    Even on the Internet it's often not too hard to pick up on whether someone's being sarcastic or not. Still, sometimes emphasis is needed as well.

    Mm, I'd say it depends. In a thread like this, where things like silliness and sarcasm are to be expected, it's a lot easier to pick up on sarcasm. In a more serious place or in response to a more serious subject, though, then emphasis or some type of hint is typically needed.
