What I don't gather either, is why people have to update their FB status, or Twitter something utterly pointless...

"gonna buy a comb" etc...

Not to mention that in the event of something horrible occurring, what does it seem to be that people do first? Make a fb status update of course...

Omg. I know what you're talking about. T___T" And the worse one is the dramatic updates. :(

*tries to find one from yesterday*

Wow I actually think she deleted it. o___o" Oh well. Its annoying, anyway.

Another thing that bamboozles me is when people have it written in their sig where they say that if fb/myspace etc went down, that 90% of the teen population would go nuts/commit suicide or some other thing... Anyway... I've seen a great amount of people having that in their sig... so it is highly unlikely that 90% is an accurate number (besides it actually being made up, to begin with). XD

I love made-up statistic blurbs in sigs. The best one ever was when I dropped "90% of teenagers are addicted to MySpace. If you think Lightning is awesome, copy and paste this into your sig!" in my signature and it actually spread. Though I may have had to bully a few people to putting it in their sig too.

I don't really understand the people who take them seriously though. Every so often you'll come across someone who has about 5 different made-up stats in their sig, fully believing each of them. o_O

Ugh... This is when this kind of photo is warranted:

I'd actually love to find out what would happen if all the social networking sites went down simultaneously. I'd be evilly laughing right now though.

I think people are waaay too over dramatic today. Seriously just get over it. XD

Like my friend right now. She's going through some stuff, but its not all that bad. Her dad had a stroke, okay so that's pretty bad. But a boy she really like(d)(s) is ignoring her and I told her to get over him and find another dude to which she replied "I can't" to which I replied with silence. -___-" Other than that, she's really not got it that bad. She's upset because we can't talk as much as we used to because I'm so busy and I told her I was sorry. But she tells me all the time that she wants to kill herself and she now sees a psychiatrist weekly. Her mom even text'd me today and asked me to talk to her because she's so depressed.

Seriously, wtf? So you've got problems. Oops, sorry, forgot you're the only one in the world. =P Life goes on, we're teenagers. Things will be completely different in even ten years. TEN YEARS! That's not that far. But kids have been brought up in the last generation to know everything can be here and now when they want it. Teenagers especially have no ability to think about the future.

Just make sure to tell her that it is all fickle, cause some people (yes even adults) will never understand that...

A psychiatrist will only prescribe drugs, which won't help at all... This is just a case of bad parenting...

Here, here![/concur]

It just gets old when everyone has the same problems and somehow they still feel like they're the only ones who feel like they do. T__T"

Me? I've got some serious family issues right now. XD Just ask Fallen Nocturne. Things are pretty effed up around here. But that doesn't stop me from wanting to pursue my life goal! In fact, it makes me want to reach even more for it! Just because things suck right now doesn't mean they always will.

Life is a choice itself. Everyday we are challenged with new decisions we have to make. Whether it's "should I really kill myself" or "maybe I should let this coffee from McDonalds cool a bit first", the choice is always yours.

The problem with FB, etc. is that it lets you broadcast whatever you want about yourself to the world and further perpetuates the "it's all about me" thing. :( It turns so many people into utter drama queens. Or so I figure, anyway.

I'd actually love to find out what would happen if all the social networking sites went down simultaneously. I'd be evilly laughing right now though.
Facebook, MySpace (I think?) and Livejournal all went down one day from the same DDOS attack. And twitter was intermittently up and down all day. XD Seeing a few of my twitter friends flip out over it was pretty funny.

It is an interesting thing, the choice is indeed our own, but it also has a lot of dependency of various elements. Mainly that of relationships (all kinds, I don't just mean with a boyfriend/girlfriend, even ones to inanimate objects). But there is also willpower, and the environment (such as media).

You'd be surprised on how easy it is to convince someone what they are, and what they are not. Take the
Stanford prison experiment

as an example...

I just have to say WTF on the Facebook link. *doubles facepalm*

I admit I was addicted to both Myspace and Facebook when I first used it, but then I'm not that much into those social networks anymore. I still use Facebook, but it does get annoying that my friends keep requesting to take this quiz and to try out this application. >.>

Yeah, I've ignored requests left, right and centre...

Lol, I wish I could have found out people's reactions too...

In such a relatively short time, too. Pretty interesting stuff if you're into sociology.
Yeah. @_@ I guess it's just become a new way to communicate that appeals to our inner egotist (like Lightning was saying). Of course, it certainly has practical applications, like communicating regardless of physical barriers/separation, but for it to be seen as the first line of calling for help is fascinating. :s

That's actually a pretty interesting theory, Feign @ your link about Stanford.

I tend to never post my thoughts on social networking sites and just use them to talk to people. :/ I never post "What I am doing..." or Myspace bulletins.

What would be even more interesting is if the study had continued...

However... make a correlation study out of it, and you can pull up examples such as the prison camps in Germany, during wwII (soldiers following orders to carry out genocide, among other things). Or a more recent example, such as the controversy with the US soldiers and how they made the prisoners do disturbing things.

edit: A much better example also, is when there was a game show, in which the winner would be able to go to outer space. Thing was, it was all a lie, to see if the contestant could find it believable. The contestant, was infact duped that it was. And guess what, even the actors though it was real... If the actors think a simulation is real (acting the part), then we know something is up...

It really is disturbing how people can become agents for such horrific causes just by a change in role and environment. D:
