I beg to differ. For the most part, English dubs are actually much better than what they were a decade ago. Lucky Star in English is just the latest in a long, long line.
How can you say that a modern day dub like Lucky Star is decent, if not more, in comparison to the likes of say, Dragonball Z? The VAs in DBZ actually strained their voices for their respective parts and gave the characters a whole new kind of personality, in respects to the Japanese version. You could argue that the fact that they differed the versions so much is enough of a reason to beat on the old school dubs, but I believe that despite this, the DBZ VAs were a lot better than these newer adaptions. I mean, Goku's Japanese voice is too high-pitched for my liking, and I grew up with Sean Schemmel, so I guess I'm only basing this on personal bias, but what else do I have?
Wait, what? You actually liked the old English dub of Card Captor Sakura? That's really something. Yes, it was perfectly sound from a technical standpoint. The real issue with it was the editing, but that's neither here nor there.
Hollow money, my ass. Geneon went under, and ADV is cutting back significantly in order to stay afloat. Their respective voice actor pools have just as much drive and passion, if not more, than their Japanese comrades, but apparently it's just not enough for them; try as they might, their efforts are unappreciated at best and outright maligned at worst.
Ah, yes, the controversial CCS dub, my grande le forte. *shot'd for random gibberish
Anyhow, yes, I agree with you, the CCS dub failed in comparison to its original, and just so you know, I'm a sub supporter, not a dub one. And yes, it was ruined with all the ridiculous editing, the killing of all the pivotal relationships, and the fact that whole episodes were actually cut out, BUT, if it had anything worth praising, it did have a pretty damn nice soundtrack.
And I'm not too familiar with the technicalities of how much current VAs are being paid, tbh, I was just trying to sound dramatic. ^^; But what you're saying is; all the current VAs are just as driven and passionate about their jobs, but are being down trodden to the point where they cbf and half-ass it? If so, that's messed up.
EDIT: @Zanacross: Hahaha. I actually started doing it myself, cause I thought; "what the heck, it might be fun", but after I finished page one, I was like DX.
