Gen 3 introduced double battles, where you and another trainer could battle two on two. This became a staple in the Pokemon franchise, but it also led the way to other more gimmicky styles of trainer battle.

Gen 5 had the Triple and Rotation battles and Gen 6 had sky battles and inverse battles.

Which special battle type is your favorite/ least favorite and why? Do you like having these extra battle types or do you think they're too gimmicky?

I think inverse battles were a pretty cool concept, so I think that one is my favorite. I like seeing Game Freak try new battle styles to freshen things up a bit. Personally though, I think the Double Battle is the best in terms of longevity. It's been in every game since they were introduced and as far as I know, the other ones have mostly stayed to their respective generation (although it's impossible to tell with Gen 6 right now because it's the current generation.)

Because I grind in Le Wow so often, I'm a really big fan of triple battles. I, personally, would like to see a 1 v 5 battle become a thing. Kind of like horde battles, but more of them throughout the game. They could even be a special type in Maison where you have to use more AOE moves.

I love all except Inverse. Blame Inver and his competitive-level Pokemon for the reason why I don't enjoy them, along with his ridiculous requirements to get certain items.

Inverse Battles are amazing! They make you think a lot more than you would normally and it's just a really fun twist to the normal way of battling. It opens up a whole new way of thinking and blows the traditional strategies out of the water! It's just so much fun :P

I'm pretty used to Single Battles, so that's that. I'm pretty indifferent towards Inverse Battles, because it's pretty normal to me. Once I get the concept, it just finds its way into my mind.

I think this is one of the "gimmick battles" (excluding Double Battles because it's so central to Pokemon now that I can't really call it a gimmick anymore) that I really liked. I think they should keep it in some form in later games. Maybe have an area where it's all inverse battles? They'd have to warn you beforehand and they should probably make it and extra, optional area, but it still might be cool.

Rotation Battles from 5th Gen are my favorite. When played online, it adds a whole new dynamic of prediction; not only will you be trying to anticipate the opponent's next move, you'll also be left thinking about which Pokemon they will rotate to next (or if they're even gonna choose to rotate). It was at a different tactical level compared to the rest of the special battles.

As for dislikes, I think the Sky Battles introduced in X and Y were purely for gimmicks. They changed nothing other that eliminating all Ground-type moves and Pokemon that can't fly.

They'd definitely have to warn you beforehand xD Imagine running into a building and grass types keep one hitting your fire types, it would drive you crazy :o I must say though, I'd love to see that! It'd be really cool to see inverse battles becoming a common form of battling, at least as common as Rotation Battles were in Unova :P
