[PokeCommunity.com] The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

    The Binding Of Isaac
    Wrath of the Lamb
    Rebirth

The Binding Of Isaac is a room to room action roguelike where you play Isaac, a small child who lives in a religious home with his mom. Mom likes to watch a little bit too much Christian broadcast, and finds herself hearing "the voice of God." God tells her to sacrifice Isaac, just like in the bible story of the same name. And so, to escape Mom, Isaac must venture into their basement and face the untold horrors that live below.

The basic gameplay involves moving from room to room, clearing enemies by shooting them with your tears, and collecting items to power up. There are 6/8/9 floors which must be traversed before completing a single game, with each floor containing a different boss fight, randomly chosen from a set based on the floor.

Wrath of the Lamb was an expansion that added 6 new types of floor, over 20 new enemies, more than 15 new bosses, and 100+ new items. It also added new endings and a set of 10 challenges that force the player to play differently. There was also a new character: Samson.

Rebirth is the main reason that I made this thread. Rebirth is a remake of The Binding Of Isaac, with Wrath of the Lamb, which will be released on November 4 of this year! The game includes a brand spankin' new pixel art style, for which every enemy in the game was redrawn. People like me who own the original already get 33% off right now, btw. Should totally jump on that. Rebirth is said to include 20 Challenges, 160 new items, controller support, 100 specialized seeds (seeds are what are used to generate random content in games, like the dungeon layout in this case), 2-player local co-op, including 100 co-op characters, which I have seen the footage of and it looks sweet, a fresh game engine that does not rely on Flash, Multiple save slots, 3 new playable characters, and rooms full of poop.

So! Think of this as a place to talk about the upcoming release, and share stories and accomplishments in the original.

Kinda disturbing so watch at your own risk.

As a person who absolutely loved the Binding of Issac when it was initially released, I honestly can't wait for this. Considering I've never played the Wrath of the Lamb expansion pack, I can't really say what in particular is different about the game when compared to Rebirth, but comparing Rebirth to the original I see a lot of things to look forward to.

The game in itself looks beautiful. More enemies, better layout of the map system, hud bar, etc. Even though the trailer in itself was downright bloody scary, I really shouldn't have expected much less from them. I've always felt you needed to be really lucky to beat the original - considering you can get royally screwed early on - but I think that adds a nice dynamic to the game that a lot of games nowadays usually brushes aside.

Too bad there isn't an Xbox equivalent to this, but maybe someday it will transfer open to Microsoft's systems. Nontheless, can't wait for it to come out on Steam as I'll be picking it up upon it's release.

Honestly what I am most disappointed about is the fact that there won't be a 3DS version, due to "questionable religious content." I can understand Nintendo wanting to not associate with a game like this, but at the same time it seems like they're trying to do the ESRB's job for them. It's not like this game is advertised to kids after all.

That's pretty surprising. I haven't played Bayonetta all that much but isn't that pretty religious? Or rather there are a lot of suggestive content in that game. Nonetheless, that does seem pretty questionable considering this game would fit very well with the 3DS's controls and dual screens.

Plus Isaac would control really well with the stick, though thankfully playing with my 360 controller on the PC version will probably be pretty sweet.

Anyone have any thoughts on the co-op? There's a video on YouTube of the Pax footage, which features the co-op, and it looks amazing to me. I just need to find people willing to play with me, lol!

Wait, there's co-op?! How is that supposed to work?

The second player steals half a heart of health from the main player, and becomes a familiar. Like the floating baby things you can get, like Sister Maggie. Only player one can pick up items and move the rooms. Player two can drop out and restore the heart to Isaac if they wish, or hold onto it and let them die. I think it's pretty cool.

Huh. Interesting. I just watched some co-op footage of it and I'm iffy on it. The "drop-in, drop-out" feature is cool and can be useful and all (I'm assuming that once P1 dies P2 will automatically die as well) but I don't like the simultaneous active item usage. I don't understand why if P1 uses say, a bomb, then P2 automatically uses one as well. That could really hurt P2 in the wrong situation or if the player isn't looking.

I didn't notice that when I watched it. I almost never used bombs in combat situations anyway, so I think it wouldn't be that hard to avoid the extra bomb when just exploring. That is a rather wonky mechanic though. I wonder if it was intentional.

Well I don't know if it was the bomb function itself, but rather the active button (like "A Pony" when activated will allow the user to sprint in a direction invincible; when P1 activates it, P2 will have it too.) In the video I watched their active action was an "infinite bombs" command which had bombs appear out of nowhere without actually affecting the bomb counter - as they were separate entities - so actions like that which could turn on the player when not in the right scenario could become detrimental.

Oh, that makes sense more then. I think I could live with that. It sounds to me like you're describing the Explosive Diarrhea pill that causes you to place several bombs on the ground, which is technically meant as a penalty so I could understand it affecting both of them.

Nah, I don't think that was it haha; I know what you're forever ring to and this was different than that. When I get a moment where I'm in wifi I'll link you to the video I'm referring to hopefully giving some clarification.
