I don't know why the UK wants Assange in Sweden...

If he steps outside the embassy, he'll get arrested for breaching bail conditions which prevented him from leaving a friend's house during the night.

And then that's where the British authorities will attempt to extradite him to Sweden but then he's scared of them sending him to the US who want to charge him with espionage based on his WikiLeaks activities.

It's really awkward and he's planning on giving a statement this weekend but he obviously can't step out of the embassy so he'll probably have to give the statement from a window or something.

Why can't the Equador people just stop being idiots? Seriously, just let him go.

Idiots? Quite the contrary, it's a bold statement of their political inclinations. As ridiculous as it might sound, this is just a declaration of principles against the US- there is the very probable suspicion that Assange will be sent there and put on trial for publishing the leaks. By protecting him, they escalate what could be a discrete extradition request from the US into a massive political fight. As a result, if the US really want to get him, they'll get really bad publicity in large parts of the world, specially in Europe where he's regarded as a victim of political persecution. They just simply joined the group using the political tools of an entire sovereign country, which are enough to keep him safe.

The US have a large record of hiding people persecuted in other countries, such as China or the old USSR. I know this isn't the same case but, if you ask the Anti-US South-American group ALBA (of which Ecuador is a member), they'll easily compare the US to the USSR, so it makes sense to them.
