The iPhone 4 Thread: HTCers gonna hate edition(Zet title invasion)

Got mine in this morning and I have to say I'm really happy with it. The improved quality of the screen is what stands out to me the most, it's so vibrant. I really wish I could find a decent case, but since the phone isn't officially on sale yet the ATT around here doesn't have any.

So looks like Apple hates left handed people with the iphone 4's reception dropping just by holding it in your left hand. Apple also claims it's your fault and not the phone/Apple's fault.

They also say it happens as well with right handed people, just not as severely, and that buying a case will alleviate the problem. Lucky for Apple, they're making such cases. Anyone sense a pattern here?

I saw the iPhone 4 on display at AT&T. The camera resolution is rather disappointing (back 5 MP and front VGA vs Evo's 1.3 MP front and 8 MP back) and no flash support. And the pre-release "iPhone 4G" hype ended up being disappointed as well.

What I do like about it? It's more compact I guess. It also tops the Evo as far as battery life is concerned. The biggest disappointment is not the phone itself, rather AT&T. They stopped offering unlimited data with their smartphone plans (highest is 2 GB). I used to own an iPhone 3G awhile back and I actually did consider getting this new iPhone but AT&T's switcheroo ruined that. The hanset itself looks sleek even I, an HTC fangirl, was impressed but until AT&T changes their plans or another carrier with unlimited data gets the iPhone it's a no.

I'm actually considering doing a YouTube comparison if my uncle gets the iPhone 4 and compare it with my Evo. While the large screen makes for nice videos I'll admit it's a bit of pain carrying that huge thing around. The 3G on AT&T is faster than on Sprint so that's a plus. Of course the 4G/WiMax is faster than both but that's only avaliable at home and not when I'm away at school which is where I will be 8 months out of the year.

Who owns an iPhone 4 yet? My main question is how fast is the web? I couldn't test it alot with the store model since there was a line to play with it. I really want to compare the web speeds between iPhone 4 and HTC Evo when on 4G/WiMax.

I really think Jobs and Apple should have fixed this before releasing it into the world.

I tried to recreate the problem with mine, and it kept its signal. Apparently putting a case/bumper on it nullifies the signal loss, so it's not all that big of a deal seeing as how 99% of iPhone users use a case for theirs. Besides, the bars go back up pretty quickly when you move your hand anyway.

iPhone 4 looks whack; I don't like the look of them. I mean, the front-view camera is good, apparently the graphics are absolutely fabulous and the glass is better too.

The new iPhone looks.. I dunno.. more rectangular?

It's true that buying rubber bands($30) will prevent reception lost but not everyone will want to do that. Also it turns out the super gorilla glass isn't that strong and you the back of the phone is also very easy to scratch.

Yeah, but why would you have an iPhone and not have a case for it? It doesn't have to be a band, a case does the same thing. I've never seen someone IRL own an iPhone and not have a case on it.

A friend of mine is completely against cases for his iPhone, while I'm totally for them, I'm not ready to risk dropping it the wrong way or something.

I really like the new iPhone. It is pretty nice. I love the design. I just wish that T-mobile were carrying them. :( I would have loved to upgrade for one. I like Face Time and get to make videos in 720p. And of course the iOS4 firmware is amazing.

Yeah I heard they had some problems with the reception? And one way to cure it is by buying their bumpers for $30. Real smart Apple. They should have given these out for free for people who had trouble getting reception. Oh well.

Here's a comparison of some key features of the iPhone 4 and the HTC Evo 4G.

iPhone 4 is running on the AT&T 3G network.
The Evo is running on the Sprint 4G network.

iPhone 4 has a data limit of 2 GB a month before running into overages with AT&T.
The Evo allows for Unlimited data use.

iPhone 4 has a 5 megapixel camera with a VGA (0.3 megapixel) front-facing camera.
The Evo has an 8 megapixel camera and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera.

iPhone 4's FaceTime video chat can only be used over Wi-Fi.
The Evo can video chat over Wi-Fi, 3G, or 4G.

iPhone 4 has an App store that carries around 200,000 Apps.
Evo has an App store that carries around 33,000 Apps.

iPhone 4 costs $114.99/mo for unlimited talk, messaging, and 2 GB of web access.
The Evo costs $79.99/mo a month for unlimited calls to any mobile phone in America, unlimited messaging, unlimited data, and unlimted Sprint TV and Navigator.

I'm just gonna point out two things.

First off, your so called unlimited data plan in reality is capped around 5GB, as are most 'unlimited' plans, just because that's how the networks work at the time. And 2GB is more than you'll ever use on a phone alone, if you were tethering, the perhaps that argument would be relative.

Secondly, mega-pixels don't mean much anymore. My DSLR has less mega-pixels than the EVO, though I can guarantee it takes photo's that are 10x better than anything you could do on the EVO.

Even if Sprint's plan is capped at 5 GB, that still beats AT&T's 2 GB.

And yes both phones tether. The Evo (when a Sprint Mobile Hotspot plan is purchased) can tether up to 8 Wi-Fi enabled devices at once. And Sprint allows for more data under it's "Unlimited" plan if you do this because you are paying more for it.

Actually I would probably come close to using up 2 GB if not go over. I'm trying to bash the iPhone per say, but rather bash AT&T for suckishly not offering unlimited data anymore. The iPhone is a device that is meant to use a lot of data and with capped data, what's the point?

I LOVE the iPhone. But I hate AT&T. And that's the reason why I switched to the HTC Incredible, because it was on a more stable network.

I actually created a checklist comparing the two phones, and debated long and hard about switching. Ultimately, it came down to "making phone calls." I can't believe how much I love the iPhone as a gadget that I was willing to overlook all the problems I had with dropped calls, and worst of all, voicemails that take 24 hours to get to me!

Anyways, if rumors are true, I won't have to wait too long before the iPhone makes its way to Verizon. And yes, once it does, I'm switching back:)

If iPhone comes to any other U.S. carrier, it would probably be T-Mobile. The iPhone and AT&T are GSM while Verizon is CDMA. T-Mobile, being GSM, would be easier to accomidate.

You can already get factory unlocked iPhones to use on T-Mobile, you just can't access 3G with them. You're stuck using Edge until AT&T's exclusivity ends. And I don't see why Apple wouldn't manufacture iPhones that use CDMA if they were to drop their exclusive deal with AT&T. That's sales that they would be losing, and few companies are willing to lose any sale.
