Hey guys, how are you doing?

I'd like ask you for a piece of advice.

I've just finished watching the seasons corresponding to the Generation 4 of the anime (D&P). I've never watched the seasons of Generation 5 and some people have told me to skip them and go directly for Generation 6' seasons. They say Generation 5 episodes are by far the worst.

What do you think, are they that bad?

You should watch them if you want to watch them. Reviews mean nothing.

They're certainly jarring after DP, especially with Ash's incarnation. But they have their good moments too and does stuff that XY only wished it had done.

If you don't feel like watching it after a while, at least watch the episodes with Alexa in and Dawn (she returns). They help to set up Kalos as well as being back a fan favourite.

Even though Black & White was arguably the worst season so far, it does have a few good points.

In general, the art has evolved like each Generation and Team Rocket actually becomes less goofy. And Axew.

Can't add much more positive about it.
Won't say it's good, but I wouldn't call it bad either.

Can someone make a list of recommended episodes for BW? I gave up on it about 20 episodes in because it was just so bad. The only episode of it I watched besides that was the Charizard reunion one.

The N episode were probably the best part of the series, so it may be worth a try.

I think it begins around the 109th episode or so and is about 14 episodes.
Afterwards you get a filler season, of which the only episodes worth a watch are Oak's Rotom episode and the Alexa episodes, I guess.

Gen 5 season being the worst depends on the people who you are talking to. A lot of people hate because it feels like Ash reverts to is noob days, which in my opinion, he doesn't, but does have moments that it will happen. Hell, the really put effort in to Ash making mistakes that we make in the games. Some in which we still may make. But most of these are because he gets over excited or feels that he is invincible similar to Kanto and Johto.

Gen 5, has a ton of battling. It really defines the pokemon games and some of the arcs are by far the best. I think you should give it a try.

Gen 5 is what got me back into pokemon. If not for Gen 5, I wouldn't be watching pokemon still today.

Personally, this was the first generation where I loved the games but absolutely hated the accompanying anime saga.

This series attempted to be a reboot by reverting Ash back into a noob and not showing strategy in battle, to doing even the most questionable decisions it even made his companions feel like he was doing a strategy they knew wasn't right.

It got especially bad around the Nimbasa Gym where Ash planned to defeat Elesa with just his Palpitoad. It did easily defeat her Zebstrika, but got taken out by her second Pokemon, Emolga. Ash didn't expect Palpitoad to fall so early, he had to run out of the Gym mid-match just to get his second and third team members - which ended up being Snivy and Pikachu. Snivy fell to Emolga as well, leaving Pikachu to take it out and face Elesa's final Pokemon alone. Said final Pokemon for Elesa was Tynamo, which I view as a complete joke since it only gets four weak moves until it evolves yet somehow she trained hers to be a speed demon and put up a real challenge to Pikachu.

And then there's the resident Ash companions - Iris and Cilan. I found Cilan okay to deal with since he does have his comedy moments, but Iris was definitely a different story to me. She basically acted like a bully to Ash, with her signature "what a kid" remarks, making her feel like she's superior to Ash without even knowing a lot about his previous adventures. I am heavily against bullying (I have autism, which made me prone to being picked on) and having a so-called "friend" of Ash be so mean to him like that was definitely promoting the wrong message to the target audience. That's why Iris is my most hated Ash companion to date.

Then there was Ash's Unova team - a YouTuber named HDvee recently declared it was Ash's worst regional team, and he does have a good point. The Unova team had barely any evolutions and most of the team members that did evolve barely got screentime, mostly being shoved aside in favour of the trio that was Snivy, Pignite and Oshawott.

And finally, there's that controversial result at the Unova League against Cameron, a total noob who only brought in five Pokemon into a 6v6 match, and even thought the league was taking place in Johto. Ash did get an early start on Cameron but then that jerk's Riolu evolves into Lucario and destroys Ash. Seeing a trainer like Cameron beat Ash, and you have yourself one of the worst writing ever regarding a Pokemon league. The Kalos league result was known for splitting the fanbase, but Sinnoh and Unova was when leagues really showed the writing staff and their controversial decisions.

And finally, this series ends with a pointless filler arc known as Decolore Islands. Don't even bother with it.

Basically, in a nutshell, if you hate dorky Ash, controversial writing decisions, bad team handling and horribly written companions in general, I recommend avoiding the BW series altogether.

I also found Team Rocket being darker and more serious to be a big issue. It just didn't work. The comic relief they provided was no longer there and there was nothing that filled the void. That along with Ash being pretty much reset and Iris just really brought things down. The series having a trashbag Pokémon felt like a metaphor.

Regarding Team Rocket, the serious attitude they took on in BW was hated by the Japanese viewers (remember that Japan has a huge liking towards comedic formats) and that was why they got reverted as of XY.

I skipped the majority of BW, I only watched a few important episodes, (the first 3, the Dawn cameo, the pokemon league, and the last 2 episodes).

I'd say it honestly depends on why you're watching the show. If you're watching for entertainment, then I would definitely skip most of BW. If you're watching for story, then you may as well skip the whole series bar a few episodes.

Considering the anime has no real story that links all the series together, there is literally almost no point watching BW unless you enjoy it. But you should watch the first few episodes and then decide.

But be warned, even the important episodes are boring.

Ok, thank you so much for your answers.

I thik I'm gonna give it a shot. Or at least I'll watch the most significant episodes if I see it becomes too boring.

    Best.
