especially that it's possible to transfer your saves from the original carts to 3DS. As for Pokemon Stadium support, it's unknown it will make it on the Virtual Console yet and I think there will be a possibility.

Plus, you can transfer your Pokemon from the 3DS versions to the new Sun/Moon versions.

If you really like the feel of playing on the old Gameboys then I say replace all your batteries that way you won't have to worry about them for the next 10+ years. And then when that time starts getting close you can just transfer all your Pokemon to one cartridge and replace the battery, then transfer them back. That way you never have to worry about losing them. Sounds like a hassle, but you only have to do it once a decade. Or you could use a third party backup like others said.

I like the idea of cost efficiency and the freedom to play at any time you wish with the VC route:
    - you're not buying AA batteries on a monthly basis, worrying about cartridge dust, worrying about cart batteries dying, etc.
    - the 3ds has a backlight for night time usage (the handhelds before the SP and DS are a pain to see: too bright a light source and the glare obscures your vision, too dark and you're straining your eyes)
    - unless you have an old TV, the 8, 16, and 64 bit graphics probably won't be appealing to the eye as it's stretched out on a big screen with HD (I mean, I'm finding that my PS2 games aren't aging gracefully as TVs get more advanced in picture - graphics certainly aren't everything, but can hinder enjoyability).
    - If you want to transfer to Moon/Sun without having to hack and perform workarounds with save file duplication, you have the freedom to (we'll see... Nintendo hasn't said whether or not Poke Bank would be required).

It's up to you, really. If you have the money to invest in a longtime commitment to keep the games running and the systems in use, go ahead. I just think that when you have the option of convenience, you might as well take it rather than rely on hardware that got replaced for good reason.
