Ottawa's a great city; it's really bilingual. I love it.

I'd like to see the rest of Canada like that :\ or at least, try to follow their example.

All we ask is that you try lol You can have the biggest accent in the world, but having tried seriously makes our hearts flutter.

The Quebecois aren't being arrogant.

We're willing to speak in English in general; we actually LEARN the English language.

The English DO NOT try to speak French (in general); they do not take French in school as much as the Quebecois learn English.

How is it the same? Refusing to speak English in a French province is not arrogance; it's to be expected, yet, the majority of Quebecois speak English anyway. If we choose not to speak to you, then perhaps that'll force you guys to at least try to speak French and "come out of your hole", as the expression goes.

The fact that they've learned any french at all is 'coming out of the hole' so to speak. I agree, it's not discrimination to refuse service in english. Something is wrong with the court system if such lawsuits are allowed. My point is that it's wrong to mandate something because YOUR people are forced to learn english. English is pretty much an international language anyways, people need to learn to deal with that properly. I know it isn't 'fair' but no one is forcing you to stop learning your native language, we just want people to be able to have the gumption to be able to spot a native english speaker and speak english to them without having us have to embarrass ourselves by butchering YOUR language with our poor skills. English has been an international language for about a century if not longer.

Oh, you're coming here to Ottawa? Carleton or Ottawa U? XD

And I can vouche for the fact that Ottawa is very bilingual. Our recently elected firechief was in some trouble because he couldn't speak French. I hear he's taking courses now, though. ^^

XD I'd laugh if someone couldn't figure that out. Same with 13:00.

Ah, I'm studying Physical Geography at Carleton. XD Well, provided I can find somewhere to stay that is. >.x If all else fails, I'll live in a cardboard box.

Asking the whole country to become bilingual though, that's too much, especially with all of the different cultures we have here these days.

Well, pretty much everyone in this thread here (despite being from Ontario which I've noticed, as a whole, doesn't really like Quebec :s) definitely tries because we're the nerds who kept taking French through high school but... I dunno if you'd ever get any city other than Ottawa to be bilingual. I'm pretty sure it's only bilingual because it's the capital and there'd be sooo many complaints if it weren't. (And iirc, it was chosen as the capital for being right between the city centres of Montreal and Toronto so there'd be a median capital, lmao.) If Toronto had ended up the capital (god forbid--Canada would be so egotistical as a nation in that case xD), I doubt there'd be so much French spoken in the capital. Actually, French probably wouldn't be nearly as respected as it is now and that's saying something. @_@;

As said, we just want anglophones to try. When you guys don't even try to learn / speak it and dirt-talk the language without really even knowing how great it is, that's what pisses us off ):

We're not asking for bilingual cities to start sprouting up across Canada; we're just asking for a more just French education system in Canada and more enthusiasm from anglophones to try and speak French, rather than just demanding English all of the time.

French is the 10th most spoken language in the world. English is the second.

I don't see why it shouldn't be mandatory, since 190,000,000 people speak French, or more.

Actually, French is 13th with 72,000,000 speakers.

English is 3rd with 322,000,000 speakers.

Spanish is 2nd with 332,000,000 speakers.

Mandarin Chinese is 1st with 885,000,000 speakers.

Rounding of course.

Problem is, we're not putting down the French language. We just don't all need to be forced to learn it to please you people. I agree, people who go to Quebec should learn French if they want people to like them but, what about all the people you want to force who won't be going to Quebec because of the poor attiudes the people in Quebec have towards anglophones?

Ah, cool. I've been at Carleton for a few years now, wanting to get a Math degree. ^_^

And all first year students get guaranteed residence, no? Unless that's changed since I started there. o.o

And I think the one with English as number 2 is right. Though seeing as China is has the largest population of people who can speak English, I dunno....

Do you realize how much more egotistical you're sounding with every post? Really? You're making it sound like French is some sort of superior language, when it really isn't. Here at least, you're required to take it through public school so that you have a basic understanding. You can't really force people to do more than that when there's no need. If you want the rest of Canada to speak more French, you should move more French-speaking people into other provinces. D=

I agree with parallelzero. Nothing more than a basic understanding of french is needed among people in Canada who don't live in or near Quebec.

