How soon is soon? Because I'm only on episode 23, if it's being 40 tell me now.

It never actually tells you why, but one can easily assume it's because he became a death god and a hollow at the same time when he was training with Urahara Kisuke.

So..."soon" would, more or less, be never (so far anyway. They might decide to give an explanation later.).

Yeah..it is probably because he was transforming into a hollow..in that pit..and he managed to get out and transform back into a Shinigami when the transformation to being a hollow was only half complete..
