Skill Level & Skill Points

Each Battle Pokémon starts off with a Skill Level of 1 and completing battles raises the level to a maximum of 100.

The player can decide whether to allocate Skill Points to Attack, Defence, Synergy or Strategy.

Attack: Boosts attack and increases the amount of damage you deal.
Defence: Boosts defence and decreases the amount of damage you take.
Synergy: Increases the duration of Synergy Burst and increases the boost you get to attack and defence.
Strategy: Shortens the charging time for your Support Gauge and enhances support effects.

Skill Level use is compulsory in Ferrum League matches but optional in Single Battles and Local Battles. At present Skill Levels are not taken into account in when playing online.

What are your thoughts on Skill Levels? How are you distributing your Skill Points? How much of a difference do you think it makes? Are you glad they don't apply online or do you think it wastes your effort?

Right now my Pikachu Libre is Skill Level 59 with 25 in Attack, 17 in Defence and 10 each in Synergy and Strategy.

I don't really know if I should balance it out a bit or put more into one stat than another, I haven't really noticed that much of a difference whilst levelling up. I could experiment but I'm lazy... Maybe one rainy day...

Skill Levels are actually used in Ranked Matches. It's not overtly apparent in the lower levels, but as you near SLv. 100 for your Pokemon, you can potentially see a 10% damage increase with Attack 100. Someone calculated that Lucario takes 8% less damage with Defence 100, the numbers should be similar for the other mons, being variable within the range of 5% - 10%. So, yeah. Objectively, a SLv. 100 Lucario is going to be statistically better than a SLv. 1 Lucario in online play.

About the Strategy stat, it does NOT (even though it says it does, lol) reduce the cooldown on your support Pokemon, it does however increase the damage. Upwards to twenty extra points of damage at Strategy 100 even.

If this is the case, balance skill points spreads are probably not recommended. Might as well go all in one stat. Attack is probably the safest investment, or if you're Gengar, Synergy is also a viable choice.

In short, I'm not exactly thrilled at seeing them being used online. Granted, the differences only become notable at SLv. 100, but this is a fighting game, variability is the one thing that should never be a factor. Limiting it to Friendly Matches, with the ability toggle it on and off, is ideal.

Yeah, it does seem weird to me that there's a lack of choice for it in Ranked. Also annoying if you want to jump in with a new character you haven't used much yet. At least the difference isn't huge even at level 100, but it would still have some effect towards the outcome of the odd match.

Otherwise I like the idea of it, a mild rpg-leveling element thrown in is neat. Fits with the whole Pokemon theme as well!

That's really interesting. How do people come up with the math so quick! I think I'll change my allocations based on what you said.

I haven't ventured into Ranked Matches yet, it'll be interesting to see how they differ from Friendly Matches.

I guess it kinda makes sense to use Skill in Ranked as it rewards you for the effort you've put in, though would a level playing field be better? I guess once everyone's played a lot it'll balance out anyways. I like that you can go into a Friendly without worrying about that though.

Wow. A Pokémon needs to climb all the way to SLv. 100 to see a paltry 10% bonus...?! :)

Oh, is that how they work? My Blaziken is Skill Lv. 80 with 25-30 in Attack, Defense, and Synergy all about even. Now I know how little all those really mean... Time to go reconsider what I want out of my skill points, then. But... I have no idea what to change them to. I don't feel like I particularly need any one stat, and Blaziken is Balance type after all... Decisions, decisions.

Whoop! Got Pikachu Libre to Lv. 100 last night! Experimenting with 61 in Attack and 40 in Defence. I did have it split between Attack and Synergy but I'm struggling to get higher than the 60s in the Chroma League so thought I'd see if this helps any. Please let it help!

I got Garchomp up to level 100 the other day. Kinda just spread them out evenly so it ended up being 25/25/25/24.

I'm glad it's just a 10% at max bonus really. I'd much rather have my matches be decided on player skill than SLevel builds and such, especially given that this game seems (I could be wrong about this) to have much less emphasis on MU and the character select screen and stage selection than Smash or something.
