My Spanish teacher just translates 'dedos' as 'digits'. We don't talk about fingers and toes much in class, though.

Yeah, I get that. What I mean is that he doesn't distinguish between fingers and toes (dedos de la mano y dedos del pie) but lumps them all together as digits (dedos).Dedos does mean "digits" literally, but not "digits" as in 1024001, but "digits" as in "fingers." Fingers are also called "digits."

It's probably more like 'my Spanish teacher is lazy and can't be bothered adding 'del pie' onto the end'.
