-Started off with Nidoran Male after a good hour of searching for it (5% encounter rate outside Pokemon League).
BROCK (Badge #1)
As Nidoran struggles and needs training, I switching Nido with Squirtle to take down the Rock types, then used Nidoran for the rest of the game.
-At Mt. Moon I found the core of my team: Paras, Zubat, Clefairy.
I used Moon Stones to evolve to Nidoking and Clefable, which helped me big time in the early part of the game.
-Crushed my Rival with Nidoking and Clefable.
-Hacked in Oddish (silly me forgetting that Oddish isn't in Blue!)
-Defeated every Trainer at and around Nugget Bridge.
To ease the situation and use the most of my team as possible, I did the Mew Glitch to grab my only HM Slave. This worked out because Vulpix didn't come until the fourth Gym.
MISTY (Badge #2)
I used Oddish, Paras and Nidoking to take her down. Status-inflicting moves are very underrated in my opinion.
-Moving on..
-Crush Rival @ SS Anne
SURGE (Badge #3)
Paras knew Dig, so I used Paras for Surge's Voltorb before it fanted.
Nidoking Thrashed the Pikachu and Raichu for a victory.
Landed in Lavender, then grabbed my Vulpix, who I later evolved along with Gloom to complete my team.
ERIKA (Badge #4)
I used Golbat, Nidoking, and my Parasect to defeat Erika, and they were untouchable. The fact that I could get Ice Beam from Celadon Department Store really helped. Also, I bought TM07 Horn Drill!
KOGA (Badge #5)
After grabbing the Earthquake TM from Silph Co., I was able to defeat Koga with Nidoking alone.
Now that I could Surf, I went down to Cinnabar to challenge Blaine.
BLAINE (Badge #6)
For reference this is not in order; I find it easier to fight Blaine rather than Sabrina because Surf and Earthquake are available at this point in the game.
It was like a rerun of the last Gym, where Nidoking Earthquaked to victory.
*Back to Saffron to finish Sliph Co. and Sabrina*
SABRINA (Badge #7)
I gave the job to Parasect, whose Spore and Mega Drain tactics kept her Abra line from dismantling my team up with Psybeam. Despite being the slowest Pokemon in the game (up to Gen 6), Parasect held its own with the fast Kadabra and Alakazam.
GIOVANNI (Badge #8)
This was an effort by Nidokng only, whose Ice Beam, Earthquake and Horn Drill worked to perfection.
-Beat my Rival just before Victory Road.
LORELEI
Thunderbolt is a good move and all, but it doesn't quite kill Lorelei's bulky Ice/Water Pokemon. Therefore, I gave Nidoking an X Accuracy and Horn Drilled her team away.
BRUNO
Clefable and Golbat won this battle for me. Clefable knew Bubblebeam to defeat the Onixs and Golbat Toxic'd and Wing Attacked. It was a great relief that the Machamp does not have the Guts Ability (because this is Gen 1!).
AGATHA
I still believe Agatha is the second hardest Elite Four member because a whole lot can go wrong against her. I gave Nidoking an X Speed to attack the Gengars first without Confuse Ray or Hypnosis ruining my plans. Because Nido outsped her team now, I could Earthquake the Ghosts and Arbok, then Ice Beam Golbat.
LANCE
The versatility of Nidoking was important in this battle as well. It requires 2 X Speeds to get past Lance's Aerodactyl, and I was not willing to roll the dice to see if his Gyarados' Hydro Pump would hit and kill Nidoking. So one TBolt for the Gyarados, Horn Drill to the Dragonairs and... Nidoking fainted!
Well, it's a good thing I'm running a full team. I swapped in Clefable for a classic ToxicStall and Ice Beam to soften the Fossil Dragon up. Next came Dragonite, who took as many as three Ice Beams from Clefable after Lance healed his signature Pokemon. It used Agility and Barrier instead of blowing my Clefable away with Hyper Beam, which seemed silly. Game, set, and match.
CHAMPION BLUE
Here we go. I might add that my team besides Nidoking is at an underleved 50, while Nidoking is a good 56. X Speed and Accuracy for Nidoking because I knew his Pidgeot was only going to spam Agility for the fist two turns.
I made a mistake to not use an Ether to replenish Horn Drill, so the rest of my team would have to help in the event where Nido died again.
Horn Drill to Pidgeot.
TBolt to his Gyarados (TY Critical Hits!).
Earthquake for Alakazam... and it did not kill for reasons unknown.
Ok then, Alakazam, chew on Clefable! ToxicStall and a Tri Attack brought the Magician down. I rembered to bring Revives thankfully, so I brought Nidoking back to finish Blue. One X Accuracy was used, then EQ to Arcanine, and Horn Drill to Rhydon and Venusaur for the win!
WE DID IT!
