Ok, so I should explain this. I'm pretty sure several of you have played at least one of the games, and when you wake up in your house, you are usually confronted by your mother as soon as you walk downstairs.

Now, the only time I remember a father being introduced in the plot was with Hoenn, the 5th Gym Leader being your father (it was the 5th one, right?), and in the 5th Gen games Black and White. However, even then it isn't you with the father, instead Bianca having one.

So, tell me, what happened to YOUR dad? Or you can discuss about the situation as a whole. Why do you think they have left fathers out of the games? Do you think they should change it?

Feel free to speak your opinion c: <3

(PS: I really hope I wasn't the only person who noticed this...)

I probably noticed this the first time I turned my game on. XD

No idea why they would leave out the dads in the game, but I believe they are just away for reasons (business, traveling, etc). In Gen 1 and FRLG the player mentions the dad buying him something, so the player is aware of his dad.. No one say Red's dad is Giovanni. >.<

For the other games, no idea ..

I always thought it was a little joke about the high divorce rate. o_O

    ^ LOL!
I noticed that but I didn't mind it much, I thought they don't want to put a dad because they have no job for him LOL, I mean the mom gives you different stuff throughout the game but what would your dad do? they don't bother put useless characters I believe.
notice that no one has sisters and bros except in Hoenn too
but it's sad, I mean what's so hard about adding an in-game dad that does nothing? =[

I guess it was done like that so they can relate the main game characters to Ash in the anime? That's the only thing that comes to my mind, actually.

I think that the dad isn't present in the games other than R/S/E because he's out on his own journey. (someone can probably expand on this)

In the first gen, the rival does have a sister?

The anime was created after the game, and was based on the games. So that cannot be the case.

I have noticed that before; this isn't the first time I have read a discussion about Ash's father or the protagonist's father.
I always thought the probably never put the dads in the game to make the player kinda assume that their dads are great pokemon trainers or something.
As for Ash, I thought his parents never married =_=.

    I think that he either:

    a.) Passed away
    b.) Parents got a divorce

But to sound more positive, the father is probably a very busy business man whereas his job requires him to stay away from home for a long period of time

    :t354:TG

My theory is that the character's dad is doing time in prison for wire fraud, embezzlement, and money laundering.

Or they went off Pokemon training and never bothered to return home. One or the other. But I'm kinda partial to my fraud theory myself.

Considering a lot of the stereotypes in the games.

Dad is away working so that the mother can live at home and do nothing but stay in the kitchen. >.> Please tell me someone noticed the Mom in the kitchen stereotype other than me.

    Either:
    a. dead
    b. divorced
    c. a trainer on a journey
    d. overseas on a job
    e. hiding in the closet from 'mom'
    f. away on job somewhere :/

I think it's good to have a main character only living with their mom until they start their Pokemon Adventure. I actually live with my single mom in real life.

The only mention about Ash's dad that I remember was in the second episode. Ash calls his mom to tell her that he arrived in Viridian City and she said something along the lines of, "You got there faster than your father did on his journey."

They were never 'together'. He left when he discovered Mom was pregnant. He doesn't pay maintenance or have any real involvement with his child so Mom doesn't particularly like to talk about him.

Or maybe the adventure is the just the protagonist's mission to finally find their father.

Professor oak knocked up my mother some years ago when she was his 16 year old intern, and he was a handsome ambitious 50ish year old lady killer. thats how i made sense of it in second grade

    Silver's dad is Giovonni.

    Single Parent Rule
RPG characters with two living parents are almost unheard of. As a general rule, male characters will only have a mother, and female characters will only have a father. The missing parent either vanished mysteriously and traumatically several years ago or is never referred to at all. Frequently the main character's surviving parent will also meet an awkward end just after the story begins, thus freeing him of inconvenient filial obligations.

Straight outta the grand list itself.

In Gen V if you talk to your mom randomly she says that she met your father while he was on his journey. So I get the feeling that it was kind of a one-night stand, whether or not he promised to come back someday still being decided. They met, hooked up, she got pregnant, he either bolted or said "I'll come help take care of the kid when I finish my journey" and then never did. Either way, I feel like he has a serious case of wanderlust so he won't be back anytime soon.

i've always assumed i was a test tube baby and my mom just didn't want to bother with men. i don't blame her. or she "went there" with a pokemon...which would explain my tail. "birth defect," oh bologna