You're not lol but 70% of the anglophones I meet are always dirt-talking the Quebecois, saying we're arrogant, prudes, idiots, panzies, and far worse things o0 You just haven't seen it lol but we see it all of the time over here, and when we riot for our rights, people are always saying that we're whining and we should just stfu because we don't matter as much as the anglophones matter.

There's a lot of discrimination going on towards Quebec and there always has been. Quebec doesn't descriminate towards anglophones, though, contrary to popular believe. The worst we call you guys are blockheads because you don't even try to speak French when you come to Quebec, or when we ask for service in other provinces.

French looks good on a resume; as said, 190,000,000 speakers isn't nothing. It's a lot of people. It'll help you in your future and for popular travel destinations, such as Switzerland and France. If you're going to Morocco, too, no one speaks English, and French is a hell of a lot easier to learn than Arabic I'll tell ya now lol!

It's about respect for Quebec; we just want to see some efforts! Canada either doesn't learn French to a level capable of ordering a pizza and understanding the other guy, or they have, and don't bother trying because:

"Who cares? They'll just speak English anyway."

It's not so much about French. It's about respect for 10-12 million people in Canada.

[Edit]

Rofl parallelzero is a good example of a typical anglophone. Just because French isn't as used as English, it doesn't deserve its spot o0 It's people like you who make Quebec revolt so much. French isn't a superior language, but it is an official language of Canada, and it should be learnt to the extent of ordering a pizza and being comprehended! Most of you guys can't even get through that! and then you go about whining and us being arrogant, when we just want our fair slice of respect towards our culture rofl

As said, I'm an anglophone; my father's Scottish, my mother's French. I was raised in a crappy anglophone community who was racist as Hell towards the French. You speak French, they'll say: "SPEAK ENGLISH; THIS IS CANADA!", yet Canada is French and English, or has the English become so self-absorbed that they've obtained selective memory?

There is one problem with your source. Your experience alone doesn't dictate how all anglophones feel about Quebec, and likely you must live among some real jerks if things are like that for you, but the fact of the matter is, that you should expect some people to express their dislike for the unreasonable demands that the people of Quebec are making.

Actually, to be honest, she's pretty bang on with how most of Canada sees Quebec. Or how Ontario does, at any rate. :(

I would love to see a non-partisan source on that. Not because I don't belive you or disagree, but simply because I'm a debater. :3

Unreasonable? But it isn't. In Quebec, we learn English just fine; learning French as we learn English is only common courteousy.

I lived in Ontario most of my life and there are so many racists who state freely that "We're in Canada; speak English" or "Get the Hell out of Canada if you don't speak English". I've seen it online, in the news, in the papers.

People hate Quebec because we don't want to become another English province. We want to retain French, yet the English with their "rights" in the French province is actually causing the French maternal language percentage to go down.

And, as said, most people can't order pizza in French properly. Why shouldn't you learn a basic understanding and vocabulary? That's all we ask for, and you guys ask for an arm - complete bilingualism.

Pachy, skip back a few pages. We wanted proper representation for the OLYMPICS and we didn't get it - when we complained, we were called whiners and to stfu. That's proof there, and I gave it long before this discussion.

While I agree that other Canadians shouldn't feel that English is the only language, I also feel that complete bilingualism is also a lot less efficient than usual. I think anyone who says "Get the heck out of ___ if you don't learn the ____ language" in general are complete losers who need to embrace all cultures equally, but yeah, that's how I see it.

Well, I've lived in a lot of provinces in Canada and have visited every other one. :( While I can't vouch for everyone, I've definitely lived in Ontario long enough--and as a bit of an "outsider" having come from other province(s)--to see what the general attitude is. It's just something that's honestly been around for so long. It's not as bad as when there was the huuuge rivalry between upper and lower Canada but... well, there's still some mutual hate between ON and QC as far as I can tell, lmao.

Anyway, how was Quebec not properly represented at the Olympics...? :/ French is an official Olympic language and came FIRST in every ceremony. I can't really think of anything else to complain about. :s
